That's true - the difficult spikes about halfway through the game. Comparing the difficulty of the first half to the second is like comparing black to white. It's quite horrendous, but certainly not impossible.
Has time produced exaggeration once again? Look, this is to the Super Nintendo what Golden Axe is to the Mega Drive - it's really not as good as you remember. It's certainly not a bad game, but not one that's worth a higher mark than Sonic The Hedgehog, or Dynamite Headdy, or even any of the Bonk games.
For a game that's so punishingly, seriously difficult, and one that also sets you up to fail, 7/10 is a very generous score.
This, to me, is the most upsetting videogame of all time. It takes ages to master the level layouts, yet life's too short, y'know? This really does make me consider how utterly futile my hobby is. If I were to give it a score, I'd award Mega Man a crying emoticon.
This is my favourite Sonic The Hedgehog game - perhaps even my favourite 2D Platformer. I prefered this new, considerate appraoch to the series, and accordingly, prefer Sonic 3 to either of it's Mega Drive predessors. They're all classics, of course.
First time I've ever seen Sonic 3D compared to Super Mario RPG. Unusual.
Anyways, this doesn't deserve the critisism its recieved over the last decade. A slower-paced Sonic game, yes, but a more thoughtful one too. Plus, its a graphical beast on Mega Drive. All in all, a good effort.
Though DoReMi doesn't do anything that Bubble Bobble and Super Mario hadn't already by 1996, it has been crafted with such professionalism and verve that you can't help but think 'holy smokes, this is a great game'. 9/10 indeed.
It takes a while to get into, but soon sparkles with the characteristic Nintendo promise. Put the effort in, and you'll be in the knowledge that you've wisely used 1,000 points.
Ecco Jr: it's not my least favourite game. I wouldn't say it should be knocked for what it is. This would perhaps make for a reasonable gift for someone's young daughter, for instance. Some people don't see the challenge, and thus see no point, but I reckon it is a pleasant enough experience.
Love it. F-Zero X is a game you simply must have in your collection, yet to my mind Mario Kart 64 has usurped it for the mantle of Best N64 Racer. It's very, very close though.
One of the N64 greats. My first N64 game too. Tough choice between this and ISS 64, but this was my pick. That said, ultimately Mario Kart 64 is a flawed genius. The computer are cheaters, the battle arenas are too big and complex, and they could have made it more Mario-y. But still, you've gotta have it!
It's quite ridiculous if you think about it; surely the number of Americans who wanted the likes of Pitstop II are in the minority? I like the idea of 3-game weeks again though.
Much like Neo Turf Maters, I enjoy seeing the use of the defining SNK beefy graphics outside of the usual 2D fighters. It's quite something to see and hear - especially the cry of "B-B-B-B-B-B-B-Baseball Staaaars Twoooo!!"
The sloppiest, most sluggish pinball game I've ever played i.e. not "perfectly fine". The idea is great though - I'd like to see a proper sequel someday.
The PAL coversion does indeed butcher this game. By taking away its defining characteristic - namely, the speed - what we've been left with is a version of Sonic The Hedgehog that it fairly sedate. The game does shine, but its a struggle.
10! Jings! I'd call Paper Mario one of my favourite N64 games, but in accordance to the new scoring policy on VC Reviews, I wouldn't give it top marks. Of course, it remains worth downloading.
Damn you, nostalgia! 9/10 is excessive - unlike your good selves, I feel that SoR 2 has aged quite badly. Sound and graphics remain as great as they were two decades ago, but the gameplay doesn't hold up in the same way. Nonetheless, better than Golden Axe, Final Fight, Burning Fight and the rest of 'em.
I find the review interesting, yet unconvincing. It's a different (enough) game to warrant a download, and has some really impressive touches - though a subjective matter, I feel the music and sound both enhance the Yoshi's Story experience. In conjunction, the claim that it is unchallenging is hallow; a substantial challange lies underneath the suface.
How excited am I about the impending rerelease of Pulseman? Well, I'll just say that it'll really make my videogaming year. No joke - I'm mad for 2D platformers, and this is one of the few high-profile ones that I've never had the chance to play. This is what the VC is all about!
There are many game series that I adore, such as F-Zero, Metal Slug and Sonic The Hedgehog; There are several game series that I loathe, like Contra, Mortal Kombat and Mega Man.
Castlevania is the only videogame series that has made no impact on me. It's just Castlevania.
From a technical and artistic stance, S&P could be the best N64 game of them all - but as has already been said above, its over all too soon, and it is this shortness that ultimately hurts the game's cause.
Aww. I see my old comment regarding Eternal Champions has been wiped. Essentially, I don't like it one bit - but what is there to like about the world's first 'crap-'em-up'?
Top-shelf fighting game? This is so low, it's pratically underground...
Not exactly at the top of the Virtual Console agenda. I'm sure this was popular enough at the time of release, but we've had two decades of subsequent progression.
More The Blob from Clayfighter than de Blob. That's not a compliment.
I disagree: if you want to throw your money down the drain, throw your money down the drain. On the other hand, if you're after some underground platforming excellence...download Dynamite Headdy.
Sonic Chaos falls somewhere in between. At 500 points and just 19 Blocks of memory, I recommend it.
Holy smokes. As a guide on how to balls up a videogame, this is superb.
Despite what BassX0 might have said above, its well and truly the worst Nintendo game in VC. Give me the likes of Soccer, Ice Hockey and Golf over Cruis'n USA anyday.
A cutesy platform-shooter hybrid that acts as a pleasent introduction to what is a highly subjective game genre - but be aware: it'll kick your arse. Good stuff!
I went back to this last night. It's actually held up quite well - a pleasant surprise to say the least.
Certainly better than Alex Kidd and Adventure Island, yet I find it lacks the really clever bits of games like Super Mario Bros. 3 and even Bonk. Accept it as a straight-forward platformer with none of the pizazz of it's Mega Drive counterpart, and you'll enjoy it.
Here's the deal: I'd rather have Sonic on MS than Mega Man. However, I'd rather not have Splatterhouse 2 at all. One of the worst MD games on Virtual Console for sure.

Re: Review: Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers (SNES)
I'd say this deserves full marks. It's an absolute classic - the deepest, most compelling fighter of all time. Near perfect, in my opinion.
Re: Review: Dynamite Headdy (MD)
You oughta - it's one of the best 2D platformers ever made. At the very least, a good excuse to bypass the typical Sonic and Mario fare.
Re: Review: Art of Fighting (Neo Geo)
Too close to Street Fighter II to be worth a damn. I'd recommend the Capcom classic, but you've already downloaded that, haven't you?
Re: Review: Donkey Kong Country (SNES)
9/10 = unrealistic nostalgia.

Woeful!

Re: Review: Altered Beast (MD)
Timeline (in seconds, natch):
0:00 - Start the game.
0:07 - "WISE FROM YOUR GRAVE!"
0:09 - Never play Altered Beast again.

Re: Review: Pitstop II (C64)
Offers nothing that the last 20 years worth of racing games haven't improved upon. This deserves 0/10!
Re: USA VC Update: Commodore 64 Launches With Three Games
It's quite ridiculous if you think about it; surely the number of Americans who wanted the likes of Pitstop II are in the minority? I like the idea of 3-game weeks again though.
Re: Review: Bonk 2: Bonk's Revenge (TG-16)
It's no Super Mario, but Bonk is likeable enough and this game is certainly a solid purchase. 8/10 is fair game.

Re: Review: Alien Storm (MD)
Miles better than Golden Axe! Much more varied, and deserves to be remembered as a Mega Drive great alongside the likes of Streets of Rage.

Re: Review: Adventure Island (NES)
7/10. Ristar also recieved 7/10. Clearly, this is not as good as Ristar. Half the score - then it would be accurate.
Re: Review: Contra III: The Alien Wars (SNES)
Get neither. Gunstar Heroes and Metal Slug are available too, y'know...
Re: Review: Metal Slug (Neo Geo)
I've always said that Metal Slug puts Contra and it's likeness to shame. The review is spot-on.

I'll wrap this up: your review is misguiding.
Re: EU VC Update: MERCS and Winter Games
I was never too keen on Winter Games - though the 'Games' series was usually decent enough. Not going to bother with either I'm afraid.
Re: Galaga
Best played as a 40 second demo whilst waiting for Tekken to load up. Those were the days!
Re: Contra III: The Alien Wars
Gunstar Heroes puts this to shame. Serious and punishing - a combo that is exactly what I don't want from a videogame.
Re: Pulseman

Re: Strider
Ahh, ScrewAttack's #1 Mega Drive game! But ScrewAttack is just awful - in all likelihood, I'll hate this game!

Re: Super Thunder Blade
Could this be the worst Mega Drive VC game? No - that mantle is awarded to Eternal Champions. Nonethelss, this is the shameful silver medalist.

PISH!
Though I do like the use of that super fit, muscle-ridden machine that is Hulk Hogan. tears off t-shirt by the neck in appreciation
Re: Rumour: EarthBound Not Coming to Virtual Console
Couldn't give a toss about this game.
That's all from me.

The lack of reviews accurately emphasises my disinterest in this game.
Think about games also available like Gunstar Heroes; Super Mario World; F-Zero X. Aaaaaaaaaaaaand g'night.
