The first week I had my 3DS I had some little issues, like occasional light headaches, but to me it's just like when the Wii first launched and my arms got sore from playing Twilight Princess and Wii Boxing. It's new technology, and our bodies are going to need a bit of time to catch up.
Ha! I just remembered that I reviewed this game a long time ago when I wrote for another site. I can't tell you how grateful I am that Nintendo Life keeps my cynicism and sarcasm in tact, because that review is absolutely insufferable
Ooooh, can you imagine NiGHTS on 3DS? Be still my beating heart. I actually thought the Wii game was great, though obviously the platforming sections with the two kids were pretty mediocre for the most part.
First of all, this article is just fantastically well done. Even handed, yet still pressing and compellingly written. Great read.
Ultimately I'd absolutely love to play all three of these games (Pandora's Tower in particular--that game is right up my ally) but it's hard to look at this whole thing and say its economically sound for Nintendo to localize them. As mentioned in the article, even if these games sell well, it's a bit of a special circumstance. No other unlocalized games have ever seen this much vehement support, so whose to say that the next 3rd party original IP will sell?
Kirby is just pure joy for me; perhaps the purest franchise in gaming. It has no other goal other than to put a huge smile on your face and this game isn't any different
Very bad form on Nintendo of America's part. I don't see why they couldn't just add English subtitles to these games, ship them limited quantities and just call it a day.
Man, the color choices in this game are just awful, and the art style seems like a compromise of several much more interesting ideas. Great review as always, Phil
I doubt it will be online, since it's a game that requires a lot of communication between players; I'm personally just pulling for download play, because I know only one person within 50 miles of me with a 3DS/DSi.
Good for them. Everybody has one, and it'll keep the cost down (which is going to be tricky for the Wii U anyway). As long as it has Netflix, I'll be set
@Corbs I'm with ya. I think the reason they went with circle pads is because it keeps the design a bit slicker--after all, they're just...well, little circles And they barely rise above the surface of the controller. I can see how they wouldn't offer the fidelity and nuance of movement necessary for say, a shooter, so it'll be interesting to see how Nintendo responds, because it seems like most people aren't too happy with the circle pad decision.
@Corbs Is it the idea of circle pads that you don't like or do they just not play well on the controller? I've been playing my 3DS a lot lately and I'm actually starting to really like the pads.
Nice write-up Corbs. That'll show those people that say we shamelessly suck up to Nintendo
Personally, I'm with you. I think the potential here is incredible, but I need to see some actual games before I'm completely sold on it. As Michael Abbot wrote on his Brainy Gamer blog, Nintendo went from industry leader to tanking sales overnight (almost literally, it seems) and they obviously ended up wheeling this thing out sooner than they expected.
But this is the way the Wii's unveiling went, too. Not a whole lot of actual games on display, just quirky tech demos that vaguely hinted at what the machine could do. I think that sort of thing is important, but it also had a little something to do with the fact that their stock declined after its showing, I think.
Quite honestly I'm wondering how it's going to stack up to Link's Awakening, which I just finished playing for the first time last week. I walked away from it thinking it's the best game in the series. Then again, I've played Ocarina like 50 times so the surprise factor is gone for me.
@warioswoods Thanks for the kind words I never knew about Koizumi's involvement in Galaxy before you tied that all together, but if that's the case then he should really do more stories for Nintendo because he's clearly great at what he does.
@warioswoods I agree. I think the 3DS shop is a good example of this; it's just as functional as the App store, but it has a more quirky, Nintendo feel to it. Online gaming still feels very strange and impersonal to me. Nintendo needs to find a way to make it more fun, personal and...well, Nintendo-y.
Two disclaimers: A) I know nothing about the stock market B) I'm a teenager, so I really don't know anything
That being said, here's what I think. The console simply didn't have a good showing. That was the problem. The 3DS unveiling BLEW PEOPLES MINDS. The Wii U? Not so much. I don't think it's the tech that's the problem; they simply needed 1) More games, and 2) a few live, onstage demos to show how this thing works.
One of the things that made the Vita so successful at its unveiling was the great onstage demonstrations Sony showed--and these demos not only showcased what the system could do, but they showed actual games, not just one-off tech demos..
I think the Wii U is a great idea, the kind only Nintendo can get away with. I also think they need to do a better job of showing us just what exactly this system is. Also, make the controller look sexier. I'm sure it plays great in reality, but it's an ugly thing to look at.
@Skotski Exactly. I love Nicalis and Studio Pixel, so if they put out a quality project, I'm going to support it. I realize Cave Story has been through a port overload recently, but I think this is one of those rare cases where it's a good thing. Cave Story deserved to be massive--it's one of the best games ever, in my opinion, and I think it's great that they're trying to reach as wide an audience as possible.
For anyone that's seen the various screenshots of Cave Story 3D, you need to toss those out of your mind because you can't truly appreciate the game's amazing visual presentation until you've seen it for yourself. Once you witness the game in motion and with the full 3D depth in place, then you'll begin to appreciate just how beautiful the game truly is.
**sigh of relief** thanks for the write-up, Corbie. I was really worried about this one, but you've swayed me
I never really "got" this game when I played it as a kid (which is to say I sucked at it) but for some reason when I downloaded it last night, it just clicked. Now I keep coming back to it because I'm having so much fun with it! If you take the time to figure out the timing of everything, it actually pays off.
At first I was all like "meh," and then I read ...and the adventure-filled story was penned by two of the Academy Award-nominated writers of the original Toy Story movie, Alec Sokolow and Joel Cohen. Now I'm all like
Now that's a shame...I'm a big House fan and would have definitely picked this up if it was at least decent. Also, it just struck me that a medical game such as this structured like L.A. Noire would be unbelievably awesome.
@Rathe And with MGS3, the really annoying this was that any time you crawled into tall grass the camera would automatically shift into first person, with no way of changing it. It's little things like these that, if fixed, will make this a really worthwhile remake. 3 is definitely my least-favorite of the series but with a touch more polish I can see it sneaking past at least the first in terms of quality.
Thank the lord above that they've implemented the crouch walk. After you play MGS4 with it, it's really a bummer to play the old games that don't have it.
@Slapshot Thanks, I think that actually cleared up a lot of my confusion. Although, by your definition, it seems to me that the Wii has probably the most hard-core first party games since the SNES, at least as far as challenge is concerned.
I think I speak for the majority in saying that this is a great article, Thom I also realized that I never really responded to the question at hand. What I think is this: when it comes to the Wii 2, Nintendo needs to do what it's been doing with the Wii and DS--they just need to do it better.
Because really, that's the point of a new console, anyway--ideally, a new console is a system that does everything better than the system before it. For Nintendo, this means continuing to create diverse experiences that cater to a wide variety of audiences, while improving basic functionality. More horsepower, more robust online capabilities, etc. They also need to get better at promoting their online stores and 3rd party software. Nintendo knows this, though, and they've said as much recently, so I have no doubt that the Wii 2 will be an impressive system

Said the president of the company who still uses the Super Nintendo controller...with control sticks. And the Wii Remote...with a ball on top.
