Re: Review: Super Mario 3D Land (3DS)

I'm actually kind of pumped for having a run button in a 3D Mario game. The platforming in the 3D Marios has never been quite as satisfying as the 2D ones for me, and I think it's that run button. There's something really satisfying about having your thumb on the run and jump buttons on the same time.

It seems like some critics are cynical about the game taking so much inspiration from the Mario games of old, and some are embracing it. I'm glad to see your embracing it
Great review, Corbs.

"Think Westworld, but with less Yul Brynner and more of the cockroach from Wall-E."
This review is wonderful, Phil. One of my (endless array of) pet peeves is when critics give a game like this a low score and someone says, "Hey! This is aimed at kids! You can't do that!"
Since when should kids have to put up with lame games? Why, back in my day, kids played Banjo Kazooie and A Link to the Past, consarnit!

THANK you. This is why I find the talk of an Uncharted movie so reprehensible. What can we possibly gain from that experience? Why would it be better? I'm even more baffled when I hear fans crying for a Zelda movie. Insanity.

I was going to resist buying this one, I really was...
but then I read the description of the mystery and DANG IT! I'm sold. Sorry, wallet.

@Phil
Is there any trouble with using the Wifi if you play this on the 3DS? I remember I could never download puzzles on my DSi because it wasn't compatible with DS WiFi.

I'm surprised at how much you enjoy the world maps in Super Mario World and Land 2. I thought they were visually nice, but a huge pain to backtrack through. I thought New Super Mario Bros. Wii had the best compromise--a visually striking map that gave the levels a sense of place, but it was also a cinch to to warp between worlds.

I really urge all those saying the game deserves a 9 to play those Tails, Eggman and car levels again. I agree that the Sonic and Shadow levels are fantastic. But I just played this game a few days ago and folks...every other aspect of this game is pretty poor. I have some great childhood memories of this game, but I have to admit that it is indeed very flawed.

I also really urge you all to read the review and not just the score

Re: Ubisoft: "Nobody Proved Wii Does FPS Controls Better"

Kid_A

I'm not sure if I disagree...honestly, I don't think that the PS3 and 360 have proven that their controls are better than the Wii controls. Certainly those consoles have better shooters over all, but I wouldn't say I prefer duel-analogue to pointer. They both have merits and drawbacks.

@Kid_Crono
A 7 by our standards is not average, nor does a 10 by our standards mean that a game is perfect. Check out our scoring policy, which you can click on underneath all of our review scores. So, honestly, while I understand that you're disappointed, I'm not sure what your point is. 5 is average for us, and the games you listed got a 6--which is above average by our standards. And actually, I can assure you that Twin Snakes didn't get a 6...because I'm reviewing it and I haven't even submitted the write-up yet
I think you'll also find that when it comes to reviews, the content is significantly more important than the score. Arguing about scores is, frankly, a bit silly. Arguing about the opinions expressed in our reviews, though--now there's where a meaningful discussion starts.

Spot on review, I'd say. It's not a bad game, but even when it first came out and I was a Sonic-obsessed kid I could recognize how unwieldly the camera was, not to mention the Tails/Eggman levels were absolutely putrid even by 10-year-old-kid standards. The Sonic levels are still a blast, though, and I'm still a sucker for the collect-a-thon games that Knuckles' levels recall.

Re: Talking Point: Why No Plans for GBA on 3DS Virtual Console?

Kid_A

In my opinion, it has always been their intention to release them to everyone. They just used some dubious wording. As @dimlylitmonkey pointed out, although they've stated that they have no official plans at this time to release them to non-ambassadors, that, to me, just sounds like a clever way for Nintendo to make us ambassadors feel special for a bit while at the same time giving themselves a loop-hole for when they want to release them in the future.
