Re: Wii Firmware Update Makes Transferring to SD Faster

J_K

I have a Kodak 1GB card that came with my camera a few months back and it took 45sec to do the 40MB in size Sin and Punishment N64 file. That's pretty fast going from Wii to the card, and before it would take I think around 3-5min to do it. I have less gripes now about the Wii storage capacity for certain, other than the size cap games have in general which keep a few gems out.

Re: Updated Cave Story Artwork Causes Controversy

J_K

Wow so a bunch of uptight little children fanboys(girls) are whaling like babies over a slight graphical update to some sprites despite the fact the game itself is fully intact and even adds more area to it? And of course it's known the game has a classic mode for the whiners too.

One word: pathetic

Re: USA VC Releases: Ys Book I & II and Samurai Shodown II

J_K

I own the SMS version of Ys and while good it's vastly inferior. Audio/visual are notably worse, controls are a bit more rigid, maps I think if I remember right are also changed/simplified, and attacking enemies is more pickier(easier to die.) If you're that thrilled with that version you'll love the pure copy of it that was later refined into those PC and DS 'Eternal/Complete' releases.

Re: USA VC Releases: Ys Book I & II and Samurai Shodown II

J_K

I know it's not so much productive bringing up the babies, but the thing is, it's less productive to have to read one post, skim by 20 crybabies, read another one or two, skim...etc. Point was the place just needs moderation so things stay on topic as I like to discuss some of the classics that pop up and it makes it very hard to where I don't bother that much.

Re: Ys Book I & II

J_K

Surprising no one has bothered to list the block count it takes in storage. I really do need to know this as I'm basically out of room so something is going to have to get rationed.

I really want to tear into it NOW, but I am working on Ys6 (Ark of Naphistim) right now which is truly epic and fantastic. It captures still the same dramatic challenging feel of Ys and can like all Ys be fairly unforgiving if you're not leveled enough, but in this one you can swing your sword.

Re: USA VC Releases: Ys Book I & II and Samurai Shodown II

J_K

Wow so much petty bs from a good many of you and truly it's disgusting. It's a shame the site ops here don't moderate the posts better to keep the crybaby crap out. The entire thread should have been primarily the discussion of 2 great titles popping out on the VC and while some are on that topic, others why to cry, fan boy it up or whatever over games they selfishly want right here, right now, or 'else' whatever their meaningless else will be.

The lot of you should be posting +/- against the titles and debating along those lines and not Mother, Mario, etc as it's just sad. Perhaps they need to create a forum or something for all the whining to get captured in so those who aren't interested in the tears and drama don't have to put up with it who want to discuss the subject whatever it is.

For me it's a happy time seeing my old TG16 CD favorite come back to life as I had the cd just up to a few years ago because I got rid of the Duo awhile back and this lame emulator I was using wasn't too XP friendly. I just need to find out how much crap I'll have to erase or shuffle onto a cheapo 1GB SD card to fit it. I'd grab it now but I'm doing Ys Ark of Naphistim (ys6) on PSP.

Re: Ys Book I & II

J_K

The TG16 CD version over the NES has these things going for it (from my memory as I owned the CD for a long time.)

  • Level design is as intended (and it's better laid out)
  • Enemies are better balanced (damage vs you getting damage)
  • Enemies move random to a point, then will close on you.
  • XP gain is based on what yours is so at a point you get nothing, but when you're getting 1-2xp a kill you either suck or should move on.
  • Audio is an experience in itself, the musical score is up with modern stuff.
  • Voice work is pretty darn good
  • Visuals while basically colored are drawn nice.

Re: Bionic Commando Not Approved For Virtual Console

J_K

Shocked to see some fools spewing the assumption it's Nintendo being PC. You have no evidence of that, and given it would be the NES version being released anyways it's already been sanitized as of like 20 years ago so it's not an issue. Odds are it's them not wanting to give advertising for the new BC game the jerks at Capcom won't put on Wii despite from visual evidence it being capable.

Re: Bionic Commando Not Approved For Virtual Console

J_K

Give it time with anything, the VC isn't going away for a great many years. Brother of mine works as a producer at a company and the word is the VC games and WiiWare will be transferrable to a new console, so you got this lifetime and a next to get stuff.

Re: Bionic Commando Not Approved For Virtual Console

J_K

Yah like this one isn't obvious.

Capcom screwed Nintendo placing the new BC game that looking at it could easily work on WiiWare on every system but theirs. Then Capcom comes along smiling asking them to upload the old NES game to the system. Nintendo not being completely stupid sees them using Nintendo with a gimpy $5 download as free advertising for the modern game they got hosed out of and give them the proverbial finger.

Seems fair to me.

Re: RPG Action Comes to the US Next Month in Ys Book I & II

J_K

Bluntly put...about goddamn time with Ys Book 1 and 2. I had that on TG CD since I got a duo in the middle of the later 90s up until a couple years ago via emulation and I miss it. Been really making me mad how long it sat in limbo due to Nintendo or whoever so I'm all up on getting that one when it drops.

Re: King of the Monsters

J_K

2/5 is quite an unfair rating on this, especially if you're going to recommend the sequel. If anything while this one may not look as good, it has more players, better balanced difficulty, and more entertaining gameplay value than the sequel. I'm quite familiar with both and the 2nd was just not all that great. The gameplay had some nice moves in #2, but the difficulty was yo-yo like, and the final boss was a good $2 worth of quarters at least alone as just touching him = big damage, and at times he'll just sit on you until you're dead on your back.

This one I find is odd you rip on it for being a wrestling type game and not a fighter because...well that's what it is. Also unlike #2 this one has twice as many unique creatures to mess around with.

Re: Final Fantasy: My Life as a King Downloadable Content

J_K

Ahh regardless of these nice things, it's great to know honestly you're losing nothing sticking to the original purchase.

I stick to my guns on the fact this game and a handful of others I think really do deserve a disc release. I'd even add MM9 to that given it was a little more than a modern NES rom as that would be hard to swallow for most but would be nice though.

Re: Nintendo: "Hard Drives Are For Geeks"

J_K

Ahh I get ya Ike...that could happen. Usually I'd back the save files up before erasing so I wouldn't have to start over. I even just did this again when I went from my 7yo PC to a new one about a month ago with my fat GTA3 save.

Re: Nintendo: "Hard Drives Are For Geeks"

J_K

Ike-Mike: I thought save games were kept as I don't recall ever reading something that if you move a WW/VC game to a SD card that over in the storage(save) area your game just gets wiped. Far as I know they're unique files just like a disc game and those too you can just shove right next to your game on the SD card.

I really don't get why people are being so overly dramatic over this. It may not be entirely the easiest and convenient (see: LAZY) way to go about stuff, but it's really a preference/non-issue. All I have are WiiWare, Neo Geo and Sin and Punishment stuff, all beastly files and I'm not crying about it. I get the frustration but this just is rampant complaining.

Re: Nintendo: "Hard Drives Are For Geeks"

J_K

Not a big deal to me at all, especially not enough to act like a child and pitch a meaningless boycott or pitch cheap threats. Yes it is a slight annoyance factor for sure that you have to treat the Wii much like a very old PC with a small drive having to swap around(install/delete) old/new games to play what you want at the time, but it really isn't the end of the world either.

Re: 100 WiiWare Games Currently In Development

J_K

You know what would be great? I think it could theoretically be possible too short of Nintendo being unholy jackasses and doing a firmware releae to block it. A 3rd party could make a usb drive and then so it can be accessed create a disc which you put into the system that will allow it to be accessed and then you can copy/paste to your hearts content out of the Wii menu in the saving area. That would be a decent solution and wouldn't require any stupid hacks, modding, or other lameness.

Re: Star Soldier R Tournament - Are You Good Enough?

J_K

Mmmm that's tempting. Almost as long ago as it was when Indiana Jones last hit the theaters I was the high scoring champion of Gradius III at my local mall at the Captron store if anyone remembers those. I won a lame pittance ($20 cert towards a Super Scope 6) but it still was cool. Took it by a landslide too during one of my 3 attempts. I played the hell out of that game for a good week when I found out about it.

I used to be fairly good at Star Soldier on the NES, same game here, new coat of paint and shortened. I'm tempted.

Re: US VC Releases - 26th May - Metal Slug

J_K

Looks like a good week between the two. I've played City Connection before and as lame as the premise sounds it's actually pretty amusing for an arcade port. And well as far as Metal Slug goes, about damn time. I had picked up the Wii Anthology many many months ago, played it twice, and then returned it. I can safely say I was not a fan of the crappy control setup, and the other sequels got even less fun or memorable as the number increased. I could see dropping the $9 just to have this one to throw around now and again eventually.

Re: Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King

J_K

Tell me if this is what I'm thinking about the game...

Is this like Actraiser on the SNES, except that it's SimCity(Lite)+RPG instead of SimCity(lite)+Action sequences?

This seriously looks like Actraiser where you can build to a point, and building increases your ability/stats for combat...and then you combat so you can do more with your cities and areas to advance them further.

Is that what FF:CC is because I've waited 18years for another game like Actraiser to pop up and I'll be all over this (while hating such a game so smart didn't have a 'keep-able' copy being a damn virtual download.)

Re: Introducing WiiWare World - Reviewers Wanted

J_K

Curious...is there any requirement to be able to do the writing then really? Age and general region aren't a factor. How about money? You won't be supplying Wii Point cards will you or 'gift' games so they can be reviewed on schedule?

I'm just basically curious if this is just a help the site out thing where you buy what you want and then review it much like the reader write-ups at Gamefaqs and everywhere else.

I wrote reviews and some specials for AMN(now Kombo) for 2 years from 04-06 and miss doing reviews. I think that the Wii Ware service is a great way to try out indy wares for sure from people and I think I'd love to drop my name into the bucket perhaps. I'm good to review whatever for the most part as I did in the past, but if I'm buying I'd be very much more choosey on what I'd grab as I'm not a 'game gambler' when it comes to personal funds.

Re: ESRB Update: EarthBound Finally Coming To Virtual Console!

J_K

I haven't touched that game in probably 10 years...around when I sold it once I was finished (at a decent profit.) Local shop to where I was living had it complete in box for $30 in the mid 90s...sold it a few years later for like $60 or so. There are days I wish I still had it, but probably mostly from all the online fanbase whining over being ignored so long. I imagine I could end up picking this up on the Wii as I'm not stupid enough to pay that $100 or whatever idiots have driven it up to these days online as that's just as sick as it is sad.

Re: Bionic Commando NOT coming to the Virtual Console!

J_K

Makes sense to me. Why help the other guys get some free promotional value for the updated Bionic Commando game for their system when Capcom screwed Nintendo and wouldn't put it on there?

We've seen the whining and arguments over it and I think in part there is merit considering the point and click/motion nature of the controller on Wii would be great for going nuts with the claw arm. So in the end it may suck not being on the VC but I think it's fair turn about on Capcom for shafting Nintendo on the new BC downloadable game and fair turnabout not giving promotion to the other guys who do get it.

If that is the logic they used I fully support that move because if a third party is going to screw you by not giving you the new game, but then wants to release the original as a tossed bone + obvious extra advertising for the new stuff elsewhere, good for Nintendo.

Re: Cruis'n USA

J_K

Ahh I had it, but it was never a huge favorite of mine. My argument was that it drove well enough compared to some other racers on the system, and it had a nice small variety of cars, and sadly ultimately more track to mess with than the Rush titles which is sad in itself. I just think 1 was way too harsh.

Re: Cruis'n USA

J_K

I don't want to use a word like completely as some points are valid, but it's a nearly completely unfair scoring on this game. Yes, against non-arcade based games it is a bit limited, that's a given as all racing quarter munchers end up that way. Honestly the game captured the Crusin' USA arcade game fairly well aside from some really cruel censorship of the bikini bimbos into mostly covered girls which was just dumb. The handling worked well, collision was good as well (Far nicer than Ridge Racer 64 was by a longshot much years later.) The big problem with the game is that it's limited in being an arcade game and with that can wear thin a lot faster just due to limited content, but it is a good racer and I think should have been more fairly scored on a 3/5 rating or even a 2.5 if need be but 1 is indefensible and I'm not even a huge fan of it by any means.

Re: Top 10 RPGs We Want To Come To The Virtual Console

J_K

Wow another CT suck-up...and I will never understand why that game gets so damn overrated for Nintendo just like FF7 does for Sony. They're not so much mediocre, well they are in parts, but they just get more love than deserved and a lot of it I think lies in unfounded nostalgia. I had both back in the day, finished one of them, got far (ff7) in the other and while they were good, neither were earth shattering.

That aside I would agree with the listing as is here and it really does raise some good points.

Re: Virtual Boy Confirmed for Virtual Console

J_K

Fun...had one of these before. I'd love another crack at Mario Clash, Red Alarm, Nester's Funky Bowling and a few others.

Thing is...April 1st is tomorrow. The post also mentions that a press release would come tomorrow which is April Fools Day. Personally I call bullsh*t on it, but hey it would be nice to be proven wrong on this one.

Re: Japanese Virtual Console list - April 2008

J_K

Dracula X SNES (in JP Dracula XX) is a sidestory of the PCE game...well sorta sidestory/remake whatever it is really. I own it, great game...really fantastic work was done on it even in its retro style (no 360 whip) and the music is amazing.

Re: Master System Hitting US 'Soon', 400 Points Per Game

J_K

I knew this was coming for a long time, but despite that I picked up a basically new SMS for Christmas and a large pile of around 25-30 games (most of which are excellent.) Yay for people who can't get one as $4 is amazingly fair and smart on Sega's part to try and get some more bites from odd sized leftovers on peoples cards + to undercut the more known NES things. I hope they move well and I really can't wait to see things like Alex Kidd and Phantasy Star show up for those who miss em or never had em.

Re: Japanese Virtual Console list - April 2008

J_K

I used to have that Castlevania game on CD when I had a Duo last decade and it was fantastic. The game was hard, had a lot of neat second exits to find to do other stages, and the musical score was some of the best of all time out of the series. I miss the game quite a bit, and I'd hope to think Konami wouldn't keep treating us badly and will give us this one as I'll pay for it again...count on it. Much furious I will get if this one stays away, much like the disgusting delay with Ys Book 1+2 that was OK'd months ago well back into 2007.

Re: Uridium

J_K

I played this as a DOS game back in 1990 as it came for free on this CD with an old 386sx16 I got for Christmas (first PC.) I used to play the hell out of this along with a few other gems on there like Into the Eagles Nest, Infiltrator(1 and 2), Skyfox and more. It looks bad, even by that time it didn't look good all that much, but the gameplay was one that kept one playing and that's what is important...the desire to keep going.

Re: Master System games hit the Japanese VC

J_K

I have a Master System that I just recently bought as a Christmas gift to myself from a local who basically had it new in box w/7 games for $40. A real hell of a deal and since then spent around maybe $75~ to get a library of around 30 games. I'm happy to see this come to the VC as the system has some insanely quality titles for sure and is just fun to use. I know some will say I should have waited, but while the VC is nice it's digital...no hard copy, and Wii won't last forever.

I'd hope for you guys they release stuff like: Phantasy Star, Alex Kidd in Miracle World (or Shinobi Land), Ghouls n Ghosts, Fantasy Zone 1/2/The Maze, any of their old arcade ports (Shinobi, Afterburner, etc), Zillion, Ys Book 1, Columns, and many others.

And to Matt on #16... Sonic 1 on the SMS is Sonic 1 Genesis in very fine form. Sonic 2 though is from my memory when I had a Gamegear Sonic 2 from that.
