Re: Kit And Krysta Reveal Their Least Favourite Mario And Zelda Games

Effortless-gamer

@somebread the wider Zelda fan base would wholeheartedly disagree on the Zelda 2 statement. Zelda 2 had it's fans. They're wrong. But they're allowed their opinions. Lol. But seriously Zelda 2 is far far FAR more divisive than Twilight Princess.

I'm not even really defending it. It's my least favorite 3d Zelda, mainly because it's so derivative of OoT. But it's still a worthwhile entry into the series with some compelling characters and amazing music.

Mario Sunshine, I kinda get. It has wonky difficulty spikes all over the place and feels rushed out the gate - because it was. And nsmb as a franchise as a whole...just feels bland. I honestly even felt that way about the original on the DS.

Triforce Heroes is another matter though. Unlike Zelda 2 it's near universally disliked. Not because there isn't the potential for a good game. But because of self imposed limitations from Nintendo. Expecting 3 friends to have 3ds consoles and a copy of the game was ridiculous.

Not being able to play with a friend and a random person was just poor implementation of an already mediocre online service from Nintendo

It was either 3 friends or 2 randoms and it sucked because of it. And the less said about trying to play it single player, the better.

If anyone prefers that mess over TP or MM has a very strange taste in games, in my opinion.

Re: Round Up: The Pokémon Legends: Arceus Reviews Are In

Effortless-gamer

@larryisaman I am basing my opinion on his content from around 2 years ago, tbf. I unfollowed him on YouTube around then due to being tied of his predictable, negative reviews where nothing was ever good enough.

The video named "the new Pikmin HURTS ME" and a few others after that were what made me sigh, roll my eyes and think "this guys a tool".

His content may well be different now, but for me, that phase he had of "nothing's ever good enough for me and Nintendo should tailor every game exactly to match my expectations otherwise it's not good" put me right off him.

Re: Random: Here's GTA V Being Played On A Game Boy (Yes, Really)

Effortless-gamer

Really misleading click bait title, guys, come on. I thought you were above this.

They aren't playing gta 5 natively on the Gameboy. It's being used as a monitor.

Is it incredibly impressive? Yes! Is your title way too misleading, given half the people here won't actually read the article before commenting? FLICK yes. Knock it off.

Re: Digital Foundry Continues GTA Trilogy Analysis, Sets Switch As 'Bottom Tier' Version

Effortless-gamer

Techlands port of Dying Light is out on Switch, not to mention the amazing work Panic Button have done over the years with their excellent ports, all putting this travesty to shame.

GTA 3 is 20 year old and looks.....the way it looks. There's no reason it shouldn't at the very least be a solid 30fps with a higher resolution.

This is clearly not a simple case of "well the switch is underpowered, what do you expect?".

Re: Mini Review: Dr. Mario 64 - Diagnosis: A Bit Rubbish

Effortless-gamer

@Dr_Corndog clearly, you have no idea about writing fundamentals or how reviews should be written.

Yes I use the word "objective" a lot. Because that's how reviews should be written - objectively. Duh. Of course ultimately it always boils down to one persons opinion, but deliver the facts to back those opinions up.This review is full of completely subjective comments like "it kinda sucks" and "lacks fun and skill" without providing any detail to justify them.

If you don't understand why this review is badly written and certainly not "one of the better reviews on Nintendo Life or otherwise", I really don't know what to tell you, dude...

Re: Mini Review: Dr. Mario 64 - Diagnosis: A Bit Rubbish

Effortless-gamer

@Dr_Corndog "This is actually better written than most game reviews, on this site or in general". Are you freaking serious?

"It sort of sucks." This is literally in the 2nd paragraph. This is not how you start a fair, reasonable review.

"The problem is, we* just don't find it especially fun or interesting."

NL gave Dr Mario Miracle Cure and Dr Mario World 8/10 so he certainly isn't speaking for everyone. So who is this "we"?

"Outside of a generally not-that-enjoyable premise, Dr. Mario just doesn't seem to lend itself to much in the way of skilled play and competitive fun"

Speak for yourself, Stu. There's plenty of skill involved to be good at the game. Just because you're not good at it doesn't mean it lacks skill

The review is objectively poorly written and unfair as he clearly can't be unbiased. Look at the above quotes. He literally says the premise of Dr Mario is "not that enjoyable". That's not directed specifically at Dr Mario 64. That's directed at the entire franchise, as they all have the same premise.

If he doesn't like the premise of what makes Dr Mario the game that it is, his review cannot be objective and fair. Thats what makes it a poor review.

If the review was fair and objective, I don't think I'd argue with his opinion on the score at all, but it's the fact that he went into it knowing he doesn't find the premise enjoyable. That negative frame of mind doesn't lend itself to a well written, fair review.

Re: Mini Review: Dr. Mario 64 - Diagnosis: A Bit Rubbish

Effortless-gamer

@wsz I agree accusations of toxicity were a bit silly. And that it's not the outlets job to find someone who can be objective.

But c'mon, you read the same review everyone else has. Can you honestly say that it was a well written, fair review that really gave the game a chance?

Re: Mini Review: Dr. Mario 64 - Diagnosis: A Bit Rubbish

Effortless-gamer

@Link41x In Stuarts defense, he has every right to his opinion and it's just as valid as ours, that's not the problem.

As I have mentioned previously, he just wasn't a good choice to review this game as he isn't able to remain as objective as possible due to his preexisting distain for the franchise.

The royal "we" was used a few times too, I feel.

Re: Mini Review: Dr. Mario 64 - Diagnosis: A Bit Rubbish

Effortless-gamer

@SakuraHaruka well, reviews are always just someone's opinion, so it's all subjective.

The thing is, if you have someone who already has a bias against a game, they shouldn't be chosen to write a review. A reviewer is expected to remain as objective as possible.

Like I said, above, this was a badly written review by someone who shouldn't have been picked to write it.

Re: Mini Review: Dr. Mario 64 - Diagnosis: A Bit Rubbish

Effortless-gamer

@topher6490 I agree with you. This is objectively a bad review. Similar thing happened with Maiden of Blackwater on their sister site, Push Square.

They got someone who already hated the original game to review the remaster/hd upgrade and expected him not to give it a bad review, why on earth would you choose someone who already dislikes a franchise to review a game in said franchise? It makes no sense.

The result over there was much as it is here; an unfair, amateurish review from someone who shouldn't have been chosen to review a game that they couldn't be objective with.

My wife and I have played this a fair bit and it definitely doesn't deserve a 4/10. It's really a 6 for me.

P.s. Nintendo life mods will probably ban me for this post, as they have done so previously, when I've politely called out a reviewer. Apparently it made me "rude".

Re: Site News: So, Where's Our Baldo Review?

Effortless-gamer

@gaga64 yooka laylee was a terrible 3d platformer with about as much charm as a vegan fart.
As someone who wanted the original game to be banjo threeie and backed the project, and even worse, waited for a switch version, yooka sucked balls on all platforms and this comparison is completely invalid.

Re: Gallery: Sonic Movie Trailer Comparison Pics - Check Out Before And After Sonic's Redesign

Effortless-gamer

@Heavyarms55 so you're just going to ignore my point about Hulk in Thor Ragnarok that tramples over your pretentious essay stating Marvel are the ONLY STUDIO that understands and that they actively reduce cgi characters mixing with real actors onscreen? Ok.

Come on, it's not about understanding how cgi characters interact with real actors. It's about the budget for special effects. The Sonic movie will have a tiny budget compared to any of the Marvel movies you're referring to and comparing them is not only unfair, it's ridiculous!

Marvel have Disney levels of money funding them and comparing this movie to something Disney can afford to shart out is entirely ill considered and a poor comparison from you.

Disney have some of the best 3d effects studios in the world under their belt. When the budget is reduced for a "less financially successful" franchise, such as Thor (compared to the Avengers), the cgi takes a turn for the worst.

I'm not saying Thor Ragnarok is a bad movie, it's great. But that doesn't change the fact that the cgi is frequently dubious, making your argument entirely invalid. Even worse, you can't argue so you just ignore me.

Re: Feature: 20 Dreamcast Games We'd Love To See On Nintendo Switch

Effortless-gamer

I think omitting Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 because in your opinion "they suck" when the title of your article isn't "20 games I'd like to see on the Switch" it's "20 games we'd like to see on the Switch". We. Plural.

I don't believe for one minute that everyone at Nintendo's life shares Damien's opinion that these games were garbage. There's no "I" in "we".

There's a reason that so many Sonic fans want a SA3. They may have aged fairly poorly, but in all honesty, a lot of early 3d games have. I see people all the time saying how amazing Banjo Tooie was on the n64 but go back without those rose tinted glasses and you'll see a stuttering slideshow mess of a game at times. Is it still incredible now? No. Was it in 2000? Yeah. My point is this doesn't take away or detract from how enjoyable they were at the time.

Re: Nintendo Files Lawsuit Against ROM Website Offering Nearly 300,000 Switch Downloads

Effortless-gamer

I'm not going to debate the legality or morality of emulating retro games, I certainly don't approve of the piracy of games that can still be purchased and obtained legally and morally.

Having said that, if I want to play BS Zelda Ancient Stone Tablets, I see this as victimless. Nintendo are not in anyway making money off of that game and emulating it is not taking money from developers pockets.

In my opinion, as long as there are no official ways to purchase a game which still supports it's publishers and developers, then I have no problem with it.

If anyone calls me "entitled" because I wish to play a game that looks like a fun game to play, I would like to point out that nobody NEEDS to play any games. We all play games because we want to.
