Beautiful review - can't wait to play it soon after I play a bit more of Hades 2, but-! A small correction needed - The score was done by Gareth Coker, of ORI fame. Mick Gordon and some others are doing one-off guest tracks for the bosses and secret bosses.
@Glasso Personally, I disagree! Time is hardly a positive here, and the result for silk song has proven to be far more divisive based difficulty. Personally, I didn't find it worth the wait at all, though I bought it because of an ancient blood pact I may or may not have made.
@hisownsidekick Weird west has the style, but above everything else - it has the ATMOSPHERE. 'Mignola' doesn't just refer to a style; it refers to the mood and tone that comes along with it - and weird west, with spooky ghosts, Wild West skeletons and a really gloomy isometric vibe, is perfect in that regard. As I added below, it was naturally so good the same folks made Hellboy: Web of Wyrd! The ultimate mignola game!
Gameplay-wise, weird west is pretty solid, with some great dialogue, but a bit slow overall in combat, upgrades and pacing for me to stick with it as long as other rogue likes. That's the thing about me, if I click with a rogue like, I click with it to the end of time - Hades, Hades II, Have A Nice Death...
@mouseclicker Seconded! I recommend playing literally anywhere except switch, though. Load times and lag are horrendous. Overall, good game, PERFECT visuals, suffers due to the rogue like structure and a need to drag out the game in the final act. (No noticeable improvements on Switch 2) Good music too, though, and the late great Lance Reddick is really, REALLY good as Big Red.
By the makers of Weird West, incidentally! They have such a love for mignola it matches my own obsession perfectly.
While they have nailed the surface-level look of Mignola as someone else commented, I honestly think it doesn't go much further - Weird West was SO good, in that regard. Too many effects for me personally. THOUGH the gameplay does look fun, might get it down the line on a sail. Very luckily now, with the exception of XCOM 2 and Metroid Prime remastered, I do not have a backlog (On switch at least)!
This is that rare fusion of genres/gameplay/visuals that absolutely brilliantly appeal to me on a deep, deep level. Similar to Hades, which was comic-book style visuals + stunning music + fast paced gameplay + in-depth story, this one is - ABSOLUMETLY gorgeous animated visuals in a way I genuinely can't describe but that scratches a primal itch in me + very fast and fun beat-em-up gameplay with a surprising amount of depth apparently + an amazing fantasy setting + a gareth coker soundtrack.
I'm absolutely stoked for this game and all its aspects. I know people don't like stuff like this, but I strongly prefer hand-drawn or stylised comic booky visuals like this to pixel art. Can't express the number of times this type of animation is there in a cinematic or reveal trailer for an indie game, only to then revert to rather overdone (imo) pixel art for the gameplay in a disappointment for me personally. These are like dream visuals for me.
@PinderSchloss In all fairness, TTRPG gameplay is very hard to make look entirely exciting, even for marketing. Only one that fully manages it is XCOM with its dramatic gameplay camera shots that's like, the only thing the trailers all use.
@Denoloco Believe me when I say 'just' does such a disservice to it. If you're even remotely a fan of the first game, this one overhauls so much and plays so differently but keeps a lot of the same structure, story, style, etc. - but all in really uniquely fresh ways. I love it to death and back.
This is so great. I'm pretty sure this was on the Switch 2 dream wishlist for a lot of people - happy to see its coming. If it's anything like the Wolfenstein ports, this will be a great way to play it, though obviously wanting to see actual performance specs and visuals first (I'll still get it). As a massive, massive fan of Indy, this is probably my personal favourite minor announcement so far.
Honestly I'm one of those people who doesn't mind 30fps most of the time, but for this - it's non-negotiable.
The parallax scrolling of the backgrounds, If slowed down and jittery - absolutely will hurt my eyes and some of others. And of course, the performance specs are a no-go, it's a tad unthinkable.
Really want to support this game and have had the pleasure to play on PC - will happily double dip, but only with that patch, preferably for both consoles, actually.
