@SteveW Oh yeah, who enjoys a challenge in their video games?
...A lot of people. I love rogue-likes very much, because the good ones require the player to grow into the challenge the games present. I love slowly improving and feeling myself begin to overcome the myriad of challenges that previously hit me like a ton of bricks. Isaac is definitely a "full fledged" game, contrary to your first blush impression.
@GreatPlayer I'm going to ignore your absurd remarks and focus on your line: "If you have read my comment carefully it was not even talking about the quality of the game - I was commenting on the difficulty level of the game." I invite you to reread /my/ comment: " I was responding to your wholesale and frankly misguided discount of the Kirby games based on their accessibility." I am not supposing that everyone should enjoy Kirby games, but I was providing a subjective (if the subjective element was understated in my comment) defense in response to your disregard of the games based entirely on accessibility.
@GreatPlayer There's really no need to resort to the tired, strawman Nintendrone approach. I was responding to your wholesale and frankly misguided discount of the Kirby games based on their accessibility, disregarding their obviously well-designed elements. I've been gaming since the NES as well, so don't assume (as you may or may not be) that I'm inexperienced with games.
@GreatPlayer What a strange sentiment. While K:EY and Kirby games at large are accessible to a younger audience, that doesn't detract from the excellent level design, music, and myriad visual styles that routinely provide an excellent gaming experience. When playing K:EY, were you fixated on the lack of deaths, without looking around to see the brilliant stage designs? Did you fail to hear the excellent OST? You'd really do well to lose your fixation on audience and enjoy good games.
I'm really torn on getting this. I love Atlus like no other game company. But I keep hearing this game is very easy if you have any idea of what you're doing. Having played tons of difficult RPGs, I'm afraid the challenge just wouldn't be enough. I think I'll hold off for Demon Gaze for now and get this once it's perhaps cheaper. Then again, my complete Atlus 3DS collection will no longer be complete without this...
I don't know why I read through these comments, but I did, and I'm much worse off for it. The negative reception here is even worse than when NL posts a great speedrunning video and it's bombarded with salty people who have no idea what speedrunning is and how it works. I took the time enlightening them on that, but it's just not worth my time to explain things to the ignorant NL masses anymore.
Man, Nester for Smash would be legitimately awesome.
And I loved the Frostbite Tweets, just because I love seeing companies and (relatively) high profile people dig themselves into a hole with polarizing messages, and then watching them try to save face. You keep an eye on the industry long enough and you can begin to make a nice list. Reminds me of Phil Fish, particularly. Except he didn't really try to save face, I suppose.
Good review. This really is a wonderful game from a superb series, and it's definitely worth playing by anyone who likes platformers. You can check my post on the 3DS eShop board to get more info on the series.
"Thracia 776 has the dubious honour of being the very last SNES title released in Japan..."
This is incorrect, and a common misconception. Metal Slader Glory: Director's Cut came out even after Thracia's physical release, and this was actually the last "Nintendo" game (it was developed by HAL) on the platform.
No Sayonara Umihara Kawase. That's incredibly disappointing, given it was already delayed once, and now the February release window has passed. I think I'm just going to import a physical copy at this point.
Good grief at these comments. Sex appeal isn't limited to Japanese media - watch any movie or commercial produced today. It's a result of being humans. Unfortunate, perhaps, but not really escapable. Deal with it.
Not as steep as you guys make it seem. Pretty small figures, sure, but the quality looks good from the images. It takes time to hand paint small objects like this.
expected/10. I've played WayForward games for several years now, and I've never understood the hype. They have no idea what they're doing most of the time. Jake Kaufman is the best part about WF.
@Luigifan141 Virtue's Last Reward also received the 10/10 it deserved, if only for some fleeting moments. But I'd rather not go there, as I've had enough of my posts deleted because of that fiasco for my liking.
I highly doubt it's the best 3DS game, considering Etrian Odyssey IV, Untold, and Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry's Wonderland 3D exist, but I'm looking forward to it nonetheless.
@Pete_Stooge Earthbound > You. Looking forward to this. I already own three versions of this game and after years of being a fan, I still really can't get enough of Mother.
So stoked for this. Glad I held off on downloading it until now. For anyone that hasn't played this series before, check out Umihara Kawase Shun: Second Edition Kanzenban for DS, which includes the SFC game and the superior version of the PSX game, plus some extra levels. If you consider yourself a fan of platformers, you need to play this series.
@Captain-Balko So you say EBA is the best rhythm game, but you won't play any others to see if it's ever dethroned? Beautifully crafted logic. You should really check out Ouendan too.
I really liked Daigasso!! Band Brothers DX, though I hated the perma-download limit. Hopefully there will be no limit to downloads on this one. Looking forward to picking this up on my JPN 3DS in two weeks.
Bought the CE of the first game and really was not impressed at all. I enjoyed my playthrough of Zelda II much more. That said, I'll keep my eye on this one in case it shapes up better, as I love a good CE. <__<
@silo2142, you thought it was..."stupid"? How odd. At least you've come to your senses. This is a remake of the first game, so you'd probably be fine waiting for it, but IV is superb, and available right now assuming you are in the US, so I would go get it and II-III right now.
@PokemonManiac, just for 3/DS? Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 1 & 2 (2 is superior; get Pro if you're okay with imports), Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked and 2, and Shin Megami Tensei: IV. That said, EO is certainly a series worth getting into along with all these games.
Really happy this is coming out here, especially after XSEED gave reasons why it would NOT be coming out here. The T rating is a bit worrisome; is XSEED doing some censorship, or is T really all it needs, when the two Corpse Party games that came here got M ratings, though I know the horror, gore, and violence certainly contributed to the ratings with those ones, having played them both myself?
@Ryoga, sorry to burst your bubble, but there's quite a number of people who have been working for many years on speedrun optimization and finding all the time-savers (with OoT and other speedruns, of course), so someone completely new to the scene is not going to be making any breakthroughs. That isn't to say there is nothing more to discover, however.
@Link-XL, I don't think you quite grasp the point of a speedrun. People who run games and work on speedruns have undoubtedly poured many hours into the games, including playing them the "right" way. For most runners, they do it with games they enjoy (though I'm sure this isn't always the case, particularly with runs of bad games), and have thus already done everything the game has to offer, and are now partaking in the challenge of pushing a game (and human ability) to their respective limits, and that is what is done here, and what is done with all speedruns.
Amazing how many people here have no idea what they're talking about. This is not cheating, this is not hacking, and this certainly is not unskillful. As some good souls have said, speedrunning is about beating games as quickly as humanly possible (and TASes are similar but vary in some types of external manipulation, though still no hacking is present), and people pour tons of hours into learning all facets of a game to learn how to manipulate it to achieve the quickest victory possible. It's incredibly fun and rewarding, and certainly takes a ton of time to master, and it's quite an insult when people say how little skill there is, or how this is merely cheating. Doesn't listening to Cosmos' explanation give you a little taste of the levels of complexity present in such a run? Watch Siglemic run Super Mario 64 and tell me there's no skill involved, that he's merely cheating. In short, please, know what you're talking about before making such bold, untrue statements.
Can't wait for New Leaf tomorrow. I own all the ACs (sans the N64 one; hoping to snag that one soon), and e+ has remained my favorite. Here's hoping NL dethrones it.
Great review. As a big EO fan, I'm absolutely loving this one. Wouldn't say it's quite dethroned III yet, but airship > boat by a country mile (even if the bay music was wonderful).
Always liked the look of this one. But one of these days, I'm finally going to get my hands on the Limited Edition Mother 3 Micro. One of these days...
^ Then you really have no right to judge then, do you? Nice they got up a "fixed" review. I understand the old one was taken down due to a disagreement, but I can't help but feel VLR got shafted scorewise.
@belmont
You understand this is a well-established series, yes? They wouldn't completely change the gameplay that's worked so well just because it's on the next platform. There's plenty of new stuff visible in the trailer anyway.
Anyway, saying I'm incredibly excited for this game would be an understatement. Can't wait for it to be released!
@rjejr Are you not familiar with this series at all? The art style is that of Akira Toriyama's, of Dragon Ball fame.
This game has me incredibly conflicted. Dragon Quest is my favorite gaming franchise, and I've never been disappointed with any installment. At the same time, I've never gotten into an MMO for the sole fear that eventually, the game is going to die and the server will go down, and all of those hours of work will be forever gone. And I usually don't like to pour too much time into one game due to the sheer number of games on my backlog that still need to be completed. But I'll probably end up getting it and paying for several months to please my DQ obsession.
@dark-insanity Please refrain from saying "Japs." It's a derogatory term and is offensive.
Anyway, once I get my Japanese 3DS I'll definitely be picking up IIWiaSRwaGIPXXX (best acronym ever) and Pokemon x Nobunaga, assuming it doesn't make it stateside.
I too used to collect the first few "sets" (if you can call them that) of Crazy Bones. I doubt the game will be any good, honestly, but it's kinda neat to see the franchise was revived.
My overall GotY? Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation. If a DQ game is released, you can bet it'll be my Game of the Year. Not counting remakes, though, it would probably be Rayman Origins or Ghost Trick.
@Pogocoop Oh, no no no no. Pokemon didn't invent monster recruiting. Dragon Quest has had it since DQV in '92, several years before the Game Boy Pokemon games. It is not a rip-off by any means. Yuji Horii saw how well people liked the Monster recruiting and decided to make it the focal point to a DQ spin-off, and thus Monsters was born.

Nothing for me. I already have four different versions of SMB3 (doesn't everyone?), and I think Golden Sun is an extremely mediocre JRPG series.
