Sega has officially confirmed today that the Sega Mega Drive Mini 2 will indeed be coming to Europe as well as North America (under the Genesis name, of course).
It's not that surprising, but up until now, Sega was yet to confirm if this would be the case. Now we know it'll be hitting shelves on the same day in Europe as it will in North America and Japan, on 27th October.
The miniature console will have 60 (+1) games, which include brand new ports, games never released in English before, and even a handful of Sega CD titles!
There will be a few differences between the European/North American console and the Japanese one ā such as no Popful Mail or Lunar: The Silver Star or Eternal Blue ā and many were also hoping for Rocket Knight Adventure but there's a pretty wide variety of titles on the system. Pre-orders for the console open in September in Europe.
Stellar titles such as Lightening Force: Quest for the Darkstar (which is Thunder Force IV), Truxton (with the music all fixed), Streets of Rage 3, and The Ninja Warriors are just a handful of the games that have made it onto the system.

Did SEGA not publish the included games in a list?
@RushDawg We were just grabbing the full list ourselves. I've popped it in there now And we've got a guide too which has all of the Japanese games for comparison https://www.nintendolife.com/guides/mega-drive-mini-2-games-list-every-genesis-and-sega-cd-game-announced
That's actually not a bad line-up of games. Some hidden gems, and some honestly unexpected titles to see, like Ecco The Dolphin. Probably won't pick it up though. No space for another console. Lol
No Lunar is so disappointing.
@shock_trooper yeah but itās unsurprising given the licensing rights for it would be a nightmare
@shock_trooper Sort of expected it but yeah, that's what I really wanted
@AlanaHagues
Awesome, thank you!
Great line-up, man. I wasn't expecting Crusader of Centy, or both Ecco the Dolphin SEGA CD Editions. I mean, we get to play the lost gems on there. or even an updated version of Space Harrier II from the first Mini! Too bad there won't be a Genesis Mini 3, modelled after the ALREADY miniature Model 3 Genesis, or modeled after the SEGA CDX, an All-in-One unit that plays both Genesis AND SEGA CD games, and is compatible with the 32X.
I still can't believe they've added Robo Aleste. I loved that game so much but it's never been released on anything other than the Mega CD and I haven't played it since the mid 90's. It's the one shmup I want on Switch more than any but I said I would buy the mini console if it was added and here we are. I still don't really want or need a mini console but having the ability to play this beauty again is too hard to resist. Silpheed in there as well, another of my favourites. Not sure how well that will hold up today but Robo Aleste still looks superb.
It better NOT have Genesis written on it
Also shame the power switch is a slider and not a push button like the original, also, is the colour scheme going to be that of the Japanese (Grey, Blue and Red) or the EU (Black and Red only)??
Of course, I was kind of hoping for Dragon's Lair and Space Ace to be on the thing, but since it's better animated in HD, on modern consoles and Arcade1Up's Machine, it makes more sense that it DOESN'T be on there.
@OorWullie
This Mini actually has a pretty solid shmup lineup. Robo Aleste, Thunder Force IV, Fantasy Zone, Truxton, etc. are all great.
It's a bummer that Snatcher didn't make the cut, or any Konami games at all really.
@Bunkerneath Haha, no, I think I scared some people by using that image! We've swapped it out now (should look like the Japanese one)
@AlanaHagues But the SEGA Tweet itself has the video of the Genesis, not the Mega Drive
Really looking forward to this. Nice library of games and some I havenāt heard of. Could have done without Clay Fighter and the Ooze and I wish Quake Shock and the CD version of Earthworm Jim could have made it but I do like what I see here.
Console looks great, and the games list is strong. My only issue is I already have a Mega Drive Mini and I simply don't want another one in my house. When you consider the games take up zero memory, I find the whole idea of now having multiple of the same console a bit of a joke frankly.
No-one creative enough at SEGA to sell a Mega CD attachment for the existing Mega Drive Mini? It's just stupid if you ask me.
My problem is that Sonic 3 & Knuckles is still not included. I was hoping for that.
@Bunkerneath Ohhh yes sorry. I'm sure it won't! At least I hope not.
Shadow Dancer is a severely underrated game; along with the original it's the most fun to play (in my opinion).
@RushDawg Yeah, that's weird coming from their presence on the first mini. And pretty disappointing, I was hoping to finally get Rocket Knight in a legal way.
Still don't know why we Europeans get 10 more games.
Very good list (granted you already have the first mini). Lacking Sonic 3, Mortal Kombat II, some Disney games and Konami games, but overall Sega is doing good with these.
Dang... i was looking forward to playing Popful Mail legit, but now that its confirmed NOT to be on the Western Releases of the Mini 2 that kinda breaks the deal for me.
(Not that the other games like Robo Aleste aren't expensive but thats the one i was looking forward for the most, being a Wanderers from Ys enjoyer)
Sure hope we get art on the European model soon. Let me see those red power buttons and the best MD Console boxart.
I hope we get it in Australia.
Space Harrier? Is this a new port? It was only the sequel came out on MD?
@Angelic_Lapras_King Same. The EU Mega Drive II was my first console as a kid. That's going to hold more nostalgia for me than the 1st mini did, assuming Sega does make a proper EU version.
EDIT: Although, seeing as the Genesis Mini 2 has a switch instead of a power button, I'm betting they won't bother to make the EU version accurate either.
@Moroboshi876 Aren't there 61 games for all versions?
@RainbowGazelle Maybe, but up until now they were saying the Mini 2 would feature 50 games, no word on European release until today, and when they said there would be 60 titles I must have misinterpreted it.
At least I have Snatcher for the Turbo Grafx Mini. Itās in Japanese and I canāt read it what so ever but still.
No doubt it will be extremely easy to hack & put any games you want on it
I wish it had Haunting starring Polterguy. I always wanted to give that game a try.
Yeah I will probably get this now
@RushDawg It certainly does. I just noticed Hellfire is on there too., I loved that. It was Hellfire and R-type that got me into shmups. I've been waiting on M2's ports of Truxton and Hellfire.
I want this more than a switch pro.
@shock_trooper I'm sure there will be (Project) Lunar. So you'll be able to play whatever you want.
@Hordak Yet we got two EA games on it (Desert Strike and Populous).
Funny that the physical US/EU copies of Populous won't work on many original consoles because EA didn't put the necessary TMSS authentication code in, and they were aware of it and just put a warning sticker on the box.
@SpringDivorce i think i read that space harrier 1 and 2 are on it, both remasters with better frame rates? so not the same as the space harrier 2 on the original mini.
@Dimey
Yeah but SH1 never appeared on the MD, so I'm pretty interested to see how it turns out.
Crusader of Centy, Golden Axe II, and Street Fighter 2: The New Challengers are the games I'm most hyped for. Has the price been announced?
Did they say where I can buy it ?
hope i manage to snag an EU pre-order, think it'll sell out fast!
no price confirmed for EU that I can see, and preorders open in september
@OorWullie Iām glad that they added Robo Aleste, but I really wish they had included MUSHA. We missed it the first time too.
