Like any long game, I feel I am hitting my burnout point with this now. I am around 65 hours in, completed nine chapters. It feels like each story chapter is separated by an ever increasing wall of grind. Even though I am blowing through every story mission now since four Skells seems to give you an absurd advantage (this is also the best way to level, I found, if you're willing to sacrifice some Skells. You can take on enemies 10 - 15 levels above you in a Skell and absolutely melt them, and it is the only thing that gives out reasonable amounts of XP. Absolutely no clue what the point of basic missions are when they give like 50 xp and it takes like 7k to level up). Getting the ability to fly was cool, and discovering there is this whole extra world above the map, but I could quite happily bang out the last couple of story missions in one go at this point and move on to something else, but the arbitrary level gating is just blocking me from doing so.

I'm just about to start chapter 5.
All side quests and affinity quests are done.
Explored as much as possible.
Collecipedia almost done.

Character levels are at 31
Most of the middle classes are maxed. One on six, 3 yet to start...

I'm Level 25 at 15 hours and just started Ch. 6

If you wanna power level go to the multiplayer console interface in the Blade Barracks, select the bottom option which just pits you against an enemy and you start right next to them. No chasing them down in the world. Then in the list of missions choose the 2nd one down. Even at Lv. 15 I was beating that mission in 20 seconds or less. And it grants 700 XP each time. You can replay it over and over. You'll gain a level every 1-2 minutes.

General rule is gain 5 levels per chapter. So after chapter 5, before accepting chapter 6, you wanna be sure you're at level 25. This is to ensure you're level 60 by chapter 12.

@JaxonH awesome stuff my guy. Good to see you back in the forums conversing. I haven't played in a few days since I'm trying to finish avowed this week. Should finish up tonight and back to xcx tomorrow.

Ah cool, didn't know you could use the online stuff in that way, might have to make use of it so I can get these final story missions out of the way before I end up just giving up.

I just got my Skell, and now the game feels properly overwhelming in its customization options. I’m now mopping up a few more affinity missions and side quests before I progress the main story.

@JaxonH your little trick worked wonders. Leveled up a few times and did some tough side missions. Thank you. Now I'm at level 26 at 18hrs.

After the last few chapters felt like I had completely trivialised them by having four Skells, the Chapter 10 boss said "hold my beer". Honestly, not even the Chapter boss, but more the overtuned minions they just spawn in the billions. The whole fail it three times to get them to turn the difficulty down thing feels awful when you are burning through Skell insurance every time. It is funny too, cause this is the first story mission maybe ever I've gone in over levelled, and yet it felt like I was about 10 levels under, the difficulty of this game is so out of wack.

On a wider note, Sterling put out their review of the game the other day, and it really put into words my feelings about this game, in a way I couldn't articulate myself. And I feel it is kind of true of the whole Xenoblade franchise. This weird push pull, love hate, thing they force upon the player for seemingly no purpose. Review is here if anyone wants to give it a read: https://www.thejimquisition.com/post/xenoblade-chronicles-x-d...

@Pizzamorg
I just did an affinity mission between 5 chapters and 6 and it said recommended level was 21 and minimum was 20.
The "boss" creature was a lvl 19 and I was level 31 and I had a ridiculously hard time. I had 19 health left, the other 3 members were all dead ... I barely beat the bloody thing!

I've found some of that happening too. Especially when there are multiple enemies coming at you at once. I've over leveled and getting pummeled by enemies 3-4 levels under me and my team.

The other thing is like maybe to some degree it is on purpose, but I am at a point in the game where fighting out of my Skell feels like it takes an absolute lifetime versus fighting in my Skell where it feels like I melt stuff in literal seconds. Like I kinda get the idea here, but it feels kinda out of wack in both directions. Between that, and like you both said, how kinda meaningless player level feels like it means, at least when it comes to you being over levelled (it means a lot of if you are under levelled for some reason as you'll basically get two tapped by an enemy just a few levels higher. Wish it worked like that for the player too!), just a lot of stuff feels really off.

I can't claim an alien wreckage nor the container next to Blade Tower.
I thought they removed field skills?

I'm finally able to spend a lot of time on this game over the weekend. This is my first time playing the X game and I've played and completed both XBC1 and XBC3 just for comparison. My impression of X so far has been very positive and pleasantly surprising. I just want to say that the performance and art direction of this game is freakin amazing! Looks so beautiful and runs smooth on the OLED. I don't know how Monolith are able to achieve this level of artistry on such a vast open world game with no resolution and frame-rate issues. There's basically no load time as I traverse across the different continents without using the fast travel option. I'm still at awe playing the game in handheld mode without noticing much frame-rate drop or a degrade in resolution which I was afraid of initially since all of the games in the regular series had all kinds of technical issues (especially XBC2).

As far as the game-play, it has a lot of depth, more so than any other Monolith games, which can be overwhelming at first. I'm finally settling in now as the game opens up after chapter 3 and gives me the freedom to do whatever I want at my own pacing (combat practicing, managing and upgrading my Arts/Skills, crafting new gears, side missions, exploring its beautiful world...etc). I've rarely ever used the switch screen capture function, but the vistas in this game can be so beautiful that I had to stop and take it all in with a few captures or two. I'm already enjoying this game lot more than any other Xenoblade and I'm looking forward with the rest of my journey! Time will tell if XBC-X can take down Breath Of the Wild as my favorite, all time game on the Switch.

For the chapter 10 boss, Mechanoid Slayer augments are your friend. Stack enough of them up on your G-Buster and you can potentially one-shot Zu Pharg.

Also, don't neglect combat on foot because there are mandatory fights in the last two chapters where you can't easily use your Skell. At the very least you should be able to maintain Overdrive indefinitely but the best on foot builds hit harder than the best Skell ones, thanks to a higher damage cap.

Anyway, I've rolled credits on the game for a third time and, for me at least, it still stacks up as one of the best games I've ever played. It's a tough one to rank alongside the rest of the Xenoblade series, as it's a very different game, but re-exploring Mira has been a hoot, and I keep finding new places that I missed on previous runs.

Can someone explain to me what's hanging on the neck of a wasteland evello?

@NintendoByNature I would love to hit you with a great, well-informed biology theory, but I’m pretty sure someone on the design team pretty much just thought, “wouldn’t it be funny if it looked like it had a couple of you-know-whats on its chin?”

You can’t control the way others talk to you, but you can control the way you talk to others.

NintendoByNature

@KidSparta lol, my thoughts as well. I definitely did a double take from a few angles. It's definitely "those."
