Update [Wed 31st Mar, 2021 05:15 BST]: Instead of launching in theatres and HBO Max on 16th April, the upcoming Mortal Kombat movie reboot will now air on 23rd April.
According to Deadline, Warner Bros. is currently focused on Legendary's Godzilla vs. Kong, which is likely to bank the biggest domestic takings (around $20M-$30M) at a domestic box office opening during the pandemic.
Mortal Kombat's trailer also got the most views ever for a red band clip, so there's plenty of excitement about it.
Original story [Fri 19th Feb, 2021 03:15 GMT]: Warner Bros. has officially released its first-look at New Line Cinema's upcoming Mortal Kombat reboot movie, which will air in theatres and exclusively on HBO Max on 16th April.
The film will recreate the Mortal Kombat tournament with familiar characters like Sonya Blade, Jax, Raiden, Liu Kang, Kano, Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Goro and Shang Tsung, while a young MMA fighter named Cole Young takes the spotlight. Warning: the trailer below contains graphic violence and swearing.
The film is helmed by award-winning Australian commercial filmmaker Simon McQuid - who makes his feature directorial debut, and the producers include James Wan (Aquaman), Todd Garner (Into the Storm), E.Bennett Walsh (The Amazing Spider-Man 2). 10/10 right here. Putting kindergartners everywhere to shame.
It's a pity that they have invested what looks like a decent amount in to the VFX but they couldn't cobble together a decent script.
This is gonna be campy as hell, I can feel it already. There's just way too many characters to give fan service to and that's gonna be hard to balance with non-gamers/normies getting confused by a large cast of odd characters to them.
It looks.good from the trailers but it's suppose to. The problem is they try to take something like Mortal Kombat and try and make a story that lasts for several hours which you just can't.
Is it me or are video game movies really starting to try and be good.
Fantastic.. can't wait for this.
I'm going to tell the directors to GET OVER HERE and make a better movie.
Amazing trailer. Man that subzero looks cool.
I hope the movie is as good or even better than the trailer.
@gutrippabear Actually they removed a lot of them from the script. Johnny Cage being among the most notable.
As far as costumes go it looks bloody awsome. That scorpion sub zero looks smashing (pun intended) and the effects look pretty cool too. Glad to see no pandering about when it comes to the blood either.
Im not sure on the story tho... But hey, even if we get an OK movie based off a video game, still better than 99% of the others out there.
@Silly_G So you don't think that was a gag?
@gutrippabear I'm ready for it. A Mortal Kombat movie SHOULD be campy. As long as it has great choreography and is shot well (everything tends to be close-up shakycam now, but that rope dart fight with Sanada looks GREAT), then it'll be exactly what I want to see.
@Silly_G @backup368 When I read the comment before I watched the trailer I thought it was actually a funny gag but then in the trailer the quote is in a dead serious tone and the music doesn't frame it as a gag...bizarre misfire, honestly.
It looks to be a fantastic movie, the only few concerns I see though: Mileena's teeths doesn't look accurate, Sub-Zero seem like a bad guy so will there be a second Sub-Zero later on, no Kitana, Baraka, and Johnny Cage yet, not sure if they are in a tournament or a war, they mention the tournament but the trailer makes it seem like there isn't one, still unsure about this Cole Young character yet but he doesn't look like an annoying character so I'll give him a chance, and was that suppose to be Reptile at the end? Either way looks promising, I'm planning to watch it on HBO Max at my bro's place come April, hope it's at least better than Annihilation and Legacy.
Let's be honest, nothing will beat the masterpiece that is Moral Kombat: Federation of Martial Arts.
Wheres the theme song?
I hope this new Mortal Kombat movie will be rated R unlike the 1995 movie.
Will this be a good movie if fans complain about the wardrobe?
i really hope the movie is good. the voice actors seem a pretty good fit for the characters. and it does look really promising from the trailer too.
LOL was Kano always an Aussie?
Where the hell is Johnny Cage?
@Ghost_of_Hasashi Was that the only thing in accurate about Mileena?
With this and the MH movie coming, are we back to terrible video game movie adaptations?
I went to see the original in the theater as a teen and thought it was the coolest thing ever! To this day it's probably still my favorite game movie of all time! It's a 90's cheese fest for sure now but seeing it at the time when MK was everywhere and at the peak of it's popularity was pretty neat!
That first trailer from the original where it shows sub-zero running up the wall and doing a back flip was awesome!
This reboot looks alright i guess. Certainly it will have some thrilling fight scenes and be a fun couple hours of watching guys and gals beating the crap outta eachother. I just hope it's not a movie of nothing but fight after fight with a paper thin plot and cornball humor.
Surely they can do better than MK annihilation. Talk about a disaster!
Decent, but we old people with kids are biaised by the seminal first, cheesiest action movie ever.
Will we pay to show « that new one » to our kids, not sure...
@backup368 Yep, I also thought of it as a gag, but it was edited in the trailer to sound more serious than it will probably be in the final movie.
" on a mission in BRAZIL "
OH YEAH! Lindomar will be playing Sub-Zero!!
Pure cheese but i will watch it anyway.
@timp29 yep.
Well it looks far less cringe than the 90's thing, which I enjoyed as a kid. I'm open for it.
What! No cheesy, 90s techno theme song?? What shenanigans is this?!?!
Looks *****, in a good way. I'll watch this when I am hungover for sure...
Looks OK I guess. Loved the original when it first came out as, like a lot of us oldies, we were caught up in Mortal Kombat mania. Watching it now though, it is pure Paul WS Anderson trash (naff CGI, poor use of Raiden, a cheap Sub Zero death, a crappy looking Goro and a duff way to introduce Reptile in the mix just for, ya know, the sake of it). I don't feel it from this trailer, but I hope the tournament is the main plot and not some war movie shenanigans al la Street Fighter The Movie. But I guess we'll just have to cross our fingers and look to la Luna.
looks like it could be really good. first detective pikachu. then sonic and now this. Video game movies are finally getting good. oh and by the way Sonic movie is now available on hulu and amazon prime. it is a fun movie to watch.
Looks cool, but why mess with that Dragon Logo? That cyberdragon is so wrong.
@xxx128 Yeah, l also hate it when people like blades with blood on them. It look so cringe.
@timp29 in MK11 the voice actor appeared to continously shift between aussie and cockney, I never knew if that was intentional.
Cole Young looks like the most boring character of the lot 😴
I'm not a fan of Mortal Kombat (SF2 ftw!) but I thought they did a good job with this. I mean, the premise of the games is a bit cringy, so naturally that will resonate with any film they do. But I didn't think it looks rubbish at all.
The trailer was pretty awesome, hopefully the movie will be enjoyable as I really want to like this one.
@michellelynn0976 Agreed, both Detective Pikachu and Sonic the Hedgehog were really good, hopefully the new Mortal Kombat movie can keep that trend going.
I already said this in a previous article in regards to this movie but this is how I approach video game movies. I approach video game movies like a big family Thanksgiving dinner gathering. I'm going to be annoyed, unintentionally insulted (and sometimes intentionally), embarrassed, at times angry, awkward, and overall not looking forward to the torture. However, if I keep my expectations on the floor to begin with and crack open as many beers prior AND during the event I'm bound to have a better time through it and just be entertained.
I thought the trailer looked really good
Remember playing the very first one and loving it
Looking forward to giving this a watch
The original film adaptation is one of my favorite B-movies. I don't expect to like this as much, but if the fights are suitably fun, I'll be satisfied.
@Dethmunk Based on previous experiences. Movie studios adapted video games to movies before and most of them were hilariously bad. They did stop eventually, but now with these movies coming out I just wondered if it's going to be the same.
All I can say is it doesn't look bad.
@backup368 No Johnny? No thanks.
Always interesting to see so many differing opinions on the same topic. I'm in the positive camp, though.
I thought it looked better and more professionally shot than any other Mortal Kombat movie before this one, and the special effects do indeed look good, and like they were made by people who love and understand the games, so I'm definitely hopeful that the end result of this is going to be an entertaining experience.
@Sourcecode I did too, and I still own the DVD. I also have the more recent web series on disc and hard drive, but this still looks better to me, personally. Of course, that's obviously just a taste or opinion thing, so feel free to disagree...
@Freddyfred did you not catch the remix towards the end of the trailer?
I've still got HBO Max until a little past that date. I'm good.
@ThanosReXXX Positive camp here as well
It looks entertaining as hell.
I want the movie to "get over here" as soon as possible!
Looks like a straight to DVD bargain bin movie from Wal Mart
@LaytonPuzzle27 lol it's been RR since the first trailer lol
@chiefeagle02 I signed up for HBO Max on the 20th - same day I bought a 75" tv - for the Synder Cut, GvK and MK, so this is a big slap in the face. I bet I'm not the only one. Screw'em, I'll wait.
At least I got HBO Max to see it so I'm good.
@Zuljaras Well, my friend, that sure is somewhat of a tardy reaction...
@rjejr Ah, the Synder Cut. Who in the world doesn't want to see that one? Almost just as entertaining as anything Nitnedno does...
@rjejr That was my idea too, get the month with the Snyder Cut, Kong vs Godzilla, and Mortal Kombat. Kind of glad I was late a week in subscribing. I'm sorry this affects you.
I didn't know theaters were opening?
@Tasuki I dunno. I've seen some spectacularly bad or dull trailers.
Plus the first MK movie was and is still pretty fun.
I'm actually excited to see the new film.
No Johnny Cage? Go Woke go Broke!
@chiefeagle02 Yeah I'm sorry it affected me to, and that I reacted to it so harshly. It's not like I even wanted to watch it really, was just going to after spending the $15 on HBO and the $ on the TV. But I got a reprieve when I found out last night New Mutants is coming to HBO Max April 10th. Not that I have high expectations for NM, but Id' much rather watch it than MK since I've seen every other X-Men movie. So I'm going to see it as a trade and move on, and probably never remember to watch MK.
@ThanosReXXX Snyder Cut was pretty good. Certainly after the 3 hours - which was 2 1/2 hours too long - Batman V Superman Director's Cut. The 2 hour version wasn't too bad, but he added nothing of substance w/ the extra hour, it just dragged. Snyder Cut was almost an entirely different movie considering it was mostly just a recut. The epilogue was a pointless and nonsensical 10 minutes which probably left a bad taste in people's minds but the 6 chapters were good. Can never get enough of the Wonder Woman's action music. Thanks for reminding me I need to remind my son to watch it.
@rjejr Haha, you're welcome.
As it so happens, I actually had a discussion with a co-worker about the Snyder cut this week, seeing as he was so enthusiastic about it and I wondered if, already having seen the mangled original, it's still worth watching, and he convinced me that beyond a shadow of a doubt, it actually is, so it's on my to watch list right now.
But it is on the long list, because I already have too much to do in several areas, so sitting and watching something for 4,5 hours is something I currently don't have the time for.
P.S.
Speaking of super hero movies/series, this bombastic display is doing the rounds through all major cities over here right now:
@ThanosReXXX "this bombastic display"
You're gonna need a bigger gauntlet. 😎
Well I'm glad somebody else talked you into watching the Snyder Cut and not I so I can be Presidential and take no responsibility whatsoever if you hate it. FYI - the 4 hours are long, but the 7 black screens w/ chapter titles on them do make for convenient breaks if you want to watch it a little at a time. We stopped in the middle for about 5 minutes to circulate the blood in our legs, we're old. While I normally wouldn't recommend taking a long break during a movie, they aren't meant to be watched that way, Disney is forcing it upon me w/ WandaVision - 3 tv episodes then two 90 minute movies - and Falcon and the Winter Soldier which I'm pretty sure is just one 5 hour movie broken up into weekly installments. They are barely trying to make it episodic. Though I've only seen 2 so far, and ep 2 wasn't too bad. But it still feels like a movie.
In fairness, for the past 20 years most tv shows I've watched have bene 1 long plot per season, but those shows still had an episodic format of a "villain of the week" or some such, they kept the TV pace of beginning, middle and end of each episode. WandaVision did not do that at all after the first 3. So if you did have to watch the Snyder Cut in 6 parts - don't stop for the epilogue it's shorter - I suppose it's manageable. Maybe 3 nights, about 80 minutes each would work the best. 🤷♂️ At least w/ the chapter breaks it's an option.
@rjejr But is it on Netflix, though? I believe not, right? Amazon Prime, if I remember correctly, and I'm not about to subscribe to yet another streaming service just for that one title, or even for multiple titles.
Heck, up til a year ago, I was still quite adamant about never going for streaming services, and look at me now: I actually buckled and got a premium membership. Mostly for my old man, though. Netflix has a lot of sci-fi, which my dad LOVES, and what with the lock down and restrictions and all, he's feeling even lonelier than normal, so Netflix binging is a great way for him to take his mind off his situation.
I'm also going over there tomorrow for the Easter weekend, which over here means that come Monday is an extra day off, so we'll have a two day sci-fi marathon, and we'll probably finally finish off the last season of Grimm. Great fantasy/detective series, if you haven't seen it yet, and it actually has a decent ending, unlike some of the other shows I recommended to you...
I recognize your sentiment about some series feeling like one big reel cut into pieces, and under normal circumstances, with regular broadcasts, only getting one or two episodes per week is sometimes an absolutely annoying wait.
As for the Snyder Cut: I guess I'll just have to download it, seeing as it'll probably never, well at least: not in the foreseeable future, be released on any other kind of medium that I own or am subscribed to.
P.S.
Did you right-click/View Image on the Captain America shield picture so you could view it in its actual size? The stamp-sized version that you see here just doesn't do it any justice...
@ThanosReXXX Grimm was really good, except for that one season w/ the zombies - I mean whatever they were.
Snyder Cut may be HBO MAX only, not even HBO, as they try to get people to pay $15 a month just for their stuff. I signed up for a month b/c I really need to see Godzilla vs Kong but I'm not quite ready for movie theaters yet, even w/ 1 vax shot in the arm. So for $15 I watched all 3 Snyder movies - Man of Steel, which we'd never seen, Batman v Superman Directors Cut, I had seen the original and should have stopped there, they added an hour of nonsense that served no purpose, and the 4 hour Snyder Cut, I had seen the 2 hour original but they are almost completely different movies. Friday night I watched Godzilla (2014) by myself, tonight I'll rewatch Godzilla King of the Monsters w/ my wife who hasn't seen it, then next weekend GvK w/ my wife and son. My wife and I also watched a dramedy we'd been wanting to see and we have 1 other drama to watch. And I may watch Suicide Squad ahead of Suicide Squad 2.
So it was $15, but I think we're getting our moneys' worth. And I was suppsoed to watch Mortal Komabt - hey look at me back on topic 🤣 - but that fell thru, BUT, I just found out HBO MAx will have New Mutants starting April 10th, so we'll watch that just b/c we've seen every X-men movie so far. I believe I typed that paragraph earlier, but possibly to someone else, not you.
Also as an HBO bonus my son as I've probably said is living hundreds of miles away on a college campus and he's watching some of those movies too. Maybe a gray area but he's my son and he'd be watching the movies w/ me if he was home, which he will be in 6 weeks, so...
Have some fun w/ your dad. If you did sign up for Amazon Prime "The Expanse" is a pretty good sci-fi show. Though not only is it 1 long plot line for 5 seasons, the seasons themselves kinda feel like half seasons, so after season 2 season 1 felt done and after season 4 season 3 felt done. Haven't watched 5 yet b/c we're waiting for 6, the last season, to watch both as once. Same for "His Dark Materials" which we watched season 1 but skipped season 2 waiting for season 3, the last season. More fantasy than sci-fi but also on HBO should you ever get it for a month.
Now I'm getting ready to go to my parents for Easter Sunday, just a few hours, they're fully vaccinated but we aren't. Hoping to spend most of the time outside, 60' and sunny. That's 15.5 to you. 😉
@rjejr Well, that doesn't really sound like a very "outdoorsy" temperature at all, even for people like me, who don't mind the fresher weather.
As for Amazon/Amazon Prime, no interest in adding that to the list, I'll just download/torrent anything that I can't get on Netflix. I already buckled once, and that's more than enough, far as I'm concerned.
I had to really think about a Grimm season with "zombies", but then I remembered: it was that long story line about the Royals wanting to kill the Grimm and sicking Baron Samedi on them, who is the legendary cult figure upon which basically the entire real life voodoo culture is based, so personally, I actually found it quite interesting, as with most of the enemies and monsters in the show, which are obviously all based on myth and legends.
Shortly before the whole COVID happenings, there were even talks about making a spin-off of the show, with some of the original characters also popping in every now and then. David Giuntoli, who played the lead role already volunteered, so who knows what lies ahead for that series. I'm hoping they're actually going to make it, because there's not a lot of similar shows out there, unless it's your more basic vampire or werewolf show, or witches, the latter of which, in the shape of the reboot of Charmed, has become all kinds and shapes of wrong, because it now obviously has to be too aware of itself, multi-racial, woke, lettuce, gherkin, bacon, tomato and noodles... (if you don't understand the specific usage of all the words after "woke", just take the first letter of each word, and it'll dawn on you).
On a side note: I found Suicide Squad okayish, at best. I mainly got triggered to go watch it because of Margot Robbie's "insanely" (pun intended) good portrayal of Harley Quinn. Actually kinda hot as well, if I'm totally honest...
And as it so happens, I had downloaded some movies, to take with me to my dad, one being Wonder Woman 1984 and the other being Godzilla vs Kong. I hope you enjoy that one, because I found that one also just okayish, and maybe even less so, due to the total B-list of actors, and obligatory stuff.
But having said that, the fight scenes where satisfyingly solid, and quite enjoyable, in my opinion, so I hope that's your main reason for watching as well, otherwise you might be disappointed.
Speaking of disappointment: I don't understand what all the negativity is about concerning WW84, because even though it kinda fizzled out in the last quarter of the movie, I thought it was pretty decent. Maybe not as good as the first Wonder Woman movie, but that one actually set the bar pretty high, where DC movies are concerned, if you ask me.
And it had better source material. The Golden Age of super heroes in the Great War always ticks boxes for a lot of people, uninitiated and comics fans alike. A nice touch and one that older viewers might appreciate, is a surprising cameo at the end, which I'll not mention here, just in case you haven't seen it yet...
@ThanosReXXX Saw WW84, think we had a free week trial. BTW, you can always get free week trials of almost anything, as long as you are willing to always have half a dozen email addresses at your disposal. 😉 I think we liked WW84 more than the original, which we just thought was Captain America: The First Avenger w/ some bad CGI villain tacked on at the end, so not impressed. Not impressed at all, too much hype may have added to that. The second movie started on the wrong foot for me as the first 20 minutes were origin story - which we already saw in her origin story original movie. 😝 I think bringing back the dead guy was kinda odd. He wasn't so stupid that he wouldn't know what a garbage can is. The invisible jet was a nice touch, but the flying scene went on a bit long. Cat girl was ok, surprised she wasn't too woke for you. 😂
You know, I used ot think I was getting some brain issues - alzheimers, dementia, senility - b/c I can't remember anything. But when I really thought about it I think I do remember things, but I just dont' care, so the thoughts are hard to access w/ no feelings attached. Unless I really loved or really hated a game, show or movie, I just don't recall anything about it a day later. But I do, if I try I can remember, but the lack of feeling or caring makes me forget, b/c I just don't care. In the literal sense, not the teenage angst sense.
So whether or not I like Godzilla vs Kong may not matter, b/c I won't care, and therefore I wont' remember. I think it's a lack of testosterone, or some other chemical. It goes way beyond my usual seasonal affective disorder I always felt during cold dark winters, now it's a year round thing.
I Godzilla 2014 was still garbage, but G:KotM was better than I remembered, b/c I remembered not liking it, but it wasn't that bad. So I'm going in w/ low expectations for GvK. Just hoping the music was in it. I don't think the 2014 film had any of the original music, but KotM had it a bunch. Remastered a bit maybe, but close enough to get the blood pumping, make it more visceral. Watched it Sunday night and pretty much all I recall now is the music.
Doesn't matter what that zombie guy was called, while I appreciated that he was dealing w/ true zombies in the Louisiana sense, it was still kinda zombies, and the guy becoming one, then staying one, lasted too long for us. Hadn't heard about a Grimm spin-off, even if I did I would have forgotten, but Juliet is playing Lois Lane on Superman now, so probably not her.
@rjejr First impression that I got from the movie criticism part of your comment is that you're watching them the wrong way: just grab a bag of popcorn, brain switched to zero and enjoy the ride.
That is the ONLY way to watch superhero flicks. There is no deeper, philosophical meaning to be found in them, regardless of whether or not some of them try to put in some kind of moral lesson, something that the He-Man & the Masters of the Universe cartoons actually already did a hell of a lot better more than 3 (4?) decades ago...
(on a related side note: could also be that you're just too impatient, also looking at your zombie comment. Either that or too New Yorkish. I'm WAY more forgiving and patient, apparently... )
All kidding aside, I enjoyed both movies, and I didn't mind the minor revisit to Diana's youth. I thought it was fitting, because she's reminiscing a lot, seeing she's more or less a demi-goddess living an almost endless life, and being alone and all makes for melancholic thoughts.
But more importantly: you have to keep in mind/remember that the movie is made for, with and by women. Kind of like how Black Panther was basically an all-African American effort. And you know how women can get sometimes. Just smile, say "yes, dear" and continue along...
Concerning bringing back her true love Steve, that was obviously because she wished it, so not too stupid at all, in the context of things. Might also be that she pictured/imagined him to be a little simpler/dumber than he really is, which is also evident in the first movie where she is clearly shown to be his superior, intellectually speaking. But maybe I'm reaching there.
Anyway, I liked the movies, I like Gal Gadot (did you know she's married to a Dutch guy and that she actually does speak a multitude of languages in real life as well?), so they were more than enjoyable enough for me, hence the earlier comment of not getting the negativity about it....
As for Superman, I suppose you mean the DC series? That isn't on here yet. We're slightly behind in some ways, and with some shows, we're on even foot with the States, so it's probably a rights and/or money thing why some things are broadcasted more or less simultaneously and others only years after the first aired in the US.
Anyway, what would happen with the spin-off would mostly exclude the original cast, although Trubel was rumored to feature more prominently, and the rest would only guest-star every now and then, which could easily be combined with any of the actors being in other series as well, and of course, most of them are, by now.
@rjejr P.S. not zombies in the Louisiana sense: baron Samedi was actually from the island nation of Haiti.
@ThanosReXXX "New Yorkish" Well that's my usual general excuse, yeah.😎 I once had a good friend in grad school who upon meeting my wife said he couldn't like her b/c she was too "regional". We took that to mean to New York. He was an older gentleman from Georgia, I think they like their women a little more passive and silent way down south in the land of cotton and peaches. So yeah we mostly dislike everything. 🤣
I don't set the tone for movies, movies set the tone. If a movie comes out all serious, like Captain America or most of the DC movies, then I take them seriously. If movies start w/ a joke, like most of the Marvel movies, then I joke along.
One of the best recent superhero movies is Aquaman, b/c despite being DC the movie is bright and colorful and beautiful and everyone is laughing and having fun. We also like Green Lantern despite universal criticism b/c it's a fun movie. If a movie doesn't take itself too seriously than I wont' either. I'm not a huge fan of Avenger's Endgame. I'll watch Infinity War, even though it's sad and everyone dies, b/c it's just a more enjoyable movie.
We probably only really enjoy about 20% of what we like, tolerate 50% and dislike 30%. We'd probably dislike a whole bunch more but I watch trailers and try to be selective. But sometimes things just don't click. 🤷♂️
Haiti zombies and Louisiana zombies are the same zombies. Which we all learned in 1973 watching "Live and Let Die".
Superman is on "The CW" as it's called over here and Juliet has been in Supergirl for 4 or 5 years now playing Lois Lane. Superman is a spinoff of Supergirl, b/c we all live in Bizzarro world now.
I didn't mean to say the idea of Steve coming back in WW84 was stupid, I get it, make a wish, old lover comes back to give you some of that good good luvin', b/c in 1984 Superman is only 4 years old, or minus 2 depending on which DCU film you ask. But the way they did it? Another guys body, who doesn't even look like Steve? And spending all that time on wardrobe? Just get naked and do it. It was an SNL skit gone on too long.
2 emails down, 1 to go. 😁
@rjejr Since when are Louisiana and Haiti the same? I wouldn't try that line on the indigenous practitioners of voodoo, if I were you...
I don't think we're going to agree entirely on super hero movies setting a tone. I'll agree to the obvious, which is that compared to Marvel, the DC movies are always trying to be darker and edgier, largely due to the logical fact that the comics are also darker in tone, but in general, super hero movies are all "switch the brain off" popcorn movies, and as such, shouldn't be dissected that much that you get to a point where the small, meaningless things would annoy you that much that you'd pose them as genuine criticisms...
None of what you mentioned so far annoyed me personally, and you're basically talking to a living (and sometimes highly annoyed by the smallest of things) anomaly here, coming from having serious anger management issues in my youth to discovering that I'm actually highly empathic. Imagine for a second how all of that comes together (or rather: clashes) in one single brain...
Nowadays, I've mostly got a handle on the anger part, although at times, I do need to let off steam, and I probably use games for that, currently. Back when I was "slightly" younger, it was sports and martial arts, but I don't have the time and the energy for that anymore, sadly enough. Perhaps I should try to rediscover that again, once the annoying COVID veil has been lifted from society.
Either way: point is that I actually DO fly off the handle sometimes, either in anger or in annoyance, but never about something so insignificant as a movie, especially not one based on 20 page comics...
As for Green Lantern: anyone with even a modicum of a soul inside his or her body liked that movie, although I'd reckon that most of the credit for that shouldn't go to the movie or its script, but to Ryan Reynolds. Just about any movie with him is either at the very least good, memorable, funny or downright impressive, if he puts his serious cap on.
Far as Superman is concerned: I suppose it's the same actor as in Super Girl? Might be interesting to put it on the list, then. Don't know about Bitsie Tulloch as Lois Lane, though. Will be weird to see her in something so light-hearted compared to Grimm, but who knows, perhaps I'll like it anyway.
My favorite Lois Lane's are still Teri Hatcher and Kristin Kreuk. Both stunning women and believable actresses. And Kristin was also pretty good in the reboot of Beauty and the Beast.
P.S.
"Video unavailable"
Although if it's a James Bond clip, I probably already know which one it is.
@ThanosReXXX "but to Ryan Reynolds.
The best thing about Green Lantern was obviously Blake Lively.
She had a great character arc storyline as well but nobody was into powerful women role models back then.
I'm still standing by my belief that all of the voodoo in Louisiana is straight out of Haiti, so it's the same thing. Sure, maybe a little French creole mixed in, but it's basically the same voodoo. Enough so that I'm not even going to bother to research it b/c I'm too old to learn that new trick.
At any time more than say 30 years ago anger management issues was simply being a man. My father is a man, I'm growing into a man, despite my best efforts not to, but I think naturally that's just the way things work. And when you look at the state of the world, why shouldn't we be angry? I took a lot of philosophy classes in college, I'm all about the anger management, and lack thereof.
My wife used to make fun of Kristen Kruk all the time, though mostly while we were watching Smallville - that while she was beautiful, she had no acting ability whatsoever. Her range of emotions went from smiling to smiling. She still brings it up occasionally when we see her in ads for stuff. I can't disagree, though I was too busy looking at her to care.
@rjejr Yeah, Blake was pretty good as well, but seeing as she was only a supporting role, we can in all objectivity hardly credit her as THE reason why Green Lantern was still a good and/or enjoyable movie. If I had to name one movie where she truly shines, then that would have to be "The Age of Adaline". Go watch that with the missus, if you haven't already.
But Green Lantern was indeed mainly Reynolds, and he truly is a multi-talented, multi-faceted actor, far as I'm concerned. There's only a small handful of actors who can do comedy just as believable as serious roles, or rather: the other way around, without looking like "that comedy actor who desperately wants to be taken seriously" or something to that extent.
As for my anger management comment: I believe I either didn't explain myself well enough, or you misread me. I don't mean that men shouldn't be men and that it isn't okay to be angry at things or people at any given point in time, but I wasn't just angry, I was more bordering on blinding rage, red veil over the eyes, hitting the other party until they couldn't get up anymore kinda angry, and I can definitely tell you from experience that this kind of anger isn't healthy, normal or acceptable.
In combination with my uber-empathy, that sometimes made for all kinds of crazy and an almost untenable loss of control and emotions. So, most definitely NOT one of the better periods in my life. But as mentioned before, I ultimately got a handle on the anger part, and from that firmer base, I was then able to work my way through the other part of this impossible equation.
Due to my more empathic nature, I'd be tempted to leave you your voodoo truths, but to be honest, I'm personally more of an "origin=origin and nothing else" kinda guy, so in that respect, there can be no middle ground, regardless of any personal sentiments regarding a conversational partner.
I'll just leave you with this informational bit from the one online encyclopedia to rule them all:
"Louisiana Voodoo is often confused with Haitian Vodou and Deep Southern Hoodoo, but, while related to these forms of the religion, is a belief system of its own. It differs from Haitian Vodou in its emphasis upon gris-gris, Voodoo queens, use of Hoodoo paraphernalia, and Li Grand Zombi. It was through Louisiana Voodoo that such terms as gris-gris (a Wolof term) and "Voodoo dolls"' were introduced into the American lexicon. "
As for Kristin Kreuk: yeah, in Smallville, there wasn't too much to say about her "role", but then again: most of the time, all she had to do is play damsel in distress. In the aforementioned Beauty and the Beast reboot, she has a more diverse role and seeing as she's a main character, she also had the opportunity to display more of her range of acting abilities.
But yeah, as you did, I'd always be perfectly fine with her just being in the picture and being pretty...
@ThanosReXXX Thanks for clearing up the voodoo confusion, but they still sound similar enough that I'm going to remain blissfully confused.
If you like Louisiana voodoo there was a 2 season tv show called "Cloak & Dagger", based on an 80's Marvel comic series, that had some voodoo in it, more 2nd season than the first. And the blonde is attractive enough considering I don't like blondes. Show is aimed at teens, maybe even tweens, but for reasons I can't even begin to explain I did enjoy it.
@rjejr Yeah, I've heard of it, and I was actually a fan and avid reader of the Cloak & Dagger comic. It's on my to watch list, but that's become quite long by now.
Here's hoping it never becomes as extensive as my gaming back log...
@ThanosReXXX Whoever dies w/ the biggest backlog wins I guess. 😂
@rjejr Would make for one hell of a confusing head stone text for non-gamers, methinks...
So, I reckon you're suffering from the same 1st world problem, then?
