escapeVektor (3DS eShop)

3DS eShop Price: £1.70 £5.99 (UK) / $1.99 $6.99 (US)

escapeVektor is a great game. It's not without its flaws, but they're extremely minor when compared against everything the game gets exactly right. The visual presentation is simplistic brilliance, the soundtrack is perfect, and the play controls are tight. A narrow view area and some unfair placements of enemy respawn points can both lead to unfortunate deaths, but the achievements, medals system, secret exits, bonus stages and online leaderboards all more than make up for it. It's everything that was great about the WiiWare game, but four times as big for only twice the price. You'd be foolish to let this one get away.

RPG Maker Fes (3DS)

3DS eShop Price: £3.99 £39.99 (UK) / $2.99 $29.99 (US)

RPG Maker Fes is quite an achievement; it’s a powerful, relatively easy to use set of tools that can turn your story ideas into full blown games, playable by anyone with a 3DS and an internet connection. That alone is impressive — but beyond a simple toolkit, this is a real celebration of JRPGs. Just as Super Mario Maker’s appeal extends beyond budding level designers to platformer fans in general, RPG Maker Fes is well worth a look for anyone whose 3DS cartridge slot has happily turned into an RPG warmer over the years. We do wish there were a tutorial (or at least more extensive documentation), and either a larger library of assets or the ability to design your own, but what’s here is still worth its weight in gold. If you have a story to tell, this is a fantastically fun way to tell it.

Gunman Clive (3DS eShop)

3DS eShop Price: £0.99 £1.99 (UK) / $1.99 (US)

Gunman Clive offers terrific run and gun action at a steady tempo, with distinctive and gorgeous audio and visual presentation. It borrows memorable elements from classic franchises, but has its own physics and mechanics to go with its unique sense of style. With such a small development team — of two — it's remarkably polished and comes at a budget price, and our only complaint is that it's over all too soon. Such is the enjoyment on offer, however, we suspect a number of gamers will happily replay the short stages over and over, and we expect Mega Man-style perfect runs to become a YouTube fixture in the future.

Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward (3DS)

3DS eShop Price: £3.99 £19.99 (UK) / $24.99 (US)

Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward spins a fantastic yarn, tackling various topics with maturity, intelligence and even a little humour. Its smart puzzles can be a little fiddly, but if you have any interest in story in games whatsoever and can deal with its murderous subject matter, this is a must play that will keep you engaged for dozens of hours. How it's still not on Switch is baffling, and this is the only Nintendo console you can get the game on. Snap it up now.

Resident Evil Revelations (3DS)

3DS eShop Price: £24.99 (UK) / $2.99 $19.99 (US)

Resident Evil Revelations is a truly impressive achievement, and the definitive ‘mature’ title on the 3DS. With production values worthy of a home console release (which actually arrived later), a significant volume of content, a blend of the series’ different game styles and a subtly evolved control system, this title feels like a tribute to and progression of the franchise. There are some downsides though, including spikes in difficulty and drops in frame rate that are occasionally jarring in contrast to the rest of the title. All the same, Revelations has something to offer Resi fans old and new – there are few experiences on the 3DS more engrossing or exciting.

Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold: The Fafnir Knight (3DS)

3DS eShop Price: £3.49 £34.99 (UK) / $34.99 (US)

Both a wonderful upgrade to the original Etrian Odyssey 2 and an impressive improvement on Etrian Odyssey Untold, Untold 2: The Fafnir Knight is a dungeon-crawling delight. With satisfying combat, endless customization, and beautiful labyrinths that are as fun to map out as they are to explore, this is a joyously engrossing adventure - and a truly accessible difficulty setting and user-friendly interface make it the easiest Etrian to dive into yet. If you've played other Etrian Odysseys and are looking for more, you'll have a blast here, and if this is your first time journeying into Yggdrasil, prepare to be hooked - just make sure to leave some breadcrumbs to find your way back.

SteamWorld Dig (3DS eShop)

3DS eShop Price: £1.39 £6.99 (UK) / $1.99 $8.99 (US)

SteamWorld Dig represents a strong coming together of concept and execution, with relatively simple mechanics impeccably layered to coax the gamer through its story. It's demanding and perhaps too punishing for some, but the mix of basic platforming, puzzling and action works well, with a beautifully balanced levelling system underpinning everything. Beyond the initial thrill of exploration it's questionable whether much else can draw you back, but this is a game that achieves its goals with some panache. If a challenge and a 'thinking-person's platformer' appeals to you, this one should be added to your 3DS collection right away.

Also available on Wii U eShop for £1.39 £6.99 (UK) / $1.99 $8.99 (US)

Retro City Rampage: DX (3DS eShop)

3DS eShop Price: £2.39 £7.99 (UK) / $2.99 $9.99 (US)

Retro City Rampage: DX is not quite a flawless version of the game, but it does improve somewhat upon an already solid foundation. With more forgiving gameplay that arguably saps some of its spirit and a complete lack of 3D, the biggest selling point here is going to be its portability. Fortunately that's a huge selling point, as Retro City Rampage lends itself to short bursts of cathartic chaos at least as well as it does to longer play sessions. If you have a 3DS and no version of the game already, this download should be a no-brainer. If you do already have a copy, then it's up to you how much the relatively minor tweaks are worth. Taken on its own merits, though, free from comparison to the earlier versions, it's hard to see Retro City Rampage: DX as anything less than a deranged masterpiece.

Culdcept Revolt (3DS)

3DS eShop Price: £7.99 £39.99 (UK) / $7.49 $29.99 (US)

Despite its intimidating outer layer, Culdcept Revolt is a hidden gem that deserves the attention of anyone with an interest in card collecting, strategy, or even just board games in general. It's wildly addictive, and boasts a robust single-player component as well as both local and online multiplayer to satisfy any craving for its unique, genre-blending mechanics. While Revolt's unflinching dedication to these core mechanics does hurt its story somewhat, new players will be welcomed by a wonderfully-implemented tutorial, while returning cepters have plenty of new tweaks and features to check out. It demands patience and a lot of luck, but if you like the sound of a monster-fighting twist on Monopoly then you should take the hand you're dealt and check this one out.

Ambition of the Slimes (3DS eShop)

3DS eShop Price: £0.95 £4.79 (UK) / $2.00 $5.00 (US)

All in all, Ambition of the Slimes (both on 3DS and Switch) is a lovable little game. It takes a classic concept — the grid-based strategy-RPG — and infuses it with a fun new conceit, by placing characters in the role of the lowly Slimes that would be experience-point fodder in any other RPG. Even better, it runs with that idea to deliver fun twists on the gameplay — like the 'Claim' command that lets you take over your enemies — that make the most of the theme. Add in a fun old-school presentation and a heap of personality, and Slimes is an easy recommendation for SRPG fans looking for quick, quirky fun.

Gunman Clive 2 (3DS eShop)

3DS eShop Price: £1.25 £2.50 (UK) / $1.99 $2.99 (US)

Gunman Clive 2 successfully avoids the pitfalls that can befall sequels; it offers fresh ideas along with familiar excellence, and provides a notable improvement over its predecessor. Its stylish action platforming - along with dabbles in other approaches - combines with distinguished audio-visual presentation to deliver another gem for the 3DS eShop. We recommend it as a must buy for fans of action platformers, especially those that enjoy retro nods and winks with their modern day experiences - this one's a straight shooter.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Spirit of Justice (3DS eShop)

3DS eShop Price: £24.99 (UK) / $2.99 $29.99 (US)

Spirit of Justice is every bit as brilliant as Wright's earlier escapades, with phenomenal writing, satisfying gameplay, and tons of irresistibly clever courtroom drama. The high-altitude Himalayan setting is fresh and fun, and much more than just window dressing; the thrilling Divination Séances are a wonderful on-theme addition, the new characters are as memorable as any in the series, and Khura'in's customs makes for both enjoyable virtual tourism and a constant source of plot-twisting courtroom culture-shock. Whether you're a longtime fan or a first-time offender, no further deliberation is required — this is a court date you shouldn't miss.

Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition (3DS)

3DS eShop Price: £17.99 (UK) / $2.99 $19.99 (US)

It would be easy to pick apart all of the things that Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition doesn't do, but the truth is, Capcom somehow managed to miraculously squeeze every bit of bone-crushing fighting action onto the portable screen of the 3DS and still managed to toss in a staggering number of added features and options to go along with it. Even losing a few frames of character and background animations was a small price to pay for the stunning 3D visuals. Back in the day, this was a little miracle and we've still got a soft spot for it.

Quell Memento (3DS eShop)

3DS eShop Price: £0.99 £3.99 (UK) / $1.99 $3.99 (US)

Quell: Memento shines with elegance and substance, successfully building upon the foundation of its predecessor without sacrificing the relaxing mood and tempo at which it operates. Whether the “story" resonates with you will either add to or have a neutral effect on your experience but, with or without, this is still one of the best puzzle games to be found on the 3DS - or on Switch.

The Legend of Kusakari (3DS eShop)

3DS eShop Price: £1.59 £3.99 (UK) / $1.99 $4.99 (US)

The Legend of Kusakari can stand proudly in its own right as a highly enjoyable, nicely polished puzzle adventure, even with similarities to a very famous Nintendo IP. Besides, who doesn't find enjoyment in hacking down every last bit of grass in Hyrule anyway? Addictive gameplay, along with great humour and charming character make this a very pleasant experience. When the only downside is a want for more story and more chapters to play through, you know you're onto a winner.

Puzzle Labyrinth (3DS eShop)

3DS eShop Price: £0.89 £4.29 (UK) / $2.00 $5.00 (US)

Puzzle Labyrinth confuses and delights in equal measure. Despite the name, it's less focused on creating complex mazes than it is on testing your ability to decipher clues and explore the environment, encouraging the player to experiment and learn an ever-changing set of rules. There isn't any story or visual flair to keep you hooked, but if deciphering cryptic clues and performing strange favours for monsters sounds like a good time, then we'd suggest getting lost in this budget title. Just be wary of translation errors throughout and a few overly simplistic puzzles at the outset.

Go! Go! Kokopolo 3D (3DS eShop)

3DS eShop Price: £1.15 £5.79 (UK) / $2.39 $5.99 (US)

Making the jump from WiiWare, the 3DS eShop has a new hit in Go! Go! Kokopolo 3D. With addictive gameplay, pleasing aesthetics and plenty of unlockable content, you'll find a lot to love in what is clearly a labour of love from Tanukii Studios. Hopefully, this imaginative and charming sequel will find the audience and success it clearly deserves.

Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney (3DS)

3DS eShop Price: £19.99 (UK) / $2.99 $19.99 (US)

Rather than rebuilding Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney for 3DS with shiny bells and whistles that clutter up the core experience, we’re instead treaded to a faithful rendition with updated visuals for a modern console generation. It’s the easiest way to experience the game if you haven’t before, and it’s a great way to pay it another visit if you have. As its lifecycle crawls to a close, the Nintendo 3DS has become somewhat of an archive, collecting franchise favorites and housing them all in one place — until those Switch ports, mind you. Come on, Capcom.

Monster Hunter Generations (3DS)

3DS eShop Price: £39.99 (UK) / $2.99 $39.99 (US)

Monster Hunter Generations is another must-have for fans of the franchise, blending the old with the new for an excellent overall package. Hunter Styles add a little extra intensity and tempo to combat while this game also tries to welcome newcomers with optional tutorials, with Prowler mode undoubtedly designed to be quirky and alluring to players of all kinds. The nod to nostalgia brings a lot of locations and quests to keep players busy, but loses a little of the narrative edge and focus of its predecessor. This franchise is one of the most enjoyable and immersive time-sinks to be found on Nintendo hardware. For any gamer ready for a long-term challenge, with tough battles and plenty of complexity to master, this is most certainly worth hunting down.
