Inside (Switch eShop)
Sale Price: £1.99 / €1,79 (90% off)
Inside is the spiritual successor to Limbo and it builds on its predecessor in every imaginable way. A grimly beautiful platform-puzzler that, while brief, is packed full of jaw-dropping highlights, its dark tone won't be for everyone, but it's been executed brilliantly, with gently taxing physics-based conundrums woven into a haunting wordless narrative. It's a very similar game to its predecessor in many ways, with side-scrolling elements, a gorgeous, moody art style, and a vulnerable protagonist at the heart of it. Everything's just bigger, better, and more affecting.
AI: The Somnium Files - nirvanA Initiative (Switch)
Sale Price: £37.79 / €41,99 (30% off)
AI: The Somnium Files – nirvanA Initiative is one of the most interesting visual novels we’ve played through in a while. The murder mystery at its heart is brought to life by some great writing and quirky characters alongside the satisfyingly integrated, beautifully balanced Psync puzzle elements. Even with some minor control issues, there is a lot to love in this game even if you never picked up the original. Highly recommended if you're even a little bit curious.

Raiden IV x Mikado Remix (Switch)
Sale Price: £14.99 / €17,49 (50% off)
Yes, Raiden IV is not a typical shmup by contemporary standards, and won’t be for everyone. Equally, all of these modes have been available in some form elsewhere. But as a single package, Raiden IV x Mikado Remix offers the Switch one of its best shooting game releases yet – and that is saying something on a console that has emerged as an unexpected star vehicle for the genre.
Contra Anniversary Collection (Switch eShop)
Sale Price: £3.19 / €3,99 (80% off)
While it’s a shame that there are fewer games here than in other Konami collections – we’d have loved to have seen NES title Contra Force or the now-extinct WiiWare title Contra ReBirth – the ones included in the Contra Anniversary Collection are universally brilliant. The 8-bit and 16-bit Contra games are among the finest examples of the run ‘n gun genre, and to have almost all of them included in a single release and emulated flawlessly is an absolute treat. Whether you’re a fan of the series or a curious onlooker who’s always wanted to see what the fuss was all about, this is essential.
Full Metal Furies (Switch eShop)
Sale Price: £2.99 / €3,99 (80% off)
Full Metal Furies is an impressive fusion of genres from Cellar Door Games, the makers of Rogue Legacy. A beat ‘em up brawler at heart, we wish more developers would invest such considerable effort into this sort of puzzle design in action games, and coupling that with the deep RPG systems, punchy gameplay and memorable writing makes for an experience that no Switch owner will want to be without. We can’t recommend this release enough; put in the time to explore the different tactics required with each character and you’ll find a much deeper, more replayable experience than a typical brawler.
Slay the Spire (Switch eShop)
Sale Price: £7.99 / €9,99 (60% off)
Slay the Spire is an endlessly addictive roguelike card-battler that’s a perfect fit for the Switch; a beautifully balanced game that arrived on Nintendo's system with all the benefits of an extended period of Early Access on PC. Its combination of ferocious battles, entertaining chance encounters and selection of three impressively different player characters make every run to the top a nerve-wracking and totally absorbing affair. Massively inventive sets of cards combine majestically into hugely destructive combos and attack and defence options fuse perfectly together, enabling players to use the information provided by the brilliantly transparent Intent system to strategise endlessly against the hordes of foul monstrosities that stand between themselves and victory. Sure, you’ll eventually see every enemy and chance encounter and yes, there are a few framerate niggles here and there, but overall this is one dungeon crawler that will live long in our system memories.
What Remains of Edith Finch (Switch eShop)
Sale Price: £4.49 / €4,99 (75% off)
What Remains of Edith Finch is a 'Walking Sim' that doesn’t just tell an unforgettable story – it's genuinely unforgettable. As tragic as its tale is, it always manages to entertain. As one section ends and as you fight back tears, you’ll always carry on, because the next story is as engrossing as the last. If you want a strong feature-length story that doesn’t waste a minute, Edith Finch is the one you need.
Mark of the Ninja: Remastered (Switch eShop)
Sale Price: £4.49 / €4,99 (75% off)
Mark of the Ninja: Remastered is an utterly stellar stealth game and it’s lost none of the magic that made the original such a critical darling. Strong art direction, an engaging story, well-paced open gameplay, and a slew of extra content all combine to make for a near-flawless experience that you certainly won’t want to miss out on. We’d give this game a high recommendation to all Switch owners; it’s the best stealth game money can buy in the Switch library, and one of the best ones in any console library.
Huntdown (Switch eShop)
Sale Price: £4.49 / €4,99 (75% off)
Huntdown is a delightfully detailed and expertly crafted throwback to old-school run 'n' gun arcade shooters. The 16-bit graphical style is immaculately recreated whilst adding lots of modern bells and whistles to proceedings, including a fantastic soundtrack and audio design, optional CRT filter and an arsenal of heavy-duty weapons that chew scenery and enemies to pieces as your bounty hunter makes their way from boss fight to excellent boss fight. The flow of levels may be quite repetitive but the moment-to-moment gameplay, overall sense of fun that comes from the level of carnage you can dish out, surprising amount of hammy spoken dialogue and constant pop-culture references all combine to make this one an easy recommendation, and another excellent addition to the Switch's action catalogue.
Iconoclasts (Switch eShop)
Sale Price: £5.39 / €5,99 (70% off)
Iconoclasts is a memorable, thought-provoking, and enjoyable take on the Metroidvania genre which manages to stick out from the crowd with its chipper presentation and deeper storytelling style. Couple those elements with some of the best 16-bit sprite work we’ve seen and a killer lineup of awesome boss encounters, and you’ve got another must-have for the Switch library. Don’t miss out on this one.
Abzu (Switch eShop)
Sale Price: £5.24 / €6,99 (65% off)
Abzû is certainly a standout release on the eShop, offering up an experience that breaks from the norm of goal-based gaming in favour of something that’s more focused on simply existing in a world and enjoying all its little intricacies. Those of you who appreciate casual adventures like taking a walk in a forest will be sure to enjoy what Abzû has to offer, as the dreamlike visuals, entrancing orchestral score, and deliberately sedate pace do a fantastic job of drawing the player into this alien world. Abzû isn't a game about winning, but about the journey (no pun intended) you take getting there.
Fight'N Rage (Switch eShop)
Sale Price: £6.29 / €6,99 (65% off)
Who says the beat 'em up is dead? Fight’N Rage is one of the must-own action games on Nintendo’s console. Its surprisingly deep and satisfyingly weighty combat engine combined with three strong and varied player characters and a host of cleverly-designed enemies elevate it above the usual button-mashing experience perhaps expected of entries in this genre. It’s got an excellent arcade mode that branches off in various directions as you make your way to the final boss battle, as well as a ton of unlockable modes and extras to keep you coming back for more. Whether you’re a learned fan of old-school beat ’em ups or you just like pummelling the life out of mutant punk pussycats and monkeys dressed as Bruce Lee, you owe it to yourself to experience what Sebastian Garcia has created here; it’s easily one of the best beat’em ups we’ve played.
GRIS (Switch eShop)
Sale Price: £3.62 / €4,24 (75% off)
We’re very careful when we use this word, but Gris is a masterpiece. Its jaw-dropping visual style and heart-wrenching score combine for one of the most emotional pieces of interactive art you’ll ever play. It may be too short for some, its puzzles may be on the simple side and the lack of any real challenge may not be to everyone’s taste, but this is a game focused more on fragility than ability and as long as you’re willing to go along for the ride, it’s one that will stick with you for a very long time indeed.
The Messenger (Switch eShop)
Sale Price: £7.19 / €7,99 (60% off)
2D side-scrolling action games like The Messenger may be a dime a dozen these days, but you’d be missing out on something special by passing this one up. Featuring a surprisingly long campaign, an incredible soundtrack and tight, challenging level designs, The Messenger stands as a shining example of great game design. We’d highly recommend you pick this one up; it’s the very definition of a modern classic.
Rogue Legacy (Switch eShop)
Sale Price: £2.19 / €2,99 (80% off)
Rogue Legacy is a simple take on the tried-and-true roguelike formula, but it executes what it sets out to do exceptionally well, making for an endlessly replayable and enjoyable action adventure that no fan of the genre will want to miss out on. A high difficulty level, funny writing, tight controls and rewarding RPG mechanics make this one an effortless recommendation; the design of the game makes it easy to play in short bursts or long sessions, which means it's a great fit for the Switch. If you enjoyed Dead Cells, Castlevania, or any 2D sidescroller in that style, you’re almost certain to have a blast with this one.
Ape Out (Switch eShop)
Sale Price: £3.37 / €3,74 (75% off)
The Nintendo eShop would be a considerably more exciting and interesting place if it were packed full of games like Ape Out. It’s a refreshingly original experience that more than deserves a place in any Switch owner’s library. Difficult, frenetic gameplay, strong art direction, and an even stronger jazz drum soundtrack make this the sort of memorable game that you’ll likely keep coming back to over and over for another few runs in arcade mode. We’d give Ape Out a strong recommendation to anyone looking for a distinct and unforgettable game for their Switch collection; it’s a bit of an acquired taste, but well worth your time.
Bad North (Switch eShop)
Sale Price: £3.37 / €3,74 (75% off)
A slice of Viking strategic combat right out of the heart of Scandinavia’s indie development scene, Bad North joins the likes of Element at the vanguard of a wave of smart yet intrinsically accessible real-time strategy titles. Swedish developer Plausible Concept calls it ‘micro-strategy’ and it's the perfect encapsulation of a minimalist approach that covers everything from unit management to the Monument Valley-style isometric art style. With enough enemy variance to convince you you’re playing an interactive episode of the Vikings TV show, this endlessly entertaining sea of bitesize battles will teach you to fear - and love - the sound of the oncoming horde.
Gorogoa (Switch eShop)
Sale Price: £3.49 / €4,49 (70% off)
The Switch’s eShop is saturated with bucketloads of high-quality content. This is great in one way, of course, but stumbling across hidden gems within it will get tougher as time goes on. Gorogoa is one such gem; a puzzle game quite unlike any other that deserves your attention. It is a little on the short side, but the creativity that has been put into its design, and the effect it will have on you during your time exploring its gorgeous world, is something that you’ll want to experience. If you’re looking for something new to try, this would be an excellent choice.
Gone Home (Switch eShop)
Sale Price: £3.49 / €4,49 (70% off)
Several years on, there’s no denying the cultural and developmental impact Gone Home has had on the game industry. Both as a near-perfect exercise in interactive storytelling and an example of how to handle complex and very real ideas in a game, only Life is Strange has ever come close to matching its significance. While there still isn’t much ‘game’ to be found here, the story you unravel through exploring an empty home will stay with you long after you’ve put down your Switch. Essential.
Horace (Switch eShop)
Sale Price: £4.39 / €5,99 (60% off)
Horace is something very special — the only vaguely negative thing we can say about it is the fact that there are so many spectacularly brilliant indie games on Switch already vying for your attention that we fear Horace may fall somewhat by the wayside. If you have any interest in superb level design, excellent storytelling, terrific art, evocative music, great characters, hilarious situations and emotional gut punches, Horace is a no-brainer. It's moving without being manipulative, clever without being smug, and nostalgic without being a lazy rehash. It's a platformer, but it's so much more than that.
So yes, Horace is another indie masterpiece, and every gamer who enjoys quality experiences should play it; a masterpiece that owes so much to its medium, but has the strength, creativity and identity to stand alone as something very, very special. Buy this.
In Other Waters (Switch eShop)
Sale Price: £4.04 / €4,49 (70% off)
A very pleasant surprise indeed, In Other Waters is a bit of a minimalist masterpiece that you'll often want to dip into for a more contemplative experience than the majority of the Switch's library. It has found a perfect home on the handheld, the form factor of which massively works in the favour of the game's mood and atmosphere to create an exceptional and unique experience. What you're getting here is a story that you're an integral part of, and it's one of the coolest, cleverest games we've played in a long time. An absolutely first-class effort.

Great list! Thank you for all the recommendations. I'll go for Alien Isolation and Death's Door (and perhaps Monkey Island, I played on PC and it's fantastic, but I want it physical!)
A pity I don't have plenty of money to waste... Lots of good stuff here!
I'm only looking at games that either digital exclusive or significantly cheaper than physical. Kaze and the Wild Masks fits the bill for me. Also tempted to pick up Blaster Master Zero 3 to complete the trilogy and DOOM 3 as I've heard it looks amazing on the OLED.
This a great list and also all stuff on my Deku Deals wishlist 😃
Just the 81 then...
Gris at that price is a CRIME!! That would be my #1 recommended game. It's a really compelling personal and emotional journey for anyone who plays it. Nothing else quite like it that I know of! There are definitely a LOT of great titles on this list though.
Amazing games.
Out of these I’d mainly recommend the Talos Principle, because it doesn’t get as much time in the light as most other games on this list.
Edit: also I think the pricing for the Messenger is a little off. I mean, it’s a great game but I wouldn’t recommend it for 79,99 . I’d probably only recommend Breath of the Wild for that price.
The Messenger at only 79,99 euro's? That's a steal! Or a typo.
Many great games though, some at incredible prices, but this month I went with the incredible sale of Qubic / Untold Tales games on my US account. Splatter Zombiecalypse Now, for just 0.23, and several other great ones for less than (often half) a dollar each. Insane value there.
Would love a sequel to mark of the ninja!
Very disappointed not to see the criminally underrated Murder by Numbers on the list, especially considering some of the dross/mediocrity that made it.
@Miyamotosan They didn't even mention it's sequel "Saved by Alphabets"
Sonic Mania made the list and not Frontiers? That's funny in many ways considering the comments I read on the last article here with Frontiers as the topic.
All the Capcom Arcade Stadium 2nd games are 46% off (a little over an € a piece).
I got the 3 Darkstalkers games and especially Vampire Saviour: The Lord of Vampire is a complete steal (all the games are in reality a steal at that price imo).
I'm looking into maybe getting SonSon and the 2 Megaman fighting games as well (there are a number Street Fighter games on there too - but I've already got those in the 30th Anniversary Collection)
There's leaderboards available for free as well (NSO is not needed) with Score, Timed and Special challenges to take up.
Edit: Ok, SonSon is actually free it seems.
It's quite an amazing package overall if you ask me.
I cannot recommend The Talos Principle enough. Easily one of the best games I've ever played in my life!
Diablo II and Diablo III together for £16.49 is a great deal. It's not very obvious that it's on sale though, because you have to hit the Prime Evil Collection tab on the Diablo II listing.to see it.
Sadly it hasn't been reviewed here, but be sure to pick up the platformer hidden gem Juiced!
@Shambo Ha, zapped! Thanks
@PineappleLake Juiced! Featuring Dywane "The Rock" Johnson.
Seriously, 81?!
Articles like this lose a lot of their utility with such a high number.
Just the 81 must have games….. a well curated concise list then…..
Great to see Eschatos on this list! Outstanding shmup with a killer soundtrack which I think is worth the price on its own.
How'd you score Skywalker Saga 9/10? After all the delays it was just so bland.
The fact so many of these games are a 9/10 says a lot about the quality of reviews on this site.
Some terrific games on here that I already got, and some great suggestions. :v
You must not have 81 of anything lol I own over 100 games on Switch, probably 12-15 are "must have". That's an insane amount of cash to get 81 games in one sale! Sorry for getting caught up on the #. Some good games in there anyway
Rogue Legacy I and Gris are practically free and those are both amazing games; I encourage
anyone who doesn't own them to snag them. Sales on Ni No Kuni 2 keep tempting me. Overall a lot of great games, although some of them are on sale quite often so they are not really urgent buys.
One I would recommend thats not here is Undernauts Labyrinth of Yomi for £20.
Its a super underrated and to my knowledge wasn't even reviewed by NL.
I hope this sale comes to the NA eshop!! I have many on my wish list and been waiting for a sale!
Picked up Lego city undercover when its on sale now
Tony Hawk's is £15.99, not £17.99.
A bargain either way
@Mr_Humpf thanks for the tip! Thanks to tou i've grabed them both
FWIW, I didn’t rate Gris at all - it’s quite pretty, but playing it was frankly quite boring. I’m only saying this because so many comments and reviews praise it - just a warning that you could be disappointed. I get why others love it, though. Glad you did.
I felt similarly about Horace too, for that matter - I liked everything about that game apart from actually playing it. Such a shame.
But this is a very strong list. I’m not quibbling with anyone’s score! Go for it - just read some reviews first.
If you haven't picked up Rayman legends, do it! It's truly amazing from start to finish... And then they have the complete previous game as unlockable bonus levels!
It plays like a dream, makes underwater levels cool and fun, has 5 amazing flowing music stages and is always thinking of something cool and strange to surprise you! (And it's ten bucks now!! )
@bluemage1989
NL has been reviewing Switch eShop games for almost six years, and there has been roughly 20 games coming out each week. They can't review them all, so it makes sense they review the ones that look interesting to begin with. And it makes sense that when there is a sale, they recommend the games on sale that they themselves gave a good score.
They have reviewed A LOT og eShop games here, and many of them are NOT on this list.
I got botvice in the sale, great pixel art gallery shooter, 50% of to 5 euros or something...
Thanks Nintendo Life for the list, I added some games I was missing to my wishlist (and also my collection) on Deku Deals so that later I can check which games if any I'll pick during this sale!
Persona 5 Royal and Mario + rabbids sparks of hope are obvious pick ups worth your time and money
@Krull OMG you're like my gaming twin or something - I feel the same about both Gris and Horace.
Er no thanks to any of them...
@gcunit @Krull Make that gaming triplets.
