Rogue Legacy 2 (Switch eShop)
$12.49 (-50%)
While not the first roguelike by any means, 2013’s Rogue Legacy (also in this sale for $2.99) — alongside classics like Spelunky and The Binding of Isaac — had a hand in making the now-plentiful genre the huge deal it has become. Nearly a decade later (not counting two years of early access), Cellar Door Games finally followed up on its breakout hit.
Rogue Legacy 2 builds upon its predecessor and, even for those who haven't played the first, re-establishes what made it such an enduring hit. While it’s not a game-changing revelation, it manages to follow up on everything that made the original great and makes it bigger and better.
Whether you loved the original Rogue Legacy or never played it but like a good roguelike, this is a game you simply can't afford to miss.
Sea of Stars (Switch eShop)
$24.49 (-30%)
Sea of Stars is a sensational achievement for Sabotage. Following on from The Messenger, the studio is two for two in providing impressively designed and genuinely innovative takes on classic genres.
Some pacing issues aside, the complex narrative, deep and strategic combat, thoughtful level design, and fantastic visuals and music all combine to make this one of the easiest recommendations we can make. If you consider yourself a fan of old-school RPGs, you must play Sea of Stars.
And if not? The execution and polish here are so good that we’d suggest you give it a try anyway - few games would be a better introduction and representation of what makes JRPGs great. Sea of Stars is an instant classic and a new high-water mark for modern retro-styled indies.
SEGA AGES Out Run (Switch eShop)
$2.39 (-70%)
If you originally missed out on the 3DS port, this is about as essential a retro release as you can get. Out Run has always been an infinitely playable game, and the new unlockables and online rankings only increase its longevity further. Those with the 3DS version will have to decide whether it’s worth buying what’s more or less the same game again in order to play it on their TV, but for everyone else with an interest in retro gaming, it’s a must-have.
Severed (Switch eShop)
$3.74 (-75%)
A joy to behold from start to finish, Severed is an almost perfectly executed action-adventure game with RPG elements, real-time combat, and a whole lot of slicing the body parts from various creatures. With beautifully designed dungeons full of rewarding puzzles and a pleasing combat system, you’ll likely find yourself wishing you could play more of the game when it's over. That’s the only real downside – you’ll probably be finished with the main story after six hours and left wanting more – although wishing you could play more isn’t necessarily a complaint if you're a time-starved gamer with a backlog. If you have the means to do so, we heartily recommend putting that backlog to one side and giving this one a go.
Shantae and the Pirate's Curse (Switch eShop)
$9.99 (-50%)
If you haven’t gotten around to it by now, the Switch version is certainly the best way to play Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse. Tight gameplay, detailed visuals, and charming writing combine to make this a Metroidvania that is a must-play for any fans of this genre. We’d give this game a strong recommendation to anybody who hasn’t played it yet and would still encourage veterans to consider double dipping. Though there’s nothing groundbreaking about this re-release, it’s still the same great game that it was before, and the few minor additions are a nice bonus.
You can also grab Shantae: Half-Genie Hero on sale for $9.99 (-50%).
Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance (Switch)
$41.99 (-30%)
Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance is a stellar example of an enhanced re-release done right - which is fortunate as the original version was delisted when this launched.
Vengeance's comprehensive approach to improving the story and various gameplay systems of the original release makes for an experience that’s even more engrossing. Though we were disappointed by the lack of any performance gains here, Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance is still an extremely easy recommendation for any RPG fans.
Some may consider SMT to be “Persona without the heart,” but SMT V: Vengeance cleanly demonstrates that this old Atlus stalwart still has an abundance of fantastic gameplay and unique appeal. A wonderful game.
Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove (Switch eShop)
$19.99 (-50%)
Shovel Knight was excellent in vanilla form, but Treasure Trove includes absolutely everything that developer Yacht Club has created for the game since its Kickstarter success back in 2013.
That includes the extra campaigns Plague of Shadows, Specter of Torment, and the more recent King of Cards, plus multiplayer brawler Showdown which further increases the attractiveness of an already incredibly compelling package.
These games are fantastic odes to the glory days of 8-bit(+) platforming, and having the complete Shovel Knight experience in one spot makes this a must-have for Switch owners - especially those who have so far failed to dig into this game and its add-ons. Strike the earth!
You can also pick up Shovel Knight Dig on sale for $12.49 (-50%) and Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon for $9.99 (-50%).
Signalis (Switch eShop)
$13.99 (-30%)
Signalis came out of nowhere to provide survival horror fans a near-perfect love letter to the long-running genre. It is at its best when you're darting between enemies, using stealth and patience rather than brute force. While some of the combat encounters felt a little forced, the puzzles are just the right mix of challenging and approachable. The surreal imagery and unique storytelling structure add to the overall polish of a game that is the perfect length for what it is. There have been an awful lot of homages to classic survival horror, but Signalis stands as one of the best.
Slay the Spire (Switch eShop)
$8.49 (-66%)
Slay the Spire is an endlessly addictive roguelike card-battler that’s a perfect fit for Switch; a beautifully balanced game that arrived on Nintendo's system with all the benefits of an extended period of Early Access on PC. Its combination of ferocious battles, entertaining chance encounters, and selection of three impressively different player characters make every run to the top a nerve-wracking and totally absorbing affair.
Massively inventive sets of cards combine majestically into hugely destructive combos and attack and defence options fuse perfectly together, enabling you to use the information provided by the brilliantly transparent Intent system to strategise endlessly against hordes of foul monstrosities.
Sure, you’ll eventually see every enemy and chance encounter, and yes, there are a few frame rate niggles here and there, but overall this is one dungeon crawler that will live long in our system memories.
Sonic Mania (Switch eShop)
$7.99 (-60%)
Sonic Mania was a true return for the mascot's 2D 'Classic' guise. It celebrates the glory days of the original games while also enhancing their qualities and taking on new ideas. From new areas, imaginative second acts, and some delightful boss encounters, the development team poured a lot of passion and talent into this retro-styled project.
With new characters and modes added in the 'Plus' retail version (also available as DLC), some neat tweaks iron out some of the kinks present in the original release. Regardless of the version you pick up, Mania is one of the best 2D platformers in recent memory.
Spelunky 2 (Switch eShop)
$7.99 (-60%)
Spelunky 2 is a masterclass in great roguelite game design, expertly combining crushing difficulty with a steady drip of new secrets and lessons to keep you coming back for more. Some may be put off by the steep challenge—this is certainly a game you have to work for a bit—but putting in the effort is sure to reward you with plenty of thrilling memories.
Star Ocean: The Second Story R (Switch)
$32.49 (-35%)
This revival of a PlayStation classic does a thorough job of mixing modern game design and artistic elements with old-school sensibilities to make for one of the most impressive RPG releases of 2023. A lengthy, player-driven story, thrilling combat system, gorgeous new visual style, and remixed soundtrack all come together to make this one of the easiest recommendations we can make to any RPG fan. If you’re even vaguely interested in picking this up, we’d encourage you to do so as soon as you can; Star Ocean: The Second Story R is comfortably the best entry in this series.
SteamWorld Heist: Ultimate Edition (Switch eShop)
$9.99 (-50%)
SteamWorld Heist: Ultimate Edition is a fantastic port of a fantastic game, and it fits perfectly on the Switch. Deep, engaging gameplay and stylish presentation combine to make this one of the standout indie releases of the year; this is a great example of a well-put-together title. If you are at all a fan of strategy games, or are just looking for a fun diversion to occupy your time for a couple of weeks, pick this up. It puts a neat twist on standard turn-based strategy gameplay, and stands as another fantastic entry in the SteamWorld series.
For more in this universe, you can nab SteamWorld Dig 2 on sale for $1.99 (-90%).
Streets of Rage 4 (Switch eShop)
$9.99 (-60%)
Streets of Rage 4 is the very best the series has ever been. Its hand-drawn graphics breathe new life into Wood Oak City and its inhabitants, the soundtrack is outstanding, and the combat feels better than ever. Lizardcube, Guard Crush Games, and Dotemu managed to completely modernise the look and feel of Streets of Rage, expanding on the experience without losing sight of what made the original games so popular to begin with – and the handful of additions made to the action here serve only to enhance the classic core gameplay, resulting in one of the best side-scrolling beat 'em ups we've played in a long time.
And the Mr X Nightmare DLC is pretty tasty, too. A truly fantastic brawler.
Subnautica (Switch eShop)
$14.99 (-50%)
When Unknown Worlds announced they were bringing Subnautica to Switch we were hugely excited, this is one of our all-time favourite games after all, but it was excitement tempered with a degree of scepticism as to how on earth they'd manage to cram the entire experience onto Switch in a properly playable manner.
As it turns out, we needn't have worried as this is a super solid port that — besides a few loading stutters here and there and some scenery pop-in that's present in every other version of the game — successfully delivers one of the very best open-world survival experiences on any platform to Nintendo's hybrid console.
Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury (Switch)
$39.99 (-33%)
Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury takes everything that made the cat-filled Wii U original special and throws in various small gameplay tweaks to make it even more enjoyable. The first four-player 3D Mario game fuses the freedom of the third dimension with the more constrained (yet no less imaginative) courses from his 2D games to wonderful effect.
The cooperative multiplayer element brought Princess Peach, Luigi, and Toad back into the fold, mirroring Super Mario Bros. 2's lineup, and both Cat Mario and Captain Toad were also introduced here. It's the additional open-world-y Bowser's Fury mode that makes this Switch version a must-buy, even if you 100%'d the Wii U original.
The only real mark against the awkwardly acronymed SM3DW+BF is patchy online multiplayer implementation, but this Switch release is otherwise up there with the very best of the plumber's portfolio.
Bowser's Fury is probably the best Mario game for people who have never played a 3D Mario before, serving as an unintimidating introduction to a larger three-dimensional Super Mario world that can also be played with friends and family.
Super Mario Odyssey (Switch)
$39.99 (-33%)
There's an argument to be made that Mario 64 never got a 'true' sequel until this game: Sunshine's FLUDD muddied the waters with its feature set; the Galaxy games eschewed large playgrounds for impeccably crafted planetoids designed around specific ideas; 3D Land and 3D World were deliberately contained with linear design to introduce 2D Mario players to the third dimension.
Super Mario Odyssey promised a return to the 'sandbox' style players had been pining for since 1996, and it delivered. Cappy's capture abilities keep things fresh in a game which blends all sorts of ideas and art styles into an improbably coherent, compelling whole.
It really shouldn't work, but New Donk City's human inhabitants co-exist happily with anthropomorphic cutlery, colourful sombrero-wearing skeletons, and the big-eyed Mushroom Kingdom clan thanks solely to the developers' impeccable execution. The mechanical mastery here is breathtaking, with so many distractions to discover. We don't envy the designers who have to come up with Mario's next game, but Mario Odyssey proves that absolutely anything is possible.
An utterly remarkable entry in this most celebrated of series, then. The best Switch Mario game is an essential purchase whether you like Mario or not.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge (Switch eShop)
$16.24 (-35%)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge is the best Turtles beat 'em up ever made. It looks delicious, sounds superb, and rekindles childhood memories beyond all expectations, time-warping you back to 1987.
Its combat system is so much fun to mine that you feel compelled to keep coming back to try new strategies, and with its awesome co-op multiplayer, the experience evolves again and again. Like many a beat 'em up, it does get repetitive as you enter the last third, but that’s more a fault of the concept than the game. Shredder’s Revenge really is an unprecedented, ahem, shell-ebration.
The Dimension Shellshock DLC adds new fighters and a Survival mode, too, and if you can't get enough of your Turtle-filled co-op brawlers, there's also Digital Eclipse's TMNT: The Cowabunga Collection (also in this sale for $15.99), which features a boatload of Konami classics to keep you busy for hours.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (Switch)
$29.99 (-50%)
The Switch isn’t short of games that have already taken a bow, or several, on other hardware, but Skyrim might be the one that most deserves another look from both hardy Elder Scrolls adventurers and absolute beginners alike. Despite its age showing, with countless little cracks in its already fractured façade, it still delivers a palpable sense of space that few games before or since have managed. May its dancing northern lights never dim.
The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles (Switch)
$15.99 (-60%)
The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles is two brilliant games for the price of one, and it not only gives us more of what we love, but gives us something that is visually, narratively, and historically deeper than ever before.
Taking the Ace Attorney back to the late 19th century, there's a bit of a learning curve that you'll have to get on top of to meet the game where it's at, but honestly, we couldn't have asked for a better version of the game we've been wanting for years.
For more court-based drama, you'll also find Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy on sale for $29.99.

A Short Hike, what a treat. I always recommend it when I see it on lists like this
If you don’t have A Short Hike and Golf Story yet, for less than $10, do yourself a favor and get them both. That’s an insane deal. Both games have “Nintendo feel” to them, despite being indies. There’s a lot of great games in this list (these lists always make me realize just how many games I’ve played on my Switch, and it’s sort of insane), but those two being so cheap is remarkable, really. The value is incredible.
Since my plans to get Marvel vs. Capcom physically just fell to the floor, might as well buy it digital while I find a physical copy.
I almost bought like.... 54 games, this article is not helping my willpower...
dang, there are some heavy hitters on this list! Ive been telling myself to play into the breach for years and its always on sale, maybe ill actually buy it this time (and let it collect dust in the recesses of my backlog LOL)
Still no Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze on sale?? I wanted to grab it this week or Black Friday but nothing. For a port you'd think it would be a no-brainer especially with the new one coming soon.
Pretty sure that's the first time Hellblade has been on sale in years
There are $300+ of discounted Switch games I'm tempted to buy right now, and almost none of them are on this list. Though to be fair, with about a quarter of these entries I'm either holding out for a better deal or own it already. From what is here, I'm thinking about grabbing Death's Door and Hellblade, and aside from Nintendo games, I'd highly recommend ABZU, Monster Hunter GU, and Shovel Knight.
@IceClimbers The last time was in 2019, at least according to Deku Deals. I thought it might just be because Microsoft was trying to promote their own hardware, but Ori's had plenty of sales.
Hmmm how much for all 161
So far I've gotten stitch.
It's not on this list, but it is on a nice sale (about $7.5 USD).
I'm considering Infernax, Balatro, or Ghost Trick. We'll see.
@NinChocolate It's pretty accessible. You'll get used to the gameplay and controls within minutes. It's one of the best games in the series, and it's still getting updates with more content. Highly recommended.
I see a couple I'm going to pick up. I can't say they're all on this list, but some that I've been waiting for a while have decent sales. The first of which is Ninja Gaiden Master Collection, which for the first time ever has gone 40% off. Contra Operation Galuga is 40% off. Trip World DX is 50% off. Abathor is 30% off. Tales of Kazera Zau is 50% off. Llamasoft The Jeff Minter Story and The Making of Karateka are both 40% off. Shinobi Non Grata is 30% off. I'll be putting my gold coins to work as soon as I get paid Friday.
First Christmas since getting my switch i won't be getting any discount Xmas games. Totally dropped the ball on this one, looks like a normal sale on a random Tuesday in March, not christmas sales.
@NinChocolate The demo wasn't bad. A friend and I played it, and... It wasn't bad, I did get some enjoyment out of it (I'm still warming to rogue-likes), but my friend really enjoyed it, so we'll dive in since it's a shared experience.
"However, there's no denying the fact that Secret of Mana is one of the finest console RPGs of all time"
I'm denying it. Secret of Mana is absolute garbage and is the most overrrated JRPG of all time. The developers thought it would be a good idea to give enemies an invincibility window after getting hit, so battling common foes comes down to wacking, waiting, wacking, waiting, wacking, waiting. It's not fun. Charging attacks past Level 2 is pointless. Most of the weapon types are utterly useless and outclassed by better ones with no redeeming qualities. Your AI-controlled companions are idiots that are constantly getting lost or stuck on walls and corners. It's one of those old-school RPGs where you can only restore MP via a limited supply of items, so you spend dungeons doing basic attacks to save items and MP until you get to the boss. And when you get to the boss, the main character becomes useless because he can't use magic. And the strategy for the majority of bosses is just "spam the best spells and use items to recover MP, repeat." The original English translation is boo-boo and a chunk of NPCs speak nonsensical gibberish that don't help move the plot along or direct you on where to go next. The Mode-7 scrolling when riding the dragon is such a pain in the butt to control and land in the right spot on the world map.
The game sucks and deserves to die in a fire. And you know what's funny? It got a remake a few years ago on PS360 that no one remembers or wants to remember because of its Dreamcast-quality graphics and gameplay that fixed few of the aforementioned problems above.
@burninmylight I have the remake on PS4, it’s fine but I think it’s lacking some of the charm of the original.
I went for the DLC for Kingdom: Two Crowns. Pretty sure the game in general is on sale along with the first two games. Also decided to get Animal Well.
@Anachronism Ended up grabbing those two along with Burnout Paradise, Astalon, Axiom Verge 2, The Pathless, Virtua Racing, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, Chasm, Civilization VI, Itorah, and Mario Kart 8's DLC. Of course, I've barely touched any of them because I've been too busy playing and deleting demos to clear enough space in my poor overloaded microSD.
wow sonic mania for 8 bones is a steal. gonna finally buy it, even tho I wanted the physical.
That's like every game bro.
@burninmylight lol tell us how you really feel.
Isn’t it just incredible just on one one sale you can have 150+ 9+ games
Cool, I'll be buying a lot of these for my Steam Deck!
