Yesterday, rumours became true when the Atlus and Arc System Works' 2D fighting game Persona 4 Arena Ultimax was officially announced for the Nintendo Switch and multiple other modern platforms.
Now, in an interesting update, the same leaker who teased this announcement ahead of its official reveal is claiming Persona 3 Portable will be receiving a "multiplatform" remaster. Here's exactly what 'Zippo' had to say in a new post over on their blog:
"Oh, and Persona 3 Portable is getting a remaster. Multiplatform."

While it might all seem a bit sudden, Atlus is currently celebrating the 25th anniversary of Persona. It's also teased that it has seven project reveals planned to celebrate this special occasion.
Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 Portable is an enhanced port of the original PlayStation 2 game, first released on the PlayStation Portable in 2009. It featured various new options - including the ability to play as a female protagonist.
While we wait to see how this latest Persona rumour unfolds, why not check out the latest Atlus announcement from yesterday - confirming it will be bringing Persona 4 Arena Ultimax to the Nintendo Switch next year in March.
Would you like to see Persona 3 Portable make a return? Have you ever played it before? Tell us in the comments.

For all I know it might be another spin off title 😅. I would love to be wrong though!
P3 Dancing, coming to a Switch near you next summer.
Yeah, I'll believe it when I see it. Atlus is absolutely terrible when it comes to giving fans what they want. The next game announcement will be Persona 3 Dancing coming to other platforms.
This would be fantastic. The game, regardless of which version, needs to be on modern platforms. And I’d love to be able to buy a physical copy that doesn’t cost me hundreds of dollars. Loved P3P back when I played it on my Vita and would love to re-play it again in the future on my Switch.
Well if it's called Persona 3 Portable then it must likely had to come to Switch. It's the portable version and Switch is the only portable system right now (unless if you count phones and the Steam Deck coming soon).
It’d better too. I’d love to get into that one, if Altus didn’t stop blindly throwing darts at a wall.
I dunno, it would be pretty rubbish if it was just Portable. There’s no explorable overworld and I’m not a fan of the Visual Novel approach instead. FES with the female route added would be a much, much better package.
Isn't ZIppo the same dude who said the Switch Pro was going to happen, but it never did? He also ended up getting tons of other things wrong too? Also, Persona 3 Portable would be kind of lame honestly, given that it's not even the full game. It's a visual novel, with the only actual gameplay segments being the dungeon crawling stuff.
This is exactly what I want, as long as it retains the 3D exploration from the PS2 game. I haven't played FES yet, and I'm waiting for Atlus to finish this anniversary celebration before I do. I already downloaded P4G on the Vita 3 months before it released on Steam, so I don't want to play P3FES on my PS3 if they're just going to remaster it with better gameplay anyway.
The portable one was the only one I ever tried. Was pretty decent from what I remember, but didn't really hook me on the series.
@nessisonett FES with the female character, and fixed combat would be so much better.
@nessisonett Portable lets you command your teammates, like future Persona games. I'm hoping for a best of both worlds fusion of both FES and Portable's gameplay.
If true, I'll be very interested to try a Persona game for the first time
it would be better if this version combined Portable and The Answer from FES, but remastered so maybe no new features
Ah [beep], here we go again.
I'll believe it when I see it. They had the perfect chance to port over Persona 4 Golden to Switch but instead, we get Persona 4 Arena Ultimax. Atlus sure makes some odd decisions.
Persona 4 Golf, Persona 3 Happy Home Builder and Shin Megami Tensei Presents Persona 4 Kart Racing
Can we just have either P4G or P5R on the Switch? Give me either of those and I’m happy
@KayFiOS Playing FES without bloody Marin Karin overload would be helpful.
This looks neat but knowing Atlus it could just be another spinoff no one cares about.
Rumors don’t cost a thing
It begins.
I've been holding out for a P3 Remaster, though, since all existing versions of it have big drawbacks. It'd be amazing if they can unify the content of P3P and presentation of the PS2 games.
Fes was better than portable by far. I actually just played strikers and 4. Somehow the writing kept getting more anime as the games went on. I mean 3 had a robot and a dog, but the characters felt more believable than in 5. By strikers those guys felt more like middle schoolers than 18-19 year olds.
@Ralizah Yeah let's just hope it's not another spin off game for the Switch. Atlus will most likely port Persona 1-3 and the sequel to Persona 2 on the Switch but not the other 2 for some strange reason.
@Joker1234 low.key, I'd play a real persona warriors game. Strikers gameplay was kinda dope. They leaned too much into damage sponge bosses to the point where playing on easy felt so much better, but it really did translate the persona gameplay to an action game perfectly. Do that but with better writing and p2 through 4 characters and the would be awesome
I would love to play P3 portable on the switch, but it would be better if they could combined the P3 fes and portable versions into one awesome version of the game. Any main persona game would be better then just the spin offs. Also, no cloud versions.
That would be damn awesome. Who said Switch can't have any mainline Persona games? 😅
Like BotW 2 was going to be at TGA 2021, amirite?
@Joker1234 hopefully! I haven't played it yet!
@YorkshireNed Lol
Where is the new Etrian Odyssey?! Patiently waiting Atlus.
I'm fine with that, always wanted to play p3
Use the PS2 3d exploration and add The Answer back in keeping the new female option and they got a winner. I'll take it on PC, RPGs go on the laptop.
Hopefully, this could mean Persona 4 Golden will come to PS4 and Switch. This will be a day one buy for me!
@Juanblue85
I'm willing to be there's some shady, undisclosed platform exclusivity agreement with Sony. Similar case with many SMT games and Nintendo. Either way, Atlus needs to stop.
I'll believe it when I see it.
Wouldn't mind it, but honestly I'd rather Atlus looked at their other, greater gems... Digital Devil Saga maybe...?
Zippo did get Persona 4 Arena Ultimax remaster right and as other said he did get stuff wrong apparently but we will wait and see
Already have Persona 3 Portable on the Vita. But I'm definitely open to playing it on the Switch.
And just recently I thought that even though I don't care about P4 and P5 on Switch, I would probably try out P3.
Pls let it be true. Need a proper way to play this game.
The Portable version is the worst P3 version!!
Atlus and remasters.
I forsee a higher chance of seeing a talking and dancing unicorn than that.
Also this rumor doesn't make any sense, P3P was the worst P3 version gameplay wise, because it had to strip a lot of the gameplay due to PSP being too weak.
@Emmerichcoal: I don't expect any new one with the current Switch.
Multiplatform? So ps5,xbox and pc. Nice.
Yes! Persona games gave terrible female protagonist ratios despite the formative prequel having its variable gender protagonist canpnized as female (SMT If was more than a precursor to Persona 1, as Tamaki is an NPC in both 1 and 2).
Give me Barette Girl back! Her inclusion in Q2 in what amounts to a deuteragonist role was a wonderful gift.
@JokerCK Oof 😁
@Noelemahc How do the Persona Q games stand up against the main games? Are they similar? I've only played Persona 5, Persona 5 Royal and about 10 hours of Persona 3 FES on PS3 until I got stuck, lol
Sounds legit.
Bring it.
This'd be ironic, as I kid you not my little sis literally got it yesterday. Plus they probably should just add the female protagonist to FES or standard.
Any mainline Persona would be appreciated. 3 is a great start and the first true modern one with the best music in the series IMO.
Like others mentioned I’ll believe it when I see it. ‘Til then I’ll keep playing it on my Vita. Hope it comes true though…
@SwitchVogel Better come with the DLC
Not a single one of these turned out to be true, it's time to let go.
Moreover, why remaster the Portable? FES is the obvious choice.
I have this on psp and vita, but my vita needs a new charger. So like the Danganronpa Switch collection I’ll probably re buy games instead of buying one.
I’d like it to be an enhanced version taking the best of both, but I’m not holding by breath for Atlus to put that much into it.
@Joker1234 I don’t think they will release both Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment on Switch. They seem to go through and swap which one they release each time. This time it’s Eternal Punishments turn.
Now we only have one cycle of this so it’s not exactly a pattern but it’s a ridiculously stupid idea and remember Altus are owned by Sega now so it just makes sense.
I’m still holding out hopes for SMT Strange Journeys and both SMT 4 games coming to switch. Decided not to focus on Persona as I just get disappointed.
If that's the case, I really hope it will get a visual upgrade
If it happens I'd guess "multiplatform" means PS4 and PC given Atlus refuses to release mainline Persona on non-Sony consoles. Switch will probably continue to get a SMT focus like remasters of Strange Journey and SMT4.
@VoidofLight He didn't say it was happening, but a lot of other people kept suggesting he did so people just assume it's true. You can see his rumors on his blog, and as of now the only thing really unproven as of now are remakes of Sonic Adventure 1 and 2, which he claims are still in development.
Not sure I could call this an enhanced port, more of a downgrade but with new character content and I think battle improvements. Maybe that is enhanced then? Not sure now that I am typing. If they could work that new content in with the original 3D exploration and FES content then tgat would be great.
@JustMonika not ask8ng me but I stumbled on this anyway. They are a cross between Etrian Odyssey (first person, map creation) and Persona (Persona fusion, characters, battle system). No social links as I recall but there are bonding moments between characters. They have the Persona style and music and are great games overall.
Niiiiiice. We all knew it was coming.
It is a long standing dream for my emo teenage sensibility that I've not ever out grown to play this game. I would love.to start with three because of the aesthetic!
Please be true
@nessisonett exactly what i came here to say. That would be a horrible let down for me.
Calling P3P an enhanced port is a bit misleading. It features several improvements over P3 and P3 FES, but it’s also a downgrade in many ways (missing the Answer content, no overworld, no animated cut scenes, etc.).
I am really curious to see how a remaster of P3P would address these downgrades, if at all (assuming the rumour is true).
@ModdedInkling This is also what I have been thinking. Square was doing this with FFVII onward for a very long time until about two years ago when FFVII was finally announced to be coming to Nintendo and also Xbox. Then VIII, IX, X, X-2, XII, and XV Pocket Edition followed. There has to be some secret deal going on.
Will it have all the content of both versions? Hopefully, because as of now, from everything I've read, there's no definitive version of the game, and a remaster should definitely be able to fix that issue.
@Donutsavant I started with Persona 5 when I was 37, lol .. I hope this rumor is true 😁
@RushDawg Maybe a mix of both FES and P3P?
@JustMonika they are Etrian Odyssey games through and through (hence the Q, it's a stupid pun in the original Japanese), 200% brutal dungeon crawler, but the story is pretty great, even if it rather oddly combines a traditionally dark Persona core plot (I cried my eyes out multiple times during the original Persona Q) with whimsical fanservice in sidequests and incidental events.
TLDR: You played 4 and/or 3 to completion and want more with the characters without ruining the plot of those games, you can play Q.
You played 5 and 3 or 4 to completion and you want more with the characters, you can play Q2. But in both cases, be prepared that there are no Social Links, lots of fanservice and difficult grindy combat is 99% of the gameplay.
it's not happening. by multiplatform they probably mean "excluding switch". or they'll release a spinoff of a game people can't play on the switch and proceed to wonder why it's not selling.
like seriously, it's like atlus is desperately trying to force people to not buy their stuff on switch. Persona 5S, i heard didn't do well on switch and pc because those platforms don't even have P5, the games that ties into p5S directly.
Good grief, how unfortunate, as I just bought this yesterday. This keeps happening.
Screw a straight port of P3P. It took out a lot of the exploration that wasn’t Tararus/relied more on VN format due to PSP limitations among other downgrades.
Use P3 FES as a base while using the P3P QoL like female protag/better battle system. Sure it takes more work, but refuse to buy a P3 game at this point that isn’t the definitive experience.
That is the problem because neither FES or P3P were the definitive experience because they both have their pros and cons
@Juanblue85
At least Square(-Enix) reveals the reasons for exclusivity - with FF7 it was because of hardware. With FF7R and FF7RI, it was because Sony paid extra $$$ for timed exclusivity.
If that was the case with Atlus, they need to freaking speak up about it. Otherwise we have this mess.
This would be the third time this game has been re-released, damn...
@VoidofLight Don't know if you played P3P But it is "the full game". It has all the same social sim mechanics, all the same real-world locations, it has clubs, everything really. Now it's top-down in the overworld and not 3D, and it's missing the anime cutscenes, which does definitely suck, but it's still an enjoyable way to play the game and experience the story.
@JustMonika
That would be ideal.
@Noelemahc I love anime dabonkers so sounds good to me 😁
There are a lot of games that should be on the Switch but aren't so I wouldn't get my hopes up.
I am very excited for this (If it ever happens.) I would play it on my PS2, but I don't really want to sell my kidney
I want FES and Portable to be combined. The new female route is nice, but having the environments is a must in my eyes. Also, fix it so we can social link with party members of the same sex.
While this isn't very likely, I'd buy it if it was, although I'd prefer the FES version - why not combine the two and call it Persona 3 Complete?
Hopefully its true and hopefully P4G gets one as well.
I absolutely love Persona 3. Played for around 100 hours on PSP. And I would do it again. Maybe it means Persona 4 can also get a remaster in the future
Let's go with all Persona games on multiplatforms instead of just P4 and P3, and I definitely do my first ever play of Persona games live on Twitch, never played one yet, so. xD
I loved this on the PSP!
Watch it be multiplatform but the Switch is excluded.
@Browny this is what I want too. Atlus remastered Nocturne, so DDS must be next. It's basically the same engine.
@Harmonie Sadface
@JustMonika Yeah, I dearly hope not and don't think it's very likely to exclude the Switch if it is real, but we all must keep in mind that mainline Persona has never made the jump to a Nintendo system, so this would be a first.
Nah atlus goes best together with not porting a main persona game to switch.
@EpicPieFace the gameplay is pretty much inarguably better considering it's literally just persona 4s battle and skill system. But the visual novel style is a con for some, me included. Everything being menu based is because the psp version was downgraded in many ways compared to the PS2 version. The also cut the answer, which it depends if you liked the answer or not, but I did. That said,it's impossible for them to tack on either game to the other because of the changes. It's better to just consider them different games. Fes has a better presentation, p3p is the better game.
At ths point it's getting more ridiculous than Switch Pro rumors.
@DiamondJim Some would say P3 is better than those
@SwitchVogel Please not another dancing game.
Well I played the original on PS2 but never finished it, so I hope this is true.
