Square Enix has been remastering a lot of its older RPGs in recent years, and if a new online listing is anything to go by, it seems the Final Fantasy Tactics series could also be making a return.
This is according to an archived page over on the online store Instant Gaming. The remaster will apparently be released on the Epic Games platform and has a placeholder of 2023. The date has been narrowed down to 1st February 2022 - a date retrieved from a GitHub page of Nvidia GeForce leaks, shared by SteamDB creator Pavel Djundik.

Additionally, on the Final Fantasy Tactics subreddit, a user claims they recently received a "playtest" survey invitation from Eidos-Montreal, asking them if they played FFT and certain other tactical RPGs:
"I just received an Eidos-Montreal playtest invitation (which also playtests Square Enix games in general), and everything seems to indicate they're playtesting a tactical. They were asking if I played Fire Emblem, FF Tactics, Ogre Battle, Disgaea, Into the Breach, etc. At first, I thought this was about Triangle Strategy, but while they didn't ask if I played Octopath, they did ask if I played FF12 and it's DS sequel... the only non-tactical FF games that take place in Ivalice. They also asked if I played FF Tactics PS1 AND if I played the iOS/Android version, which seemed weird, they never ask about multiple versions of the same game."
As you might recall - back in September, there was a huge Nvidia GeForce database leak for PC. Nvidia at the time said the games featured were "speculative titles". And yep, a Final Fantasy Tactics Remaster was on the list, alongside a bunch of other Square Enix titles.
Of course, there's no mention of a Nintendo Switch release here, but Square Enix seems to be porting most of these classic RPGs to the hybrid system - so if the above listing is legitimate, there's a good chance it'll be released on Nintendo's hardware. You can check out the supposed Nvidia GeForce database leak in our previous post:

A masterpiece, and one of my favorite games. Though I still prefer the direct, if sometimes wonky (and occasionally wrong) original localization to the overly flowery prose of the War of the Lions version.
Fingers crossed. Tactics was one of the best games on GBA
Yeah but, I'm hoping for them to remake it with the HD2D treatment, and they're still occupied with DQIII at the moment. Fingers crossed it isn't just a port dump.
I hope it gets the Octopath/triangle strategy treatment, it'd fit perfectly.
no complaints here
How’s the one on DS? Worth looking into?
I’m that one person who prefers Advance but hey, I’d definitely take a remaster of the first one!
I will be picking this up day one if it’s real. I was more hoping for a collection like they did with Mana and Saga with Advance and Advance 2 in there but that was always a long shot
This game was fun, but no challenge whatsoever. I like the setting and playing with FF characters, but if they're remaking it I hope they can bump the challenge up to something like Fire Emblem levels. You should not be able to play through an entire tactical RPG without losing a battle - and no, this isn't me humblebragging, I don't think I'm some kind of tactical genius, it was just not challenging enough.
I've heard Instant Gaming is a very unreliable source that makes listings for any rumored game, so I don't personally trust this as a sign of anything to come. That being said, the Nvidia leak's been pretty spot-on, so I do think this is coming soon.
@Bl4ckb100d That would be a full remake, while the title here says it's only a remaster. It'll probably just be like Square's other recent remasters (Legend of Mana might be a good example). Polish the visuals, maybe redo the music, fix a few things and add some QoL features, but it'll mostly just be the same game.
Watch as they make this a cloud version on Switch, lol.
@JasmineDragon
Sorry, still humblebragging; the game (at least the PlayStation original) was notoriously challenging, at least in certain points. Though any FF game, Tactics included, had difficulty linked to grinding; grind enough and it's easy.
@JasmineDragon
Did you play the original Final Fantasy Tactics on PS1? It is VERY challenging, at least in the early game.
YES! Let's go! One of my favorites.
Yes I want the entire Final Fantasy Tactics series remastered for Switch, heck while they're at it bring back Ogre Battle, Tactics Ogre, and Ogre Battle 64 as well and maybe a remastered of Vagrant Story too.
Oh, please, please !! 😃
I wanna play FF Tactics again.
@JasmineDragon Did you play the original or WotL? The original is notorious for being difficult for a reason, if you don’t prepare for that Belias fight then you’re screwed.
@JasmineDragon
Math Skill + Faith + Holy + Holy eater armor (for ally) = 999 damage combo !
@NinChocolate I remember feeling like it was worse than Advance
Well, this game certainly left its mark in gaming history. It was a huge hit even in my limited social circle in school, and I say that because most of my friends hated JRPGs. I welcome a remaster, hopefully for Switch, and hopefully with some QOL improvements.
NINJA APPROVED (because this game HAS ninjas, cmon!)
@Aerona oh really? Dang..
I feel like this would compete with Triangle Strategy if released on Feb 1 2022. I'd definitely buy this instead.
Also, glad to see Ogre Battle get a mention!
@nessisonett Surprisingly I agree! Haven't played FFTA, but I enjoyed FFTA2 a lot more than FFT.
@Specter_of-the_OLED YES PLEEESE!!! Ogre Battle's death does not get mourned often enough. It needs to come back!
"Final Fantasy Tactics Remaster" but they super imposed the logo of the game on artwork from Tactics Advance.
Not exactly inspiring confidence there.
Also, why are we "remastering" this when War of the Lions already exists and is pretty much superior to the original PS1 release in nearly every conceivable way?
I am confused.
Probably just gonna be another mobile game.
"...but Square Enix seems to be porting most of these classic RPGs to the hybrid system...."
[Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster I-VI have all entered the chat]
This will be amazing! Seeing as Act Raiser was also released on Android I hope the same for this!
@Anti-Matter @nessisonett @RushDawg @whitemage Maybe I need to retract my judgement - I played FF Tactics Advance, not the PS1 game. I was always under the impression that it was pretty much the same game. Totally possible I'm wrong about that. Was the PS1 game much harder? If it was, and this is a remake of that game and not Advance, then I'm very interested.
@whitemage I don't really do humblebragging, honestly. I know what I'm good at and don't mind saying so, although I do try not to blow my own horn too obnoxiously!
I'm good at tactical games, but I'm no mastermind. FE games and XCOM kick my butt plenty, as do human opponents in chess. This game (Advance) was not hard AT ALL. But like I said above, it's quite possible I am mistaken and the original game was harder than Advance.
I wouldn't mind this being remade...but I also want to see a port of FFTA and A2. These games deserve to be mentioned as well even if they aren't as renown as the original game.
@JasmineDragon Ahh I see, then I retract my own, my apologies! FFT is a completely different game from FFTA. To be honest I haven't played enough of Advance so I can't compare, but I can say Tactics' difficulty can range from satisfying to almost (but not quite) unfair, depending on the fight. with difficulty going down if you spend time leveling, as you'd expect. There's one hilarious fight in which it is quite possible to lose before you've gotten a single turn (though I wouldn't call that difficult so much as a design goof). I don't have enough experience with the remakes done so far on the game (aka War of the Lions), so I dunno if they toned it down or whatnot. It has a much darker, more nuanced and provocative story, than FFTA's narnia-esque route. I'm a huge Fire emblem fan as well, FFT has a number of differences in approach but I hope it comes out and I hope you get to play it for the first time and enjoy it as much as I did.
@JasmineDragon
I remember getting stomped in the game especially later when they introduced gunners.
Edit: oh you only played advance. Yeah the original is much harder.
@JasmineDragon Advance is a totally different game and personally my favourite in the series. The original is a lot harder!
I'm already excited how SE will mess it up... smooth filter lets go
Just don't nerf the "Yell" ability. I don't know how I'd win a certain fight without it. Finally beat the PS1 original in 2020, I'd give a remaster a spin as well.
I have no confidence in Square Enix remastering anything. Why can't they just release the original games? Are no-one buying the games Namco, Capcom and Konami etc. are re-releasing?
FF Tactics A2 is one of my favourites. Hopefully that’ll follow.
Well this is great news. But it's still a little way off.
This has been rumoured so many times , surely it’s only a matter of time we get This ! If it’s true I really want some sort of deluxe physical edition ! It’s one of my favourite RPGs ever , take my money now !!!!!
I've played through FFT more times than any other game besides Diablo 2, so I'll be passing on another easy cash grab remaster, that for whatever reason, people throw money at like crazy. And I WONDER why all we've been getting is remasters/remakes lately...hhhmmmmm...
If its gonna be another epic exclusive then I'm gonna scream.
In other news FF Tactics is one of the greatest games ever made.
@whitemage Well put. Though I would make the distinction that the original wasn't so much localized as simply translated.
I personally prederred the flowery prose and wish more RPGs took more time fitting the scripts to our Western perception of medieval-esque times.
@UglyCasanova People, like me, who throw money at it like crazy haven't, despite their love, played this game more times than they can count and wish to revisit it.
@Specter_of-the_OLED Would be fantastic if Ogre Battle 64 went that way instead of being part of NSO Expansion Pack.
i want it and also FF12 Revenant Wings
@JasmineDragon Way different games. Comparable only in gameplay. Storywise, completely different.
FFTA is more akin to Harry Potter, FFT is more Game of Thrones.
I wish they could release them all as a trilogy, emulation done by M2. I'd pay full price without thinking too much..
@Daniel36 Well, I hope this happens, since I actually really liked FFTA aside from its lack of difficulty. SRPGs are one of my favorite genres, and I can never get enough of them.
Oh heck poopie yeah! Love both these games! Looking forward to the future! Diddly diddly!
I would be sooooo happy, I have played this game more times then I can count and I currently own it on everything platform it's been released on. That said I have not played it in probably 5+ years now.
I would buy this day one. I do hope it would come to Switch but if not I will just get it on PC.
@JasmineDragon Well, you'd be in for a treat then. FFT is without a doubt the best SRPG, at least in terms of story. Hopefully it will be the War of the Lions edition. The added animation is amazing.
No mention of the original remake/remaster of Tactics, Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions for PSP? If they remastered the original and not the PSP game I'd be surprised.
I really do want to play this. But also this kills my hype for Triangle Strategy
@Specter_of-the_OLED
Ogre Battle 64 was pretty epic indeed.
One of my fav GBA games. Please, yes please
Never played the original game, but Advance was amazing. People do seem to love the og, though.
Or just port it with some visual tweaks.
I won't complain.
I don't want to get my hopes up, but I want a faithful remaster of this game so badly.
@Daniel36 totally valid. I will readily admit my preference is likely colored by the the circumstances around when I first played the game as a kid.
As long as it's Physical cart then I am willing to buy it.
@whitemage I can imagine. English not being my native language, the original script didn't bother me at age around 19 I guess, but I greatly appreciated the effort they took with the PSP version. Only other game I felt had a great locakization was FF XII.
It's always held in such high regard, and people always talk about the story being great.
I believe a remaster is due, I'm really curious! 😁
Holy moly, a Tactics collection with FFT, FFTA and FFTA2 would be about the fastest preorder I've ever made.
Both FFT and FFTA were beauts and I'd love to finally sit down and give A2 the play through it deserves.
If they make it in the 2.5 HD Engine I can die happy.
@nessisonett I want to say I was 13 when I played the original, same year it came out. Belias made me quit, and it wasn't until I came back maybe four or five years later and started from the beginning that I was able to beat him. It also didn't help that two of my main guys got permadeathed before the Belias fight, so I am inclined to agree with you.
@Tyranexx
it was released after FFVII so there could be a chance of seeing it happen.
its mainly the original 6 games which have been allergic to consoles/dedicated handhelds for the past 10 or so years.
@whitemage
The solo battle between Ramza and Wiegraf is annoyingly difficult. It’s much harder than the second phase against his Daemon form with the rest of the team.
Matter of fact, a trick for people who haven’t played it. Make a back up save before you get to that mission. If you save going into the battle and your Ramza isn’t strong enough, Wiegraf will body you and you’ll have to restart the entire game from scratch. Because if you can’t beat him the first time you won’t beat him the second time. RNG isn’t the issue, it’s just that Wiegraf has annoyingly powerful attacks that can one shot an under equipped and under leveled Ramza.
@nessisonett I had to restart my entire save twice because of that battle! Third time I was ready.
@Mgalens We can hope! I won't pretend I was very confused that SE wasn't releasing the Pixel Remasters on modern consoles. PC makes sense, but (at the time of writing) to skip other dedicated platforms but still churn out mobile releases? Eh....
@TheRedComet backing up on my last comment... it wasn't Belias that made me quit. It was Wiegraf!!! Excuse me, it's been years. My God how I hated that guy.
Can they please finally bring it to Switch?
The game has had multiple sequels on Nintendo handhelds but only ever released on PlayStation and its derivatives…
Wake me up when it's a remaster for Ogre Tactics: Let Us Cling Together lol
Seriously though I hope they are remastering War of the Lions and not just OG FF Tactics. War of the Lions had some great additions that too few people experienced
@Link2284
He was definitely the game’s biggest pain in the ass.
I had to restart the first time I fought him. I learned after that that auto-potion is your best friend in that game.
Honestly, Tactics is weird by FF standards. Magic is mostly useless, since the charge times of higher spells precludes their use in most engagements. Magic usually dominates most final fantasies.
My builds on my runs (assuming I was doing a no special character run) was to give all my members dual wield from Ninja and then change them to knights. Dual wielding the late game knight swords will one shot just about every enemy you encounter in chapter 4.
The PS version was pure poetry. If they can port this to Switch, I think I will be ok with not receiving Super Mario RPG (a little while longer)
Would definitely pick this up on the Switch! Amazing game but I never finished it back in the day.
@JasmineDragon having played all the T's in the series, yes, FFTA and FFTA2 were easily stomped throughout the game. FFT was far more complex, even though it was a predecessor of the DS versions, and the difficulty scale is much higher. I would recommend anyone to play FFT over the A series any day.
