Next month is a busy period for Square Enix, with not one but two remakes coming out.
This has got many fans of the company wondering what else could be remade in the future. While Square Enix hasn't said anything official itself, during a recent interview with Game Reactor, veteran producer Yoshinori Kitase – who has just wrapped up work on the Final Fantasy VII: Remake – was asked what game he would like remake next. Here's what he had to say:
Ok, so first of all, you have to promise you're not going to write an article saying Square Enix is remaking Final Fantasy something, something... It's just a purely personal opinion, just so you understand that. With that caveat in place, the first Final Fantasy that I worked on myself was Final Fantasy V, that hasn't been remade with the more realistic kind of approach yet, so I think it might be quite interesting to do a FF5 remake someday.
The medieval-fantasy role-playing game Final Fantasy V was first released by Square on the Super Famicom in 1992. Kitase was credited as a writer. The game was eventually localised and later on, in 2006, it got ported across to the Game Boy Advance as Final Fantasy V Advance.

This needs to be done
If it's done with all the realistic graphics, then we'll know Faris is a woman right from the start!
Gasp!
Please remake FF V at least looks like FF IV 3D Remake on NDS / IOS ! 😃
Radical idea here...I'm not the biggest fan of any of the art in any of the remakes of 4,5, or 6 so far...do them in the style of Octopath Traveler!!!
He said this in a video interview the other day. It was clearly meant purely hypothetically though. Not as any kind of serious intent of Square as a company.
Remake both FFV and FFVI!!!!
While I'm at it, give us Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross (and a proper sequel)!
I'll take 6, 4 and 5 remakes in that order
5 job system was great, but the story does not compare to 6 or 4.
I feel like Bravely Default is a better game than 5, although the last few chapters were a bit... repetitive
@Severian
I'm down for FF6 and Chrono again!
I wouldn't say no to Super Mario RPG either 😉
Sounds great but Square is a shell of its former self. The last really good game they made was arguably Final Fantasy X and that was many years ago.
@jamesthemagi
So long as it's not a port of the iOS garbage that ruined the sprites, the portraits, and font!
I would be in favor of this as long as it's done right. Don't want them to go the iOS garbage route. Give us a proper remake!
@arekdougy I think Square cornered themselves going all out with VIIR, if they ever remake any of the other games and don't put nearly the same budget or effort fans will see it as a lesser product
I feel like, 2, 3, and 5 are the very forgotten about ones, so, doing more with them is a good thing in my book. Echoing @arekdougy, I'd quite like to see the first six redone in the Octopath Traveler aesthetic.
But you know what might look /really/ good with the Octopath treatment?
Final Fantasy Tactics.
Do it!!! The job system and the music (Battle at the Big Bridge, the final fight with Ex-Death, etc) are both freaking amazing.
If he starts now it will be ready for the PS6 =) lol
I haven't played V but I often see it on sale for the Vita. I should check it out.
Definitely will be getting this if it ever got the remake treatment, same thing for Final Fantasy VI.
All FF needs redo and redo for Switch 65gb carts.
I don’t know for sure, it isnt FF6 the most popular 2D one?
If they do it they should call it FF5 ReButz.
I just recently paid for Chrono Trigger for iOS and have been playing it on my AppleTV 4K. The controls aren’t as good as the SNES and the text boxes feel super out of place since they’re this weird marble texture that doesn’t look anything like the original game. But it’s still a lot of fun to replay. I feel like if they were willing to invest in it then Chrono Trigger could be a fantastic remake. But I don’t know if Square Enix really wants to invest in their old SNES games. The mobile port of FF6 looks like a mutilated fetus covered in wasabi.
I feel like Chrono Trigger could even make a cool Netflix series. The story is so goofy + fantastic.
I think Chrono Trigger and the Other SNES RPGs could probably really benefit from being redone in the same style as Octopath. I’d just hate to see them redo any of them as badly as they did Secret of Mana.
I'm be down with that as long as they didn't remove any of the original's features.
Yes!! But forget the cinematic approach of FF7R, forget it, it costs a lot of money. Just give a us FFV in modern 3D graphics and that's enough!
I feel shameful as I have never touched a final fantasy game prior to ff7. Heard only positive things about them. Especially 4 and 6. Would be nice to see what the fuss is about!
Give us FF VI as well🤞
@Benjoo I recommend 5, personally. If you made it through 9, odds are you'll do fine with 6. I quit both because they bored me at the beginning of their third acts. 1-4 are just old school slogs.
Yes please! That one's my favorite. Just, and I should not need to tell you this, please actually keep it as a RPG and don't try to turn it into some grummy action game.
In the age of countless franchise backlogs, I wouldn't replay most of the older FF flagships (heck, XIII trilogy is the only one I've been replaying with a straight face - and enjoying it even more), but V, VI and IX are certainly the cases where a remake could seal the deal. Mainly to hear the cast fully voiced - AFAIK that even used to be the plan for IX from the start but never came to fruition, - but potential extra content, more detailed environments to explore and battles possibly influenced by Paradigm Shift again (even though I'm still not sold on VII remake, what I hear about its battle system is a sweet precedent) would be just as welcome.
Time will tell - I'm not gonna get hyped for creators' wishful thinking alone, but that's also a factor. And generally, if I've lived to see Square Enix revisit Star Ocean and Mana franchises...
@KimBread don't underestimate the Bifauxnen trope.
I love how he started with “this is a personal opinion not something we are doing”. He knows game journalists too well.
I wish they would. I wasn’t the biggest fan of the terribly named Bartz vs ExDeath. The job system was fun but it wasn’t as good as 4 or 6.
As it was I think back in April 2010, it was reported that SE planned on remaking V and VI for the DS much like III and IV, but ran into technical difficulties. They commented that they'd look into the 3DS to continue the remakes, but I think because the 3DS didn't sell too well initially, they canned the projects and went mobile with those games.
Just release a translated version of the original without iPhone graphics.
I’d love a remastered FFVI personally!
Honestly, so long as it actually releases on a Nintendo platform, I don't really care what style they put it out in.. so long as it's not the mobile variant. Sony is getting their once Playstation exclusive FFVII remake, so I think it's fair for Nintendo to get one that was once exclusive to their platform as well.
...or bring a FFIX remake to Nintendo. That one was a throwback to classic Final Fantasy which were mainly on Nintendo platforms so it would make sense still. (Yes I know this is incredibly unlikely to happen but hey, a guy can dream right?)
I'd love a Final Fantasy Tactics 2
FFS
It’s still the only main series game I haven’t played so I’d love to play a 3D remake like 3 and 4.
The remaster was horrible.. those ugly sprites.. I mean they had one job to do. Just reusing the old sprites in higher setting, but instead they gave some new look that totally didn't capture the old school FFV. It was a huge letdown and I don't care if all stuff from other N hardware is included in that "remaster" version. I still didn't get quality. It was like some noobs made some draws.. who even approves such horrible graphics i'm wondering
YES YES YES! V is my absolute FAVORITE of the nes/snes era. I'd LOVE to see an updated version out there...
Just release 4, 5 and 6 on one cart as a collection. I don’t want any buttons where you are instantly lvl 99, fast forward modes etc. Just give me a classic collection square.
Remake FF6 with the octopath traveler engine
No reason to remake it... The job system is seen in all sorts of RPGs and there was nothing special or memorable about 5s story other than Gilgamesh.
Gotta agree with a lot of people here that it should be updated Octopath Traveler style graphics. Given it the same treatment they gave IV or the mobile version of VI would just rub people the wrong way.
I would love this SOOO SOOO much. Although I can't see them remaking 5 before 6.
Honestly, I would love to see a Final Fantasy VI remake in the same style as the Final Fantasy VII remake. VII is good, but I’ve never understood how people put it above VI.
I want to see V and VI remade in the style of Octopath Traveler.
Honestly, anything that isn't the mobile/steam 'remasters' would be welcomed.
I hope this happens
FF5 done the same way as FF4 on the vita, no 3d crap, it looks awful. That or remake it like the secret of mana remake with the world layout from the snes version as the world map in the corner. Tokyo RPG factories graphics are a taste to be acquired and I'm not one who likes the look of them.
@BanjoPickles It's a case of being baby's first RPG (somewhat like Pokémon in that sense), it came out at the right time with Sony spending big money on advertising so a lot of people feel very nostalgic about it, which is also why VIII is seen as the black sheep among the PS1 FF's. As someone who didn't play it till much later I feel it's pretty good but far from being even the best RPG on that console, not when Suikoden 2 and Xenogears released shortly after
@Robzilla Where have you been?
Octopath
DragonQuest Builders
FF14 ARR
Oninki
Life is strange
NierAutomata
I am Setsuna.
The 7 remake demo is absolutely epic in every way.
I still want FFVI made over in the FFVII style. Still my favorite. And I wouldn't mind FFIV, my other favorite.
V and VI would be great along with the FFT Advance games and Chrono Cross.
I'd say bravely default comes close enough!
I haven't played a lot of ff8, but everyone says the battle engine is absolutely awfull. A remake works definitely help with that!
This is such an under rated game. It's my personal favorite in the series. They should just re-release the GBA version on Switch and I would be very happy with that.
i would like much more a remake of Final Fantasy IX(my favorite) but the V have a good story and a really good villain(Exdeath is one of my favorites) so i think that a remake of him will be pretty good too.
This and VI need to be done justice after the travesty of those mobile versions.
@BanjoPickles People put it above VI because it was more popular basically.
It was the big new 3D game on Sony's new console that introduced the mainstream to JRPGs for the first time.
My favorite FF alongside VIII. FFV NEEDS this remake ♡♡♡ they need to keep the new jobs as well as the new super boss ♡♡♡
Give it to me! So far I've loved every FF I've played.
It will get a remake that the nostalgic crowd would love to have happen and then more than half of that crowd would hate it when it releases because it isn't like the original and "lacks the charm". Good or not. Every. Single. Dang. Remake.
I think they should remake 4,5, and 6 like Dragon Quest 11. They could include the 2D mode which would give the game a little replay value. Dragon Quest 11 showed there is still a market for JRPGs. I understand 4 has been remade already but its one of my favorites and I would love an excuse to buy it again.
Yeah I'm game as long as its exclusive and doesn't wind up on the PS4 as well.
If their remaking 7 and keeping that as a ps4 exclusive then they could do the same here considering this started out on the Snes in the same way 7 started on the Playstation.
If they keep 7 as ps4 exclusive but make this multiplatform then they can just Swivel on the idea.
@Kr96
Oh man, I would love to see another Suikoden! Don’t get me wrong, I love Final Fantasy VII, but it’s probably my third favorite, behind VI and IX.
@Alucard83 I think it’s more that the base standard of quality for mobile games art is not very high, to say the least
@BanjoPickles It’s my second favorite, behind VI and IV
@garfreek It wasn’t a problem with the battle engine, it was that you had to steal magic from enemies in order to use it. Ok that’s a part of the battle mechanics anyways
@Antraxx777 and then it punished you for using the magic, and you could make cards and you had to junction. Not to mention everything leveling up with you so the more leveling you did, the harder the bosses became.. I may watch too many analysis vids of a game before I play xD
A Modern rendition of this game sounds amazing, with it having a chance to clean up the scratches. I hope the main theme sounds like the Distant Worlds version. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEiFm-l2J0M&list=
