PEGI Rating Suggests DOOM 64 Is Making A Comeback

My wish has come true, thank you Panic Button, ZeniMax, id Software, Midway, Bethesda, and Nintendo.

I feel like every DOOM is important to the timeline in a way, but I definitely got more out of Turok and GoldenEye on 64.

This is great if it comes to fruition, but why does it say the release date was yesterday when it obviously was not?

I absolutely love this game. That said, I've been playing it at high resolution with mouse and keyboard on PC and I'm not sure I can go back. That said, if this has dual stick control I will pick it up anyway as, like I said, I love this game.

Hopefully this one won't force us to have a Bethesda account too

Now the question is - How will Bethesda choose to screw this one up?

I liked how 64 was more creepy and was less action focus. The music and sound was amazing too. It felt like more of a sequel than Doom 2.

Having this game with dual analog stick control would be fantastic.

@vio Still I give them credit for making it happen on the N64. Without them the game probably may not get to fruition. Midway alongside Rare, THQ, and Acclaim were some of the few western developers that strongly supported the N64 at the time.

please make it so, I absolutely loved this on N64, completely re-drawn sprites and fantastic lighting effects, it is lacking any music sadly but I thought it made it much scarier and tense 😬

I will support this if they fix the gamma I remember playing the game and barely being able to see enemies the screen was so dark. Hopefully this happens sooner than later! And don't you dare include the login garbage...

@Deanster101 It's not lacking any music at all. It had the best Doom soundtrack there is, same as PS1 soundtrack by Aubrey Hodges. Turned it into a horror game

@commentlife Same here. Turok in 1996 were insane.
Hard to think that the popular Duke 3D on PC came out same year with inferior game engine.

Now we just need DOOMs 5 to 63 and we will have them all! Just played through the first episode of DOOM and loved it. I'd love to see Quake and Duke Nukem on Switch, completing the unholy trinity of mid 90s FPS classics.

Doom 2016 was bloody amazing. Got Doom 3 today as a result of how much I enjoyed the reboot. Don't think I will enjoy the original or part 2.

Can't wait for Eternal. But gonna get that for Xbox One. Want the smoothest and best frame rate possible for the game.

Doom 64 is a classic, really decent eerie music and plenty of levels. When I got this on the N64 back in the day I was surprised with just how good it was....

DOOM 64 is the only one I've played. I just assumed it was a port of the first game. Now I want to play it again. Would like to play Quake again too.

What’s so special about DOOM 64? I game I’ve heard of but never experienced. DOOM was not my thing in general, until it came to Switch. I did have & loved Quake on Saturn!

Really great if we get Doom64. Even better if we get Duke Nukem 64 and Turok 2 and 3. All great classics.

This Doom game has the kind of atmosphere and vibe I wish the new games had. It plays and looks like classic Doom (albeit with much improved enemy sprites) but is quite tense and almost horror-ish like Doom 3 in terms of the tone, which is the best combination of the two imo. I think similarly of PlayStation Doom too, which really nails the perfect balance imo.

Give me the four Quakes next, please.

@YagaMaki Going to need a PC for the best smoothest frames but I'm with you on the One X being my 3rd party platform of choice these days. For my old eyes and reaction times its every bit as good as the high end PC my teenager plays on.

Always loved Doom 64, it was so much more atmospheric and holds up a lot better than early 3d of Turok. It was poorly rated at the time because it wasn't 3D (which was all the rage in the mid/late 90's), however Doom 64EX shows how well it was made and in many opinion is the real Doom 3. Hopefully they will tidy it up a bit by turning the anti-aliasing off, and the brightness up 50%

Would be even better if they allowed the brutal DOOM mod. Brutal Doom 64 is terrifying and gory as hell

A lot of people like it, but I dunno.. All the flash muzzles and particle effects everywhere ect. just kinda ruined the original "feel" of the game for me

So true. I don't understand the reasoning behind this. For a 20 year old port to a console that is also used as a handheld it makes even less sense.

@Upaluppa Nope, local splitscreen but no online features from what I can tell

I didn't pick up Doom 3 but apparently with that one, you can just skip the login stuff and continue to play, where as with Doom 1/2 it won't let you play until you've logged in at least once

Someone else in another article is trying to defend this practise right now, and trying to justify it to me.. Nothing anyone ever says will justify it to me though, the source code for this game has been public for many years and the games shouldn't use such anti-consumer DRM

I don't even like DRM in my modern games but at least it kinda makes more sense in those games, in games as old as this and readily available DRM-free everywhere else.. this is just unacceptable.

Doom 64 is one of the most underappreciated games on the N64, a true classic.

I want some classic tournament style Doom multiplayer but I fear the Switch audience won't embrace it and it will die soon after launch with no cross play

@FarkyValentine Thats correct. It's called Quake Champions. But i think a updated Quake III Arena would be better than a watered down Champions. Arena could run at 1080p 60fps. With upgraded textures and lighting.

Really underrated Doom game! I think the fact that this was essentially an N64 exclusive went under the radar at the time, as it is unique from all other versions.

@impurekind And this is why I personally prefer Doom 3 over the new / modern titles. There's just something "off" about them. Maybe too much lighting and 'Serious Sam' vibes. Those games are great in their own right — but they just aren't for me.

Or switch can just have virtual console.

The Unmaker in this game is probably the most underrated weapon in gaming. It is about B.F.G. tier in terms of fun.

@hadrian I know, that's what I love about the game. The back of the box touts CD quality sound and it does have that 90's CD game kind of sound to it, it's tense and definitely sets the mood. Oh and the intro is pretty cool too

Yes please! So many memories of using a cheat code to enable co-op on this game with my brother! Switch is getting some Doom love lately and I love it.

Sorry but Bethesda is pushing it too far. They're now on the same list as are Activision and EA.

I sincerely hope the developers add split-screen multiplayer/co-op/deathmatch support to the game. Doom64 is based on a modified version of the original Doom engine (id Tech 1), and that feature has been successfully implemented by various source ports, such as Doom Legacy, so there's really no reason not to implement it and it would greatly increase the appeal/sales of the game.

Unfortunately I never got to play more than a few levels of this game, on rental, because something about its movement made me absolutely nauseous. I am hoping a smaller screen might finally allow me to play. So I’m tentatively excited.

@Doktor-Mandrake I was trying to play Doom at a restaurant, signed into their Wifi, but the servers down meant the message constantly popped up after failing to connect. It said ‘ some features will be unavailable offline, but I wasn’t trying to play online. Just ridiculous oversight. But at least they’re going to remove it.

@LuciferOnReddit I still play the original Super Mario Bros. regularly, despite the Allstars 16-bit version existing. Part of it is nostalgia, but part of it is taking pride in the fact those games still hold up so well. Doom in particular was a highly sophisticated game for its time (no other game at the time had its complex feature list of lighting, flag events and texture shader), and realtime lighting and 3D objects doesn’t change those facts. These titles, as is, are still remarkable achievements for our beloved industry.

I still have my boxed original Doom 64. The different maps are worth playing for sure and the sound was/is absolutely phenomenal.

Is this a trade off?
PC and PS4 got an official DOOM 64 port for the first time ever and Nintendo got an official DOOM 3 port for the first time ever (along with what seem to be the best Nintendo versions of DOOM 1&2 to date).

Just get the PC port. Game probably can look better on there too.

Having all these Doom games being released on modern consoles is great news! I've never been a PC gamer outside of The Sims, Black & White, and Duke Nukem 3D, so I've never played a Doom game. I did have an N64, but never had Doom for that, either.

That's not to say that I don't like FPS games, though. I loved Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, and Turok 1 & 2. Quake III Arena and Unreal Tournament are still some of my favorite DC games. I also really liked Metroid Prime and can't wait for Metroid Prime 4! I even had the Goldeneye remake and CoD: MW3 both on Wii and when I get my Wii U working again, I might be back to playing CoD: Ghosts.

All that said, I do have a question about the Doom 3 rerelease for Switch, PS4, and XB1. Is it just the original Doom 3, or is it actually Doom 3: BFG Edition?

Doom 64 is excellent, especially the atmosphere and sound track. Amazing scary ambient track. Please bring to Switch! This is hectic Doom play with a very scary dark ambiance. So much beter lighting than og Doom & Doom II.

I play this often on N64 with my brawler controller. I think it would feel great with dual analog.

The soundtrack really was something special for this game. Very eerie when playing in dark with headphones attached to the tv set... Really hope this is true that its making a return to the Switch!!
