Earlier this year during a Direct presentation, Nintendo revealed it was bringing Super Mario Maker 2 to the Switch this June.
In the latest update, a release date has now been locked in. According to Nintendo of America and Nintendo Japan, the game will be arriving on 28th June. This date may be slightly different, depending on where you live.
This latest entry promises to let your imagination run wild as you make and play on your own Super Mario courses using brand new tools, items and features. One of the major selling points of the sequel is the ability to create slopes for the first time. There'll also be underwater options and assets from the recent 3D games - Super Mario 3D Land and Super Mario 3D World.
Are you excited about Super Mario Maker 2 for the Switch? Will you be purchasing it in the month of June? Tell us below.

I miss the Directs...
E3 this year is going to be amazing...
Man, I can’t wait to recreate/perfect my past levels! I created a nightclub level that I was so proud of, but I lost it when I sold my Wii U!
So pumped for this. Glad it's toward the end of june,so I can chip away at my backlog before it comes out
I'm scared of the new levels already
@MattFox I know! I'd rather have the info given that way. Oh well...
My wallet is going to be crying this summer! The Switch has an awesome line-up of games coming and this just made it that much better.
Bring it on! ................................ Watches my brother make stages all day ............. I make a stage ............... Brother says it sucks and that all my stages sucks and is not creative .........
This is the Switch game I'm most excited for this year. Can't wait!
Ok really? So, I am not going to have any money at all in 2019? Really Nintendo you not even gonna let me recover from 2018?
Ok Day 1...
@IceEarthGuard Your brother sounds mean.
@MattFox Like you’re saying they should have a direct just to announce the release date? Because that would be one short direct.
Can't wait to get it. Day 1 indeed.
Already pre-ordered. Hope there is a way to avoid or skip autoplay levels, tho.
@BAN If you've noticed, the last two weeks we've been getting tons of various info on games that would otherwise belong in a direct. Smash Bros 3.0 stuff, Super Mario Maker release date, Starlink content, Travis DLC, along with several launch trailers for smaller games. You can see just from their Youtube channel how much stuff has been coming through the pipes (no pun intended) lately. It really is enough to justify a direct. The question of course is...why haven't they?
I guess we can chalk it up to a combination of the adjustments in leadership at NoA and the fact that they may just not have any big announcements right now to round off a direct. It is a bit weird though...you would think they could at least show off some Mario Maker details as the "hook" for such a direct, or the next Smash Bros DLC. I'm convinced something went wrong and they fully intended for a direct this week or last week but had complications and opted not to do so.
@BAN You are correct, don't know 100% why exactly, I try to be nice to him and have nice and interesting conversations but he just acts up and says a bunch of nonsense in my face when we communicate most of the time nowadays. But if we play a video game together, he does change his attitude and is kinda a different person heheh. (Also probably a big reason why he hates me is because I like Anime and he hates mostly all Anime.)
I was hoping for a Fathers Day release, but close enough!
Buying it digitally. This is one I will frequently revisit.
Will any levels carry over from Wii U or 3DS? I bet they go clean slate.
So much information lately wish we had gotten a direct
Day one purchase for sure. I hope they have a Collector's Edition if some kind.
There hasn’t been a direct because they need to save stuff for E3 (remember that Sony is sitting this one out so they have a big opportunity). There also haven’t really been any new E ticket games announced, so such a direct would have been lacklustre.
@IceEarthGuard Well, maybe he’s just going through something and doesn’t know how to express it in a healthy way?
@JayronAuron If I had to guess, I’d say they just don’t consider the collective bulk of these bits of information to be worthy of a direct or to warrant the production of one, which they’d have to do in multiple languages, and not to mention that means they’d have to know a lot of this information well in advance, and I’d wager that a lot of these dates/details come down to the wire and make advance knowledge difficult.
And I’d have to agree with the decision to forego a direct for these types of things. The point is to disseminate all these varied little pieces of information to a lot of different types of people, and it’s not really suited to packaging it all together just to sooth the diehard fans like us. But of course, that’s just my opinion.
Flying boom boom, toad with hammer, koopa in a kart, WHAT, WHY, AND CAN I HAVE IT NOW PLEASE
Day 1 for me, no question! The artwork looks like we can play was Mario, Luigi, Toad and Toadette. Which is cool, better than only Mario...
But I was really hoping to see Peach and Rosalina too!
@JayronAuron
I think that because of the change in president, and the fiscal year thingy happening, there are just a lot of things going on.
A change in president comes with a change in management and a lot of moving around . I would say if Reggie didn't retire, maybe we would, but there are a lot of things going on. I know it's Nintendo of America , but it is a big change for Nintendo, similar to when Iwata passed, the new president of Nintendo of Japan happened, etc.
Half of E3 dedicated to Mario Maker 2, confirmed. They sure do love the last week of a month, don’t they?
Hate to be one of those people, but if the ability to make our own worlds isn't there, I'm not interested. I have the original Mario Maker on Wii U.
Plus I still haven't even tried the stage builder on Smash Ultimate!
@Onion I imagine the servers for SMM not long after MM2 releases (if not before) to encourage players to upgrade. After all, a pretty large chunk of the community has been waiting for a sequel and likely will make the switch in June, it would be a pretty safe time for them to pull the plug.
I knew they would do this. The end of the month whhhyyyy
Car? Oh yes, it's time for Mario Kart levels.
...! Oh! I know how to theme that Vanilla Lake level, now! Sweet.
Nintendo published retail boxed games are really weighted to the back end of the year aren’t they? In the pretty much the first six months we had NSMBUD, Yoshi, and Labo VR, then we get:
Mario Maker 2
Fire Emblem
Luigi’s Mansion 3
Animal Crossing
Pokemon Sword and Shield
Link’s Awakening
Astral Chain
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3
Daemon X Machina
If it wasn’t for last years games, indies and ports of RPGs I wouldn’t have been playing on my Switch much at all this year.
@MrGawain Maybe they really are waiting to talk about the new Switch model at E3. Or TGS.
Super Mario Land?!
For people complaining that there aren't a ton of Nintendo First Party releases in the first half of this year, REMEMBER LAST YEAR? We got Bayo 1&2, Captain Toad, Tropical Freeze and Hyrule Warriors. This year? We got Mario U. It's all your fault! There are still some fantastic Wii U games that could be ported (3D World, Pikmin 3, and both Zelda HD remakes)but they didn't fill in any of the gaps with them because way too many people whined about that last year!
Also I suspect that if there isn't a direct until E3 then that means that they're going to spend a whole bunch of time at E3 focused on Mario Maker. Which makes sense, they did a a great job hyping the first version and getting a ton of people tuning in for those crazy Mario Maker moments in the World Championships. Also I'm not sure but I feel like Mario Maker really blew up the Mario Speed Running community and resulted in some people who are flat out fantastic with all the mechanics. So it'd be cool if they had people like Dram55 and Ryukar and other streamers. I know GDQ did a really hilarious relay race of insane Kaizo type levels and it was incredibly fun to watch. If Nintendo did something like that during E3 they'd probably win the internet. Though they'd have to make sure that the speed runners weren't on a live mic because it's Nintendo and I'm sure anything entertaining Mario Makerwise is going to elicit a lot of fuzz from the runners.
I'm still hoping that I can make boomerang bros, fire bros, ice bros, and sumo bros (the ones from SMW). Don't ask me why, but for some reason not being able to put a boomerang bro into Mario Maker kind of killed it for me.
I also didn't love how I had to wait several days to unlock all the content. I could see people building cool things on the internet and I wasn't able to use the same tools because I hadn't been playing the game every day (I'm an adult, I have things to do... like make comments on a website that focuses on news about a kids toy). It'd be one thing if they had content unlock daily for EVERYBODY as a cool thing for the first few days of the game being out. But being rewarded with content I'd already paid for every day got annoying since I wasn't doing anything to earn it.
...We need a Mini Direct on this game already. >:c
I want more info! TwT
This'll be on the pre-order at the earliest opportunity!
I got this for $3 on my PS4 five years ago, not interested in getting it again.
I imagine this is going to have tons of stuff in it, I expect an extended sneak peek or two for all those people who skipped the Wii U era. Looking forward to hearing more.
@BanjoPickles im looking foward to play your lvl man!!! hahaha
It seems like a capacitive touchscreen pen may come as a special edition or preorder bonus for the game in Japan and Europe.
Of course America gets shafted on what could be a very useful accessory given what you'll be doing in half of this game i.e. drawing out levels.
Just give me a cut down version for £10 please! I don't want to make any levels just play other peoples.
If the UK limited edition one with the free 1 year Switch Online Subscription is the same price as the regular it would be a good deal.
@westman98 The official UK store has them with either a random mario figure set or an actual pencil and paper pad. I would jump at a version with a stylus!
Can any new information be gleaned from the announcement video? Is this the first time we see a Banzai Bill traveling vertically?
Honestly don’t care whether all this information reaches us in bits or as a Direct; as long as we are told it all.
Looking forward to it!
@PrettyPatrick You mean horizontally. And no, they showed that in the first trailer
This summer looks great for switch releases, and this game is one of many games I plan on getting day one!🙌
Took forever, but I finnally got in my pre-order from amazon! See you all on aunch day!
1. Will Amiibo work for this game also?
2. If so, how will they look/work in the 3D World stages? Were they always limited to 8 bit avatars?
@Bunkerneath SMP - Super Mario Player - for $10 actually sounds like a really good idea for people on the fence. But I'm guessing they're expecting most people to pony up the $60 so they don't need to.
Maybe we'll get a demo w/ just the 1st theme? Nintendo hasn't been awful w/ demo's on Switch.
@IceEarthGuard Your Brother sucks
@ClassSonicSatAm Hahah, but I still love him regardless in a brotherly way!
@JayronAuron That`s exactly what I meant by "I miss the Directs". It appears some people come to the comment section just to pick arguments lol. Thanks for saving me the hassle.
@Kalmaro You'll never escape the invisible blocks
Mwahahahahahaha!!!
@Tandy255 I hope they do! I spent a lot of work on some of those levels... Maybe they could pull a Minecraft and let you download your old creations!
The most important question hasn't been answered: Is it any use buying it when you don't want a Nintendo Online subscription?
In the original I had lots of fun with playing other people's levels and unlocking the 8-bit characters. But I fear I can't play other people's levels this time without that stupid subscription. What's left for me then? Some inbuild levels from Nintendo?
Sure seems like the online subscription is needed if they have a bundle that includes one. The question is, if we're paying for it now, will they leave our uploaded levels alone this time? I had at least half a dozen just dropped off the list for no good reason in the Wii U version, some less than a week after uploading. I know some of my levels would have been enjoyed eventually if they had given them a chance to be found in that haystack listing system.
I'm also not really interested in any new version of the Miiverse comments, though. Giving people the ability to clutter up my levels with comment boxes just so they could break out their best caveman-speak and proclaim "level bad" didn't really make my day. Oh yeah, Alley Oop? Well, "grammar bad", too. Thanks for sharing.
Still, happy to finally have an actual date. That "June" thing had me fearing a delay was on the way.
@IceEarthGuard Fair enough :3
