At the start of this month, there was a rumour EA was working on Frostbite engine support for the Nintendo Switch. It began to circulate when YouTuber Doctre81 found an interesting detail on an EA Software Engineer’s LinkedIn webpage, revealing how the individual had been working on bringing existing software development kits to the Nintendo Switch and went on to state how they had worked on SDKs previously used in Battlefield V and Anthem.

In the latest update, the same LinkedIn page has now been updated. The profile edit removes any mention of the Switch supporting existing software kits and instead makes mention of a "different platform". Take a look at the change below:

Here’s what the source had to say:

As we previously explained, FIFA games on Switch are currently running on a custom-made engine. If EA does bring Frostbite engine support to the Switch, it means games such as FIFA would utilise the same engine as the Xbox One and PS4 counterparts. There's obviously speculation this could result in other Frostbite games being brought across to Nintendo's hybrid platform in the future.

In 2017, EA's FIFA lead Andrei Lazaresu said the development team opted with a custom-made engine on the Switch, as it didn't want the new FIFA game (at the time) to run on a lower-quality version of the Frostbite engine:

"We intentionally chose to do a custom engine because we felt that rather and try and get Frostbite running and end up having to downsize things and making it just a smaller, lower-quality version of the PS4 and Xbox One versions, we wanted this to be a FIFA that stands on its own two feet."

EA may have since worked out a way to get this engine up and running on the Switch with fewer compromises.
