Topic: Wii protection against kids

Today I found my daughter (6yo) pursuing my son (2yo) probably trying to convert him in a salt statue or something worse.
It seems he was happily accessing to the Wii admin options (yes he is able to aim quite accurately with the Wiimote) and deleting saved games (all my daughter progress in MKarts, for example between others).

Is there any way to protect the access to these options?

I doubt there's much you could do, but you could try moving the save data to an SD card. It'd be a little bit of a hassle, but you could have the saves on there, removed from your Wii. Then whenever you need them, just pop it in and move the save data back.

I second this. Annoying, but the best way to protect it.

Thanks guys, it is INCREDIBLE that Nintendo had not implemented any way to protect this. A 2yo kid can reach quicky the option to "Format your Wii" and click "YES".

I should point out, though, that saved data for Mario Kart (which is one of your concerns) can't be copied to the SD card. At least it couldn't...maybe a system update changed this, but for a long time at least, any game with online content didn't allow its saves to be kept on an SD card. That included Smash Bros., Mario Kart, and pretty much anything with online rankings.

I remember years ago my brother deleted every piece of save data I had on my memory card for GC. That was one of the worst days of my life.

I'd suggest using an accessory that hasn't been built in to the Wii. Maybe buying a wireless sensor bar and removing the batteries when you're done?

Dah, this will work.

In that case, couldn't you just remove the batteries from the Wii-remote?

I know this sounds like a smart answer, but maybe your 2 year old shouldn't be using the Wii unsupervised.

Nintendo is more concerned about protecting kids from accessing content that could be detrimental than about protecting system data from the kids. When you think about it, this makes a lot of sense... although being able to lock the "control panel" would be a useful feature! (No kidding, maybe you should report this feedback to Nintendo. It sounds like something they might be willing to implement for future consoles or even for a future firmware update.)

That works too.

Dah, this will work.

I have no need for the Parental Control options, so I don't know.
You saying there isn't an option to password-lock the parental controls?
Or just that the parental controls should cover more system features?

i'd throw my vote in with 'removing the batteries when you're done playing'. that'll keep even the older children from messing with it if you don't want them to :3

Unplug the sensor bar, then nothing works.

Why not just put your wiimote's in a place the kidz can't get to em'. Simple ,no?

What's this bit for again?

Mandoble

Removing the batteries? It might be simpler to just hide the controls. Of course this is not any solution as that would affect also his sister. Today my daughter was playing, moved to her room to look for the box of a game, and when she returned might be 5 mins later the little moster was already happily deleting saved games. In fact, he was screaming MAAAARIO MAAARIO, thinking that he was starting Mario Karts of something like that, while in fact, he was deleting it. IMO this is a tremendous security fault in Wii design.

I'd recommended against JUST hiding the batteries. There are some crafty six year olds (or, maybe two years olds if yours is smart enough to delete specific save game data o__O) who would just nab AA batteries from other house-hold appliances and that only creates more problems. Hiding the sensor bar, A/V cables or something else would be smarter as you can't just find those anywhere effortlessly.

@Mandoble
I feel your Pain, it happen to me,meny times.

The Best way to deal with this. is to have an Back up on your SD Card,
but not all games can be Save on one.(for some unknow reason).
But it seens wrong to just take the Batteries away.

For you, the day LordJumpMad graced your threads, was the most important day of your life. But for me, it was Tuesday.

In the Little Rascals they got tired of chasing around the 2-year-old so they glued her skirt bottom to the floor. I'm just saying, if all else fails ...

But I'm sympathetic. ... You can't possibly be there every second to see every single thing they do. Locking the system controls, as someone suggested, would be an awesome update.

guys, if all you're going to do is get on Mandoble's case for not having his eyes glued to his kids every second out of the day, please note that it's already been done and has already been deleted out of this thread. move along, please.
