Well, it's not really a confirmation on anything, but it definately has to mean something. Geno, Little Mac, Mega Man, Professor Layton, Pikachu and Kirby are mentioned to be in some Grand Smash Bros. Tournament. It also hints that if Layton was in a new smash bros, he'd use a fencing sword. Pretty cool stuff
THIS IN NO WAY CONFIRMS THAT SUPER SMASH BROS. 4 IS IN THE WORKS. But this is really interesting news. I'm pretty sure that Nintendo would be working on a new Smash game with or without Sakurai.
Why would Nintendo hint at a new smash bros. featuring these four new characters? Why not just use established characters in that post? I mean, if he said "I was forced to fight an Italian plumber, a green-clad swordsman, and a giant ape with a tie" then yeah, this wouldn't really be a big deal, but instead, Nintendo mentions Geno, Little Mac, Mega Man and Layton. Why?

After reading what the "professor" said, it actually does seem to be a hint at a new smash and these characters. I can't imagine why they'd start that sort of rumor if they had no plans for a new smash. Geno wasn't in Brawl due to legal issues, so perhaps they got arround those? Or maybe it's the Tails Doll? Mega Man was begging to be in it from the beginning, so really it's about time. And Professor Layton seems like a reasonable choice, but I've yet to play the game, so I don't know what his moves could be or how he would work.
I think it is a hint at a new smash, but I'm not going to get all hyped just yet. Until it's 100% confirmed, I'll just speculate. If it truly does exist, I can't wait to play as Mega Man! I hope they make a new Sub Space, but with actual levels from the rosters games. And add Tails to the roster.

I really hope this means a new Smash Brothers...I bet it ends up being a DSi exclusive, just to tick me off =P

I think we're making too much of it. It could just be their idea of humour. Nintendo of America really doesn't know a lot about what is going on at Nintendo Japan, and since it's coming from them, I've got high doubts about it even meaning anything in particular except maybe signification that professor Layton became a "true" Nintendo franchise, with sequels and all.
I hope it is a dsi exclusive actually. Maybe it is because I actually own a dsi, but I want a game with expandable characters for download. If it was on just normal ds that wouldnt be possible. But I want to smash anywhere. That would be awesome sauce
