@Bolt_Strike: Those "slightly wonky controls" were not only the reason I never played SM64DS past the first two stars, but also the primary reason I didn't actually have a DS until the 3DS. They tried to do 3D movement with a D-Pad or shoehorned in wonky touch screen controls on a top-down perspective that didn't really work for most of the games in question.
Apparently Nintendo is stretched thin on development resources. They can't even port over Wii VC games or develop a way to just shortcut them to the Wii U menu.
I wouldn't call the controls terrible by any means, they still worked perfectly 99% of the time. Would the game have controlled better with analog? Absolutely. But is the game broken with out them? Not by a long shot.
Next year will be the 20th anniversary of Super Mario 64 so I'm kind of hoping Nintendo does something special to celebrate this hallmark. 3DS, Wii U or Nx, it's fine by me.
And yes, Super Mario 64 was made to be played with an analogue control stick. It's kind of a big deal. It was the wrong game to release on the DS, it feels broken with the D-pad.
@Bolt_Strike: This is a testament to the amazing craftsmanship of Nintendo Platformers. I can't stand games where the controls are even the least bit off. The movement controls completely turned me off of most 3D DS titles, including Phantom Hourglass and Mario 64 DS (Yes, I know people have a lot to complain about in Phantom Hourglass, but I didn't even make it to that stuff). 99% of the time, Nintendo's controls are spot on. I have absolutely no problems with them. The other 1% of the time, they just make me cringe.
I still play an updated version of the game on current gen systems through backwards compatibility. Give me Galaxies on a portable system instead, since the star system worked well as a pick-up-and-play mechanic in SM64 DS. Then maybe in a few years, when SM64 hasn't been playable except on VC on current gen consoles in a long time, I'll be ready for an update. When it does....give me optional co-op play or head-to-head multiplayer against the other's visible ghost that wasn't possible then. Or even better, leaderboards with downloadable ghosts to race against for level-by-level speedruns against streetpass, friends, and world champs. Even more all-out: a level editor with downloadable player-made content.
Wait until the future lets us do a bit more with the remake then just a visual upgrade, IMO. More memory and faster worldwide download speeds, better online infrastructure for something like that. I want it remade...just not yet.

Super Mario 64 has never really left the marketplace, and so another remake is not a necessity at this point in time. Super Mario 64 was available throughout the lifespan of the Nintendo 64 (1996-2002?), followed closely by a remake Super Mario 64 DS (released less than 10 years after the release of the original game), and the DS remake was also available throughout the entire lifespan of the Nintendo DS (2004-2012; that's at least 8 years on store shelves!), and that's not factoring in the Wii and Wii U downloadable releases.
Anybody who wanted the game would have it by now and it has been on store shelves for at least 15 years in some form while also being available as a digital download for the past 7 or so years. I'm sure that some hardcore fans may be interested to see what Nintendo does with the game with superior graphics, controls etc., but it just isn't necessary. Nintendo would better utilise their resources towards new games, particularly as releases on current hardware are already quite sparse.
Rather than issue remakes, I'd rather that Nintendo put in just a little work and allowed for Nintendo DS and Nintendo 64 games to be rendered natively in 1080p. Widescreen may prove to be too much work considering that all of these games were designed for narrower displays, but rendering at 1080p, even at a 4:3 aspect ratio, would be most welcome.
@sillygostly is 100 percent correct with the above post.
@larry_koopa "atleast sony and Microsoft update and re release their games" Do you realize you are not the only one who has games he likes? So then you realize that everyone has different opinions, hence, they like different games than you? Ok, so in order for Nintendo to make everyone happy, they'd have to constantly go around "updating" and "re releasing" every game they've ever made. Seriously, everyone calls for the games they like to be remade, and they think that because they chose that one, THAT'S the one that should be remade. "But everyone on the internet likes this one!" Seriously, look at it from Nintendo's perspective, they have this catalog of literally thousands of games, with probably 80-90 percent of them having people that want them remade. They don't have time to do that crap, unless you want them to never make new games. If they make ANY remakes, be happy that they took time from what their main priority is and should be, and that's making NEW games.

Light Yagami, Death Note
"Ah, the Breakfast Club soundtrack! I can't wait 'til I'm old enough to feel ways about stuff!"

And even then, remakes of older games are EXPENSIVE. when SM64 first came out it looked like this:
None of this is reusable. And modern mario games look like this:
Look at all the money that went into that.
Looking at these is an example of how Nintendo went from "cartoonish but fine for adults" to "shiny, super bright, plastic toy looking graphics that are so deliberately aimed at young kids it actually alienates older fans"

So basically, you want Nintendo 64 graphics rendered at a higher resolution? I mean, come on. Defend the gameplay all you want, but visually? It's a product of its time (i.e. ugly).
I'm a grown man and I love the graphics of Super Mario 3D World. The only issue I have with it visually is that it is not being rendered natively at 1080p, but I won't get into that now.
"Gee, that's really persuasive. Do you have any actual points to make other than to essentially say 'me Tarzan, physical bad, digital good'?"
Why would they invest such money into doing so when they can just rehash it on virtual console, claiming it to be 'retro'. Plus, Mario 64 DS is still within mempry, so remaking a game which has alreqdy been made makes them come off as sleazes. Like with the recent Resi 1 remake. Also, the only reason the DS remake did not have revamped graphics is because the DS didn't produce great 3D graphics anyway.

You ought to check out the comparison images online. The DS remake offered a significant visual upgrade (such as Bowser actually looking like Bowser), and visually, is much closer to more contemporary Mario platformers such as Super Mario Galaxy than the original Super Mario 64.

I don't see how 3D World's art style alienates older fans.
Yeah, let's not complain about 3D World's art style. Let's complain about 3D World's gameplay and how it was a safe and soulless rehash that replaced the only good part of main series Mario with a 3D NSMB that doesn't feel distinct at all in spite of the extra dimension.
I've played Mario 64 more times than I can count and the graphics and/ or controls have never been an issue to me. The game deserves a remake on a Nintendo system that sells well, not to be a forgotten gem on Wii U. If any system however has a ton of games that need remakes for wider audiences, it's the Gamecube
Yeah, the Gamecube has some great games that could use remakes. Sunshine could definitely use an upgrade with more content, and they could add a few things to Prime 1 and 2 to make them better.
@Bolt_Strike: Or instead you could not try to complain about 3D World's gameplay. You think it is bad, many people (who have actually played the game, unlike you) disagree with you. Lets just stop, we have had this conversation several times already
People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

Many people are not objectively right.
And if you don't want to talk about it, don't reply. It's that simple.
