It's a reference to Super Mario World and its world names. Remember:

DONUT Plains
VANILLA Dome
BUTTER Bridge
CHEESE Bridge
SODA Lake
CHOCOLATE Island

Same thing.

Heck, Wario Land did it too:

RICE Beach
Mt TEA POT
SHERBET Land
STOVE Canyon
SS TEA CUP
PARSELY Woods
FORK Tree
SYRUP Castle

not to mention KITCHEN Island.

Also, forgot the obvious:

Hey, lookie, Baby Yoshi footage.

Interestingly, it doesn't look like Mario can stay underwater for long.

Nah, that's not an oxygen timer or anything, GameExplain just said it was some coins falling out of a pipe nearby:

"Actually, there's no time limit from breathing underwater. What made you guys think that? (honestly curious since I'm not seeing it)"

"Ahh, those were just coins popping out of a pipe early on"

^I'm betting it's nearly certain one exists.

This time though, I'm hoping the special world actually has a purpose, maybe changing the ending.

Both NSMBW and NSMB2 had an unlockable world after you complete the game, so i'm at least posetive we will have some kind of new world after completing the game. If it's a secret or not however...

Is Boom-Boom a single character or an enemy species? I always thought he was one character, but I saw multiple Boom-Booms on the world map.

Hard to say. I think Nintendo is leaning towards him being a species now, but it was anyone's guess what he was in Super Mario Bros 3.

I'm leaning towards species. In SMB 3 there is at least one or two individuals that I remember having different colors. But then again that could just be lighting in separate arenas, so it's still up to debate. Perhaps NSMBU will provide some answers?

Pikmin fact of the week: The Pearly Clamclamps in Pikmin 1 can still attack and eat Pikmin even after being defeated. They are the only creatures in the game able to do so.

Looks like there was only version of Boom Boom in SMB3, the Spriter's Resource doesn't have sprites in more than one palette for him. Then again, maybe they didn't rip all the frames or variations or something.

I'd like the bosses to be Koopalings- but instead of you fighting the Koopalings, they get stuff to fight you for them. Like in LoZ Skyward sword where the Demon Lord makes that magma ball fight you for him.
