Topic: Nikkei claims Nintendo will announce demos, apps for smartphones, tablets

Why I think this will work.

I thought I heard whispers of Nintendo trying to utilize mobiles for advertising (or 'connecting') purposes, anyway I think this whole Wii U kerffufle has sped that up. Having a dedicated app for updates and news, trailers, announcements, nintendo direct streaming etc... is great idea. It was not too long ago that Nintendo didn't have Youtube/Facebook/Twitter and that's going well.

Also Miiverse is scheduled to come soon, and maybe an eShop (perhaps integrated into the main app?). But the main reason I think this is a good idea is that having free-to-play games or even small priced mini games is that in doing so they would culturally become a RELEVANT brand.

And they would do this because Nintendo does this stuff well - they would dominate the appstore charts! I refer you here: http://www.mariowiki.com/Minigame also lets not forget http://www.pokezam.com/games/n64/stadium/minigames.php . They have a catalogue of games ready for this.

They NEED more than f2p Steel Diver which was announced like 8 months ago. Dedicate a decent amount of staff to this cause and it will work, but if they pussyfoot around and sheepishly enter with 1 or 2 so-so games over a year it will be wasted (Basically if they do it they should have learnt the value of launches being important!!!). Should not be a wasted effort. Also release the same things for 3ds, I mean why not?

This sounds real because it is stuff we have heard Nintendo say they would do already - I just hope that they get a sense of urgency and go in hard!

Dunno how home console demos will work, but yeah, seems possible.

@Mizore I bet the console demos will only work in high end devices.

I don't think demos will be of the games themselves, I think the mini-games and the demos will go hand in hand or be the same thing. How would a 3DS demo on a phone even work?

I like to think it'd just be "interactive advertisements" for their products, basically.

yup but they can keep the graphics faithful to the full game and home console graphics are too much for low end devices

I suspect if this is true it'll mostly be for pushing Nintendo Directs and game trailers etc to tablets and phones. At most it'll link to your NNID and let you buy stuffs. That said I do remember a short browser demo for Professor Layton ages ago. I wouldn't be that shocked if something along those lines was also on the cards.

I want to play Nintendo games on Nintendo consoles. But Mario is a household name. There is no reason why when you search for top selling games or new games on smartphones you have to find rip off Mario titles using Mario names. They may be taken off later but still earning money, money not going to Nintendo.
Millions of people will prefer to pay Nintendo for a Mario Run App than a Rayman Run App. It is stupid for Nintendo not to do that in addition to its consoles.

I think people are reading too much into this. We're basing all of this on an article from a reputable source that has been translated. That's third hand information regardless of how reliable the original source is. When we hear it directly from the source (i.e. Nintendo) that would be the time when we can start talking about how good an idea the finer details are. As of now all we know with a fair degree of certainty is that they're probably making an app full of promotional material for their games.

Anything further than that assumes that what sort of "demos" the demos are wasn't lost in translation or even stated in the first place. Could be as simple as just an eShop front for smartphones where they "demo" the games using videos and pictures. Could be interactive ads of some kind. I highly doubt it's demos in the traditional sense because that's basically impossible for all but a select few games.

That's an interesting way of doing things. I don't think it'll work though.

Finally someone agrees with me, they say they won't bring there games anytime soon. But thats a lie. Nintendo will become like SEGA, because if they put there games and I know they are. People are going to say why do I need to buy a 3DS if I can play there games on my Phone or Tablet? Thats exactly what going to happen. Mark my words. Speaking my mind. There going to fail.

Accept if its a demo of the game it could get people to buy a 3DS or Wii U. There is a difference between a demo and a full game.

I try the demo of Sonic 4 Episode 2 on my Kindle Fire HD and it's the worst experience I ever had in a video game.

And your evidence for this is? I mean we've got translation of well respected Japanese news outlet that has been told by a source that Nintendo will be announcing a promotional app for tablets and smartphones. That that app will include video and images but will also include "mini games" and "demos" that relate to content that will only be available on the 3DS and Wii U.

How do you go from that to "they're going full SEGA, they're going to put Pokemon/Zelda/Mario on iOS, they're doomed!". You know those little mini-sites that they've had since forever? What has been said that doesn't also describe what would effectively be a more polished version of that?

here's that Professor Layton demo I was talking about earlier: http://professorlayton.nintendo.com/thelastspecter/puzzle-demos/

Nah see Nintendo is actually doing a wrong move. Instead of going out there and market the Wii. There doing the opposite here. Let me speak my my mind Its a stupid move. There so many reasons. But I think I explained my self before on here. But Im going to give them a chance......Lets see what they got.

That's not really what I'm saying.

I'm talking about the profitability of the project. I don't think bringing demos of 3DS or WiiU games to iOS or Android will help them much, if at all. I think people will play those demos and get their "Nintendo fix" without ever purchasing a 3DS or WiiU. This whole idea seems like an obvious "we need to shut investors up" kind of thing.

If they're going to enter the smartphone market, I think it'd be better to release actual games to be honest. Hell, try selling Steel Diver on iOS. No one seems to like that game on the 3DS anyway. I think releasing demos might cost more than it generates. We'll see though.

That's exactly what they'll be doing with this idea. They're going to market WiiU & 3DS software on smartphones. It's a good idea on paper.

Yes, you're overreacting. It's basically third hand information that Nintendo are looking at making something like an eShop experience minus the "buying games" bit on iOS and Android. In the most obvious interpretation it's nothing more than what Sony, Microsoft and Valve already do.
