Don't count the backwards compatibility out because you lack any Wii/DS games. You can still get them and some of them are great games as well and can be found cheap now.
Both systems have great games, so you should factor also things like portability (3DS) or the ability of playing couch multiplayer (Wii U) with your friends using only one console. I have both but overall I prefer to play on a big screen and I barely take my 3DS out with me.

If you care about Nintendo first party games and nothing else Wii U, if you want Nintendo first party games but would also like some (Japanese) third party games, 3DS

Backwards compatibility is also better on the Wii U. DS games look like trash on a 3DS....I am seriously considering getting my DSiXL repaired or replaced just for DS games because my 3DS XL doesn't play them to my satisfaction visually.
There is the problem of needing controllers for BC on Wii U while on 3DS all you need is the game.
3DS is a great choice and it is cheaper but Wii U is superior so you get what you pay for in my opinion.
Alright guys, as many of you may already know I never got the Wii. Can anyone suggest any awesome games for the Wii? The ones that I already know are Mario Galaxy 1&2, Xeno (can't find that game anywhere) and smash.

I won't play DS games on my 3DS XL never liked it (Found out after getting a DSi XL some like Metal Slug 7 just don't perform right).
I think the quality of the DS games I have is better generally than most of my 3DS ones though. (Designed for it as opposed to recycled Wii technology at 30fps).
A Link Between Worlds / Kid Icarus : Uprising / Yumi's Odd Odyssey (Sayonara UmiharaKawase) are the only games I have I think are of the best quality.

Kirby's Epic Yarn. That game also still looks nice on HDMI.
