Hello, so im thinking about buying a Nintendo Wii U or 3DS (maybe both?) However iv never played any nintendo game in my life except pokemon emerald, so im not really too sure about it.

I am interested in games like Super Smash Bros Brawl, Mario Kart, Mario in general, Zelda, Pokemon, Monster Hunter and recently saw Splatoon and Xenoblade Chronicles X

I dont know anyone in RL who has a Wii U either so i wont have friends to play with... (tho i would play with them irl when they come to my house)
Another thing is about the gamepad, is the gamepad used alot for games? can u get another one? if its used a lot how do you play local co op well with only one?

Thanks for any advice in advance.

You should get it.

It's not like you won't be able to sell it away if you don't like it.

I'd advice to start with the 3DS, it's overall cheaper, has most of the games you want to try and it's easier to sell should you want to.

Nintendo has a vast variety of titles. Start with the ones that appeal to your tastes first.

Might want to start now then.

We have friend threads here for both Wii U and 3DS.

Most games have Off-TV play, where you can use the gamepad screen to play the game. Some games use it for maps or a second-screen.

Buy both, and you can thank me later.

So how does local co op work if there is only 1 gamepad?

I see.... is it still fun for the people using the pro controllers? like they wont miss out on any content or anything cuz they are not using the gamepad?

Eel

They will probably not miss anything.

You could always pass around the pad if they want to use it, though.

Nintendo is the most diverse publisher out there, making tins of different types of games. If I were you, I would try and get a Wii U Deluxe and a 3DS XL bundled with a game.

And if you want local 3ds multiplayer, u and your buds or family must each have one of the 3 handhelds in the 3DS family. You are able to play online with both.

If you get a WiiU, pick up a couple of wiimotes, it's backwards compatible with the original Wii games, and there's more than plenty to chose from where games are concerned.
Also, the 3DS is backwards compatible with DS games too.

WiiU is an awesome console, both for solo and multi local playing.... you will have a lot of fun with it...

Reading that you never played Nintendo games, I just, honestly, advice you about the lack of 3rd parties at the moment... if you like to play big franchises like COD, AC and company, just consider that they are not coming to WiiU, so if it will be your only console... think it twice...

I lived in New Zealand for a year, and currently live in the States, having also lived in Canada for a year and spending most of my life in England (I'm currently 28). Anyway, NZ is the most expensive place I've ever been. The cost of living is crazy high and the wages there really don't equate. The south island is very beautiful though

I would reccomend starting with the 3DS. It's much cheaper, and has a good variety of first and third-party games already. I would reccomend playing the 3DS for a while, and looking over the the Wii U as opposed to other next-gen consoles again, as if you want third-party games you'll want one of those. Plus, if you wait the Wii U will have more games more interested in out. I will note that if you have friends over a lot (or will with a Wii U), then it has and will probably keep having the best local multiplayer.

I was basically like you, before buying the Wii. My only console before that was the Game Boy - that was my main memory of Mario. But you are interested in Mario in general, and in the upcoming Smash Bros, and other titles like MH and even Xenoblade, so you really got a lot going for. I'd say buy the Wii U and start exploring the VC and the Wii games together with Wii U games - it will be more interesting than a 3DS, since with the Wii U you get access to the Wii VC (that's virtual console) which is much bigger than the 3DS.

I play my Wii U more than my 3DS.

Games on 3DS are not of the same quality as console games....their is just overall development philosophies that are different when developing for a portable...I don't necessarily like it but its just the way it is.

I mean are you going to recommend Link Between worlds and Phantom hourglass over Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword?

Are you going to recommend New Super Mario Bros and New Super Mario Bros. 2 over New Super Mario Bros Wii and New Super Mario Bros. U?

Are you going to recommend Super Mario 3D land over Super Mario 3D world?

Get the Wii U...I think it has the better Virtual Console and if you get a classic controller the Wii VC has even more stuff. You also have access to GBA Virtual console games on the Wii U and not on the 3DS. Are there any SNES games on 3DS VC?

Wow, I am saying Wii U has more games than 3DS...when the heck did that happen?
