Topic: Is Wii U Right for Me?

Hey Guys!

I will try to make this as short as possible. In the past I have owned the following systems:

NES
PSX
PS3/ High End Gaming PC (Current)

I dont know whats going on but I feel that I have not played many good games this generation, especially on my console (PS3). I did like a few games (Killzone 2, and God of War series) on the PS3. The interesting part is that I bought most of my games for the PS3 (I have over 30).On PC i loved Warcraft 3 TFT, Amnesia Dark Descent, HOMM series, as well as all Deus Ex Games, and finally Witcher 2. These are the only games which have stood out to me this whole gen.

I am only 23 years old, but when I think about gaming in the past... I realize that I used to have a lot more fun. SNES was my first console and is by far my favorite. I still remember Mario Bros 3, Megaman 4 and 6, and the Legend of Zelda 1&2.

I did not buy the Wii because of the following:

1. The graphical capabilities of the console were not as good as the other ones
.2. I did not like the controller. I tried playing some of the cassics on the Wii (SMB3) and found the controls inadequate.
3. I did not think that games were NOT aimed at the "hardcore" audience. Now I am starting to wonder if that is actually a good thing. Games aimed at the "hardcore" seem to be 8 hours in length, generic, and completely forgettable. This console gen has been a waste to me.

So I ask you Nintendo Fans.... Do you think Nintendo Wii-U is for me? Do you think Nintendo will continue making games like the classics this upcoming gen? I am really liking the new controller they have going, and think it has a lot of potential. Also, I see they have a different variety of games coming like ZombiU.

Do you think that Wii U could be the next NES? Let me know as I am pretty confused about what I should buy next.

PS. I no longer care about graphics. I know Wii U will not be as good as PS4 and XBOX360 in that regard. Thats fine by me. The worst game in the universe (AKA BF3) has amazing Graphics which I was able to view while playing on my gaming rig. Suffice it to say that game is garbage and my last purchase from EA.

Thanks!

As a long-time PC gamer who bought a Wii because it offered something different (my first console since the SNES) I'd say the Wii U may be worth a look-in. i didn't see a lot of value in buying a 360 or PS3, since I prefer to game on a PC and many of the titles that were released on those consoles also came out on the PC (I would still like to play some of the console exclusives such as Red Dead Redemption, though). However, the Wii was something completely different that I couldn't get on the PC, so I bought it and have never regretted it.

My advice would be wait and see for the time being. Stick with what you've got and see what the next-gen consoles have to offer. If you can get a different experience from buying one of the next-gen consoles then do that, but I wouldn't rush in and fork out money until they've been out long enough to get a good feel for what they can do. No point spending $500 or so for something that turns out to be a low-end PC.

I used to have a blog link here. I'll put it back up when the blog has something to read.

For point number 2 on why you didn't buy the console, that's why they made the classic controller. Nintendo has proven that they will always make really high quality games. Super Mario Galaxy, enough said. That game alone topped Super Mario 64 by a lot of peoples standards, one of the most important games in gaming. The Wii was actually a really good system, it's just the third party support wasn't that great. There were definitely a few 3rd party gems but I wish we got more. The Wii definitely had some games that will stand to the test of time. I don't know how the WiiU is going to be, but I do know that Nintendo is definitely going to make a few masterpieces all the systems before it. This console generation, through my experiences with DS and Wii, has been very enjoyable.

There was a lot of interesting new games that had some revolutionary ideas on both of Nintendo's systems. NIntendo DS was completely awesome with it's plethora of memorable "cult classics". I also liked the VC feature on the Wii, and since I am only 17, it has been one of the most useful features on the Wii because I got all the revolutionary new games with the old. This generation was extremely awesome for me and extremely memorable. The WiiU should easily be better than the Wii because it should solve all the problems with the Wii. The Wii only had three problems, power, online, and third party support, and even with that it was really great. It should be a great system, but we will have to wait and see. I am really nervous because Nintendo is in a great position right now to make something great, I don't want them to blow it.

if you have a Ps3 and only have a few games you like (or any console with any decent amount of success for that matter), you're probably doing it wrong.

Thank you for your responses guys. I will take into consideration what everyone is saying... Regarding doing it wrong... I really dont think I am. And i dont think that a lot of people are going to be playing this gen's games 10 years down the line.

Games like this are nowhere to be found nowadays (the music, the gameplay, the stories... ahhh the good old days of gaming):

and
and

and so on.

Not many games from this gen are memorable. Maybe I am just growing out of gaming or something... But I honestly believe that the quality of games has went down other the years as the industry has become increasingly commercialized.

I've been a Nintendo fan (boy) since Mario Bros and Donkey Kong in the arcades. The Wii U will be the first Nintendo console that I'm not getting right around launch. I'm on the close verge of being completely done with Nintendo.

You messed up! By skipping Wii you missed the most retro focused console this gen. One of the most impressive features of the Wii to a classic Nintendo fan is that you can play titles from all their home consoles from NES to Gamecube (if you have a backwards compatible GCN).

You are what you eat from your head to your feet.

I'd say that you didn't mess up by not buying a wii, if you buy a WiiU buy the great wii games as well, like ExciteBots, ExciteBike World Rally, SMG, SMG2, Kirby Epic Yarn, Return to dream land, skyward sword, DKCR, and if your old enough No More Heroes, NMH2

kkslider and I don't often agree, but... I agree with him here.

You're clearly doing it wrong. The PS3 has some of the most memorable games I've ever played.

Every console is the same. It has a tonne of games that no one remembers, and then a few special games that are worth buying the re re re re rerelease of on a "virtual console" on a future system for the 10th time.

And three or so generations down the track there will be a whole generation of gamers going on about the good old days of PS3 games and how graphics don't matter, it's gameplay, and how modern games suck.

Eh, I guess it's your opinion. But I definitely believe that people will still be playing Portal 2, Mario Galaxy, Red Dead Redemption, and Bioshock, among many others many years down the road.
In regards to your question, I'd say wait a little bit for the time being. Work with what you've got for now and wait to see if it offers what you want. By the way, have you played Super Meat Boy? Seeing your gaming preferences, it seems right up your alley. It's on Steam.

Sorry to keep pushing my point but I think Otaku, you are kind of missing what I'm saying.
If the OP is skeptical about the Wii U, what a waste it would be to shell out an extra couple hundred bucks just to play Wii games on Wii U.

And for the record, I agree with Cho above.

I guess our gaming preferences differ. Bioshock didnt do anything for me. I replayed SMB3 and Legend of Zelda dozens of times. Bioshock got a single playthrough from me. Cant comment on the other ones... Guess Ill have to wait and see....

If you've enjoyed a lot of Nintendo first party titles in the past, I say go for it.
It's too early to tell how good the Wii U's third party support will be, but it's pretty safe to say it'll get its share of awesome Nintendo titles over the years.
Plus, considering you missed the Wii entirely, there's a lot of great titles that you can catch up on too thanks to backwards compatibility.

that is a good point. I could catch up on the Wii games I missed and Get whatever new things are coming to the Wii U. What games would you recommend from the Wii's library?

also, will the old NES games be compatible?
