I do think Smash Wii U, Hyrule Warriors and especially Bayonetta 2 should get their own direct of some sort.

I'd say maybe not all 30+ minutes, but the Mario Kart one worked despite much of it being already revealed info just by actually being somewhat entertaining.

As far as retail games go, I don't think we're going to be seeing very many over the next year, we've got a ton in development and a few more being hinted at. They'll probably announce like, 5 or 6 full retail titles (and probably a bunch of other smaller stuff like SNES Remix) over the next year or so and then save some of the bigger games for next E3. IDK what to expect though, most of what's been hinted at is the bigger stuff that we probably won't see until E3 (Super Mario Galaxy 3, Metroid, Pokken Fighters), and I can't think of any franchises that could get a new game that either don't already have one or could be announced outside of E3 (Wii U is noticeably missing Animal Crossing, Paper Mario, and a main series Kirby game). This is about all I can predict:

Fall/Winter announcements:
Majora's Mask 3D
Mario sports game for Wii U

Spring announcements:
New main series Pokemon game (probably Z or XY2)

E3 announcements:
Super Mario Galaxy 3
Metroid U
Metroid 3D
Pokken Fighters
Animal Crossing U
Paper Mario U
The second 3DS Zelda game

IDK what else to expect in the next year.

Geez. You're expecting a fair bit there, aren't ya? MM3D may get announced this Winter... but I really don't think so. Maybe at the end-of-year Direct. That's the only viable time, really. I still don't get why people are so fixated on it being 3D. I would prefer it on the Wii U, personally, but I guess that's just me? I also don't know if a Mario Sports game would be ready for announcement any time this year. CAMELOT /just now/ finished up with Mario Golf World Tour's DLC, and that's assuming they don't have one more surprise up their sleeve for Mario Golf World Tour. Besides, I'd prefer to see them work on a new Golden Sun, but I don't think any of us believe that's gonna happen, anyways.

Yeah, following the pattern of the last two years... actually, I think they might even hold off on announcing Z a little longer. I could be wrong, but maybe an E3 announcement or something shortly after? Considering how much less lead-up ORAS has than X and Y, it'd strike me as odd to see a Spring announcement for it.

Oh God... here's the fanboy wishlist again. From top to bottom: We do not and never will need another SMG. We had two and the second one didn't do the first one any justice. For the love of all the beans, please do not make an SMG3. Make a /new/ Mario game that we haven't seen before. Bring back the collect-a-thon in a big way!

Metroid U may be at E3, but I'm kinda doubting it. I'm expecting a 2017 release, if Retro is on the case, or maybe 2016, if they got someone else to do it. Either way, an E3 2015 presence may happen, or they may save it for later. Or they may not have anything to show for it, yet. (And it will not be a Prime game. This is for sure.)

Metroid 3D I could actually see. Who was it we thought might make this? I'm afraid I'm not a big Metroid fan, so I really don't know who would be in on this one. The point is that it's a strong possibility and E3 2015 would be the time to show it off, if not sooner.

I still don't believe Pokken Fighters is actually a thing. If they ARE working on a Poke'mon fighting game, that may be a project name, or the may just want to ensure that no one beats them to that name, in case they wanna use it later. Again, TRADEMARKING A NAME MEANS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.

Animal Crossing U... honestly, given its track record, it's pretty shocking we don't already have a date for it. I'd be surprised if they waited until E3 2015 to unveil it, though. Maybe the December or February Direct with a (hopeful) Summer release date?

Paper Mario U will happen. I kinda doubt it'll be at E3 2015, unless it's announced before that, but I honestly wouldn't hold my breath for it, any time soon.

Let's get one thing straight... There is absolutely no reason whatsoever to think that there will be a second Zelda on the 3DS. Maybe MM3D, but there's absolutely no reason at all to think we'll be getting a new Zelda game on 3DS. Am I saying it's impossible? No. Not in the slightest. They might not even wait 'til E3 to announce it, but then we get to another point: the entire Zelda team is busy with Zelda U. I wouldn't expect another Zelda announcement until 2016, but a late 2015 announcement wouldn't be too surprising.

While we're on this note cough cough*SMTxFE*cough Excuse me! But seriously, they had absolutely nothing to show in January 2013 and we haven't seen it, since. I don't think it's been scrapped, but this pause makes a lot of us nervous. I think we may very likely see this by E3 next year, if not AT E3 next year.

Not really, no. This is about how many game announcements we got over the last year. And most of these have been hinted on it.

Okay, let me get one thing straight, I am not one of those people that are clamoring for a Majora's Mask remake, I really don't care what they do with it. But I think it's going to happen nonetheless, there's been some hints towards it. And I think it would be more fair if they put it on 3DS as opposed to Wii U as a follow up to OoT.

Not just two years, Japan has followed this pattern for much longer (since Platinum at least), the game is announced in the spring and releases in the fall. So unless next year is an off year, Z/XY2 being announced next Spring is a virtual inevitability.

I'd prefer an original game as well, but since Nintendo is working on another Mario game and they've said they'd love to make another Galaxy game, you can put two and two together and guess that that's probably what they're working on. Besides, if they had any ounce of creativity on what to do for a completely new collectathon Mario game, don't you think we would've seen that instead of 3D World?

They're definitely on the way, it seems more like they're waiting for the right time to announce them. Considering the timing, I don't think it'll take them more than a year to get to the point where they're not ready to show something off. Also, I don't think Retro is working on this one, so I don't think it will be released in 2017. I'm thinking there's probably going to be a 2015 announcement and a 2016 release.

Miyamoto recently said that they have ideas for a new Zelda game for 3DS. But now that I see it, they're just "ideas", so you're right that it probably won't be announced this year, probably next year.

Yet we get Spirit Tracks while Skyward Sword was in development.

Also, "...we have ideas for Nintendo 3DS which we have not announced yet, so I hope you will look forward to them." - Miyamoto on the topic of The Legend of Zelda. Sounds like a new game to me. You can debate that all you want. But the conclusion that "There is absolutely no reason whatsoever to think that there will be a second Zelda on the 3DS" is asinine. There is reason to believe.

I'm not expecting any games to be announced this year, I don't really see why they wouldn't be announced at E3 if they still have games left. E3 can be used to build up hype and outside of Nintendo fans, directs can't do that. I do think though maybe soon we will see teasers for retro's new project and next level's project/s. Not sure if this is right but don't next level have two development teams? So we might see "catalyst" and Luigi's mansion U at some point, probably at next E3 tbh

As for the Super Mario Galaxy 3 rumour, I looked around to see what I could find, because I did remember that they did not specifically talked about a direct sequel (as in Mario Galaxy 3), but more about a sequel to the 3D Mario games in general (as how Sunshine is a sequel to 64, and Galaxy a sequel to Sunshine).

Koizumi said: ''I don’t know if we can consider Super Mario 64 as an open world game, but I think Super Mario Sunshine is more consistent with that definition because of the city and entire worlds to explore. Our main standpoint with Super Mario is to ensure that players always know where to go ... However, if a very large number of players expressed the desire for a more open Mario, we would take that request very seriously.''

And Miyamoto had the following to say: ''Now that's not to say that we may not make more games in the vein of Super Mario Galaxy in the future. I'd certainly like to consider that possibility. But our goal right now is to expose as many people as possible to this type of gameplay in a 3D World. And I think what we've come up with here is the most balanced system in which to do this."

Whilst a sequel to the (open) 3D Mario series is still a possibility, Nintendo doesn't seem to be very interested in such game as of now. I don't know what to expect, I would like to see one though.

@bolt-strike So I actually went and looked through the recent Mario Sports titles. CAMELOT only handles Mario Tennis and Mario Golf, for the most part. Square Enix could do another Mario Basketball or Sports Mix or something else, but I wouldn't expect much out of whatever they make and considering the state they're in with FFXV and KH3, I don't think we'll be seeing them work on a Mario Sports title, any time soon. Mario Super Sluggers was developed by a joint team of Bandai Namco Games and Now Productions. Bandai seems a bit busy, but I could see them possibly putting aside a small team to work on it when Smash nears completion. And then there's Next Level. Next Level hasn't done anything since Luigi's Mansion, so we know they're up to something. The question is what? Mario Strikers U is possible. I'm not holding my breath, but it would be nice to have another good online game for the Wii U. Another Punch-Out!! isn't out of the realm of possibility, either, as the last one did come out fairly early in the Wii's life cycle, IIRC.

So in conclusion to that, Sluggers is possible but unlikely and Strikers is possible but up in the air.

As for "Galaxy 3" do keep in mind that this is Nintendo. They do a couple things that most studios don't. Nintendo very rarely starts with a premise. They start with gameplay and build around it to make the game they want. In the case of sequels, they do start with a vague idea, but it's still wide open to become its own thing. For instance, do you know how many times Nintendo (or Capcom) has said "You know? I think we'd like to port Zelda (original, LttP, etc) to this handheld. And then wound up with a COMPLETELY different game? Key examples: the Oracle games and Link Between Worlds.

As for 3D World, they made 3D World because they wanted to make a title very similar to 3D Land and put it on the Wii U. This by no means implies that they're out of ideas for a collect-a-thon game. More likely is that they don't think a collect-a-thon will do so well, but as Galaxy was the last real collect-a-thon they did, I don't see why they would think that. Even so, we'll just have to wait and see.

I still don't think we'll get Metroid U and Metroid 3D in the same year, but what do I know? I don't really follow Metroid and I do know it's possible, as they'd likely be developed by two completely different teams and have next to nothing to do with each other. That said, I agree, we do know it's on the way. We just don't know when.

And @brewsky Yeah, but this is a different case, because I wasn't aware Miyamoto said that. I still don't think it'll be on the slate for E3 next year, and if it is, it'll likely get a pre-announcement (because it doesn't seem like Nintendo holds on to their 3DS titles for big announcements, anymore). Mind you, Skyward Sword is nowhere near the scale of Zelda U. I don't think they'll be splitting up their team, especially not with them likely being in one of the heaviest dev stages, right now. But Nintendo has proven me (and pretty much everyone else) wrong before, so who knows?

Unexpected as always.. Don't they usually release a Direct at the same time for both Japan and the west?

Most Directs do sync up, yeah, but there's no telling whether a Japanese Direct means we'll get one over here, too or if we're just gonna be waiting on it.

Well Next Level Games has been commenting that Nintendo is giving them "better and better games for them to work with", so I don't think they're working on Strikers U. So if that's our best chance for a Mario Sports game, it probably won't happen this year.

Well remember that Galaxy 2 was made because they had leftover ideas from Galaxy 1 that they couldn't fit in, so they would probably take a similar approach to Galaxy 3 and apply new gameplay ideas from the Gamepad to the Galaxy formula. From those interviews, it sounds more like they view 3D World as a better flagship title than Galaxy 3, not that they don't like the collectathon formula or they don't have any new ideas.

I don't think so. It seems like they view both styles of gameplay as two sides of the same coin, I don't think they'd release them too far apart.

collect-a-thon is the worst possible mechanic. (It is an excuse for poor length and low overall difficulty).

Funnily enough though like always there is a counter example. Wario Land 4 is great even with the collectables it has because its necessary for the rush back to have a look around the level first.

I disagree, it adds an element of exploration to the gameplay. I'd love to see Nintendo make another collectathon platformer again.

Come to think of it, I don't think Galaxy would be a good implementation of the collectathon style because it's not as explorable, I'd like to see something more like 64/Sunshine. Particularly something that's larger and more open world.
