A mix of both really. Late at night I'll often just use the game pad and not even fire up the tv. I like vc games pretty well on the game pad as well. Also, I'll play rated M games like Darksiders on the game pad if the kids are running around. It's easier to hide mature content from them. Also, it's cool to have my 5 year old watch fan boy and chum chum on the game pad via Netflix while I watch what I want. Mario bros U is a great family experience on the big tv.
It really depends - sometimes I'll play my Wii U while watching a movie and the GamePad is great for that - so when I'm multitasking entertainment its awesome - also playing in bed is a nice thing.
Unless the television is taken, which happens somewhat often during the evening, i'll play on the big screen. I really love the option to play on the Game Pad though, it's very convenient.

Mainly TV since I don't want my 47" 1080p to feel left out. Also I like having the game stocked with other useful info to glance on (MHTU, Injustice, Batman, etc.)
I do off-tv play with Monster Hunter Packet Relay Tool alot with my 3ds so I'm not sure if that counts.
A dying animal struggles, thrashes and howls in protest as its life torn from it. To see this in action, watch Animal Planet. The same thing happens when a video game is or isn't released. To see this in action, stay here.

TV, since my Wii U is permanently located in my living room (no other HD Televisions in my house). And for some reason, whenever I leave my living room my Gamepad screws up. The farthest I've ever gotten was in the kitchen on a chair located directly on the other side of the wall where my Wii U is placed. My room is simply out of the question.
The same thing happens to me. If the signal could go further, I'd probably go everywhere in my house.
I play on the gamepad more than I thought I would. I don't even bother to turn my TV on unless I have to. ZombieU and the Yoshi Attraction on Nintendoland are two instances that come to mind.
