Bingo. They need to get over Super Mario Bros 3 already and accept that they made other good Mario games that they can take inspiration from.

As far as this new game goes, one thing I'd really like are new bosses. No Koopalings, no Boom Boom/Pom Pom, actual boss variety instead. That was good in the Galaxy games.

it reminds me of during the GCN era when every game had to force Mario Sunshine references down people's throats to make up for Mario Sunshine not being as well received as 64 (arguably same with Luigi's Mansion). And amusingly how most people stopped hating on those games when they stopped doing that. Mario Power Tennis is the first, and I think the only, game that I disliked exclusively because of how blatant this was.

To be fair, I don't think that was just a Mario Sunshine thing.

Back in the SNES days, Nintendo shoved Super Mario World references in everywhere. Like the educational games and Super Mario Kart (Donut Plains, Vanilla Lake, Choco Island, etc).

In the Nintendo 64 days, everything looked like and took inspiration from Mario 64. Mario Kart 64 used the same style, Mario Party used the same style and characters, Smash Bros used that version of Mario, etc.

In the Gamecube days, it was all Mario Sunshine and Luigi's Mansion references. Mario Kart Double Dash, Mario Party 4 and 5, Mario Power Tennis...

In the DS days, everything was based on Mario 64 DS. Like how Mario Kart DS had Tick Tock Clock and the Mario 64 DS bosses or how New Super Mario Bros used mini games, models and enemies from the game.

In the Wii era it was eventually all Mario Galaxy style. Not so much for Smash Bros, but definitely so for Mario Kart Wii and the like.

Nintendo always does this with their Mario spinoffs. Always. They'll probably start shoving in references to 3D Land and Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon soon enough...

I would prefer a more traditional 3d area type game like Mario 64, I found Galaxy 1 & 2's camera made me feel quite ill as you ran round upside down and back to front.

Isn't it obvious that Falco Lombardi is actually a parrot?

Hopefully it is 1080p X 30 FPS.

I'd prefer 720p at 60 frames per second if that's the best performance possible. A lower resolution irks me far less than a lower frame rate. Of course, 1080p at 60 frames per second would be ideal.

Galaxy's camera was quite divisive, but in terms of moving the genre forward and trying new things (a justifiable agenda when you have the credentials) is was worth a go. It's funny that we describe it as a camera, when it was a removal of a camera. I also felt my stomach flipping around, and a sense of slight disorientation from time to time.

Thing is… I think I liked it.

It was a very different feel to Sunshine with different merits, but on balance I enjoyed it. I enjoyed not having camera work as an in-game job, and as a result it felt like a more free-flowing Mario game.

Honestly, I'm absolutely stumped as to how they will top the Galaxy games in quality. In terms of what they will actually do to justify the series entry - I'd fully expect dual screen trickery.

Whether that's going to beat Galaxy is another question. What's great is that it is - apparently - not far off. That means HD Galaxies a year or 2 after. No way Nintendo will release those while Mario 3D U has sales momentum.

They will look spectacular.

I hope it is harder than 3D Land. I love 3D Land, but it is a little too easy for a 3D Mario. One of the things I liked about SMG2 was the difficulty. It was just right, not too hard but not too easy. So yeah, I hope for an SMG2 esque difficulty level.

@Innit
I think the camera system works very well in Super Mario Galaxy. The camera is the one thing Super Mario Sunshine did terribly wrong. There are parts of that game that are difficult only because you can't get a good angle on Mario. Mario shouldn't be about battling with a camera. The camera system ought to be as seamless as possible, and Super Mario Galaxy did a tremendously good job at that (I think it's even better in Super Mario Galaxy 2). Now the whole upside down thing is something that just came along with the whole gravity theme of the game. I'd be surprised if that made much of a return in the next Mario game.

As much as I love Super Mario Galaxy (it's certainly a top-class game), I think people overrate it by a bit. I don't think it will be as hard as people think for Nintendo to make an equally as well crafted game. Now they might not be able to come up with as good a twist to the mechanics as gravity alteration. That's the sort of creative thinking almost no one gets a reliable handle on (though I'd be surprised if Nintendo hasn't already thought of dozens of ideas for some time now). But Nintendo understands good game design tremendously well, and their track record with the 3D Mario games is incredible.

I am at total peace of mind knowing that the developers behind the Mario Galaxy games are handling this newest installment. The Galaxy games were amazing, but as some have mentioned I'd really dislike Galaxy 3 (Ok that's not completely true, if they manage to pull out new and interesting stuff it might work). As far as what I've heard, Nintendo has confirmed that they're going for something new and original, thus debunking any rumors or ideas regarding a new installment to the Galaxy series. Not to mention of course that they tend to start a whole new idea with every new console.

Personally, as long as the game is creative, original and enjoyable I'll be all for it. Even if it was set in a toilet. (Ok probably not).

If I had one wish though, it'd be that they go in the Super Mario Sunshine direction, meaning I'd really appreciate if they could set aside all the mindless critics and go for something new, introduce a whole new mechanic upon which the game is based, and give us a fun game that we will spend months playing over and over again. Which is admittedly what I did with Sunshine lmao.

So be honest: Do you guys expect this to be mind blowing like Galaxy? or something like 3D Land?

Mind blowing. 3D Land was on a handheld system, so Nintendo couldn't go that far in making it all fancy and mind blowing due to the technical limitations. But on the Wii U? Yeah, the next Mario game will be just plain amazing.

I hope so. People should stop hoping for a direct SM64 2. It isn't going to happen. The DS remake is the closest we are going to get to a proper SM64 2.

I hope that they will return to Mushroom Kingdom. A "real" sequel to Super Mario 64, so to say.

However I guess i would like it even more if Nintendo showed something entirely new and different that i didnt ever realised that i wanted.
... Like Steampunk Mario bros or something haha ; )

I think it's unpredictable lately nintendo seems to be bouncing between innovation, formula recycling with a few tweaks and nostalgia.
so it might be just another mario galaxy, a completely new thing that will blow everyone's mind, or something in the lines of 3D land(mixing elements of the classic mario with 3D gameplay)
and though I'm tired of mario galaxy. all of the possibilities are good things nintendo's games only disapoint when they fail to reach the expectations and even those times they tend to not be really bad.

goodbyes are a sad part of life but for every end there's a new beggining so one must never stop looking forward to the next dawn

It won't be, the galaxy series was to show off some motion controls, this time around they are making a game that will show off the gamepad, so its something original
