I now kinda regret my free download of Castlevania III yesterday since that looks too frustrating for me to bother with. I'll probably just play the early levels repeatedly.

No its great and you can beat with some practice Sypha is great if you are first timer trying to beat the game because her spells overpower many bosses. Yes it can be tough, but with some practice it can be beaten. Don't lose heart this is one of the best NES games out there.

the game (CV III) is veeeery hard, but honestly it is great as well.
instead of sylphia i'd go with alucard though, he makes skipping parts of a level possible ;)

This game is soooo worth the hard difficulty level. Just use the Wii suspend feature to take regular breaks when you feel frustrated. Once that goes away try again and you'll probably beat the area you struggled in.

That was nice. I've only played Castlevania IV ever; more recently on the VC. The difficulty curve seems to be better, but I got stuck at an impossible jumping point near the end and threw in the towel. Kind of cured me of interest, but for you guys I'll take a bullet and get the WiiWare game next week for some First Impressions. Hopefully they'll have remembered the people who aren't gaming masochists!

Don't give up Bass XO! I had no problem beating Castlevania III with all 3 characters when I was younger. I'm sure you'll be able to do it. It really is one of the best games on the NES so just stick with it and I'm sure you'll enjoy it.:)

I'll have to watch his sendup of III later (at work now), but I've seen his review of II/Simon's Quest before, and it's as amusing as it is accurate. III/Dracula's Curse, however, is truly a great game, and justifies every bit of its difficulty. Don't be scared off!

Castlevania III is one of the greatest Castlevania games, it may be a little difficult but far from impossible, i beat it when i was a kid back when it came out for the NES and i still play it today.

bleh
Simon's Quest and 64/LoD are the only Castlevania games I don't hate. I find I and III boring as hell. Haven't played IV or the highly regarded SotN.

Simon's Quest and 64 are you're favorites??? That's pretty much the polar opposite of myself (and many Castlevania fans, I believe).

Once again, my top 3 Castlevania games (all tied, in no particular order): III/Dracula's Curse, SoTN, DraculaX (TG-16) / Rondo of Blood

All three Castlevania games on the NES are Awesome the NERD just suck at playing them and IGN seem to agree with my theory:

Super Castlevania IV was my first Castlevania game, which probably explains why I can't seem to get into the NES vania games.

tbh Simon's Quest was just really badly explained. Having to guess at the button combination to activate crystals was kind of frustrating....I got it without an instruction booklet way before the internet was accessible to me (or even around to my recollection....back when it was AOL, Compuserve, and some third one I can't recall...) so there was literally no way to know how to activate crystals even if you picked up where to use them given those translations. Again, it was fun, but the enemy AI logic was a significant step down from the first game and considerably worse than it was in the third.

Sweet, I've been waiting for him to put up this review! Even though he already did part 2.

I'm interested to hear what he has to say about Super Castlevania 4, since that's my personal favorite in the series. I suspect that one will be up next week since he's doing this series for Halloween.

Castlevania is great, excellent music, and high but enjoyable difficulty.

Simon's Quest isn't so great, excellent music, but zero difficulty, and a FAQ is pretty much required.

Dracula's Curse is great, but it's too hard for me. Most of the levels are about one and a half to twice the length of the originals, and you start with one less life IIRC, tis too tough. (Atleast using only Trevor, as I do)

Which one is better? I just downloaded the second but now all these websites are giving it terrible ratings compared the third.

Prodigy was the third one.

Those were the days, eh? Up all night downloading pictures and you'd only see four women.
