Topic: Why did the NEO GEO only provide fighters?

A question I ask simply because the hardware had so much power and potential to create the best 2D games in existence...

Fighters are nice an all...but if you paid a load of money for it, you expect Arcade experiences similar to what SEGA had in their arcades. (don't mention Metal Slug please, they pretty much made too many of those)

What is the largest game on the game anyway? It's be interesting to see just how big these cartridges could go and see whether it could port a Playstation/Saturn era 2D game.

Anyway, discuss.

It was based on an arcade machine, so naturally it would have a lot of Arcade games. The biggest game was probably for the Neo Geo CD, which saw fewer ports. Probably Samurai Shodown RPG. The Largest Neo Geo Game, though, was King of Fighters 2003, at about 90 MB (716 Megs).

I think good Neo Geo games that are not fighters (or Metal Slug) have to be:
Spinmaster
League Bowling (I wish this game was on the Virtual Console)
Street Hoops
Baseball Stars 2
Blue's Journey
Ironclad
Magical Drop 2
Magical Drop 3
Neo Turf Masters
Ninja Commando
Top Hunter: Roddy & Cathy

Not just fighters. It also had some of the best shooters around. Not sure why it was mostly just those two Genres.
I guess it was just more of an arcade type system. I never had the chance to play any of these games as a kid.
My parents weren't about to shell out the 500 dollars it cost to own a Neo Geo when it was new. The VC opens up a whole new world of old school gaming I never imagined!

I can see why the fighting genre was popular as it was released on the arcade, but surely even those gamers who had the money wanted more variety and (to an extent), more games.

It had like 150+ games in it's 14 year life span (almost 10 a year), which is really low for a console (even if it cost loads of money!)

In a way, I kind of wished that SNK dropped the price as the hardware aged on into the late 90's...I sure it would have had loads of Arcade ports from Namco and Capcom if they priced it accordingly later in its lifetime...as I think it's a shame most of the games can be bought at a budget on the PS2/Wii these days...

Shame for who? Now we get cheap games that used to cost an arm and a leg. I say rejoice!

Also, you understand that SNK died pumping money into the Neo Geo, right? Also, on a random note, I just realized there's a Last Blade collection on the PS2. Now if only they could port it to the Xbox, my life would be complete.

Lol. I worded it wrongly.

I mean it's a shame that they made the games so expensive, only for them to sell them so cheaply these days when they could have been still in business and made MORE games and money for it.

You know what would've been awesome on the NG? A full fledged RPG...the memory size would have been awesome and had the potential to port Lunar Star without load times!?!

Since the NG had the same processing chip as the Mega Drive (Motorola 68000 for those who don't know), why weren't arcade conversions from those games? (other then SEGA of course)

Correct me if I am wrong but the Neo Geo was based and marketed as having an arcade machine at home. It would make sense that most of the games are fighter games since at the time games like Street Fighter 2 and Mortal Kombat were all the rage in the arcades when Neo Geo game out.

As for having other genres I am not sure since I never owned one myself I just saw them and played them at stores like Toys R Us.

It was, but so was the Mega Drive.

It's just a shame that they didn't try different genres with the same Arcade experience.

Well, most people regard Fatal Fury a SF II clone, while the game was released before SF II even came out.
The man behind the first Street Fighter, Takashi Nishiyama, perfected his work on the Neo Geo, while Capcom hijacked his work by even competing him. Even tough i like Street Fighter II, i prefer all of the SNK fighters over it.

They did make lots of other arcade-style games on the Neo Geo. I'm not sure where the idea that the Neo Geo "only" has fighters came from. There are plenty of great puzzle games, sports games, side-scrolling beat 'em ups and shmups on it.

Some examples:

  • Twinkle Star Sprites (SO good)
  • Metal Slug 1-5
  • Aero Fighters/Sonic Wings 2 & 3
  • Puzzle Bobble 1 & 2
  • Top Hunter
  • Blazing Star
  • Pulstar
  • Ninja Commando
  • Sengoku 3
  • Windjammers
  • Super Dodge Ball

I'm adding Zupapa! and Nightmare in the Dark to these lists.

I didn't mean it as an absolue term, I mean it as "pretty much 8/10 games on the Neo geo have fighting games", the list is a good example of non-fighting games but even that list is pretty small.

It's not the complete list silly. If you actually look at the complete list of games, you'll see a lot of shmups, sports games, puzzle games, run 'n' guns, and even a few platformers and Beat 'em ups and arcade games. In fact, I just went through the whole list and found only about 46 fighting games...out of 154.

I know, but as Mickeymac said it's not a complete list by any means. I agree it seems to be a pretty common belief that Neo Geo has mostly fighters or that the only good games on it are fighters.

In truth there aren't all that many games on the system anyway. Many of those fighters you're referring to are just long lines of sequels. To answer the topic title, fighters were excellent cash cows for SNK so of course they continued the popular ones. A list of some of the better-known and respected fighter series on the Neo Geo:

  • Art of Fighting 1-3
  • Fatal Fury 1-3
  • Garou: Mark of the Wolves
  • King of Fighters 94-2003
  • Last Blade 1 & 2
  • Samurai Shodown 1-5
  • Waku Waku 7

7 series isn't that many. I'd consider all 11 series I listed previously as 8/10 or above. Combine those with weirdproq's list and GeminiSaint's suggestions and you get 23 good non-fighter series on the Neo Geo.

There's quite a few good shooters on there along with some good puzzle games.

I am not questioning the quality, I'm sure each series appeals individually, but 8 series with about 3 to 5 sequels is pretty much most of the library and I just wanted to ask if the console itself is more capable of any other genre that hasn't been done on the system? (Racing games, Simulations, RPGs and even really fast paced action games that require reflexes).

This does however, give me an idea of whether the tech inside the NG can be utilised in programming to find any good tricks like the Mega Drives dithering and the TG16's VRAM draw rate when the current lines are being drawn.

The Neo Geo actually had a horse racing game in Japan called Stakes Winner 2. There was 3 racing games for the Neo Geo Called Riding Hero, Thrash Rally, and Over Top.

That's interesting to hear. It makes sense too if those customers were businessmen too who could afford it.
