@Wavinator The Genny had a better processor for more advanced animations and larger sprite handling and it also had a more vast colour palette over the SNES if my memory serves me correctomondo.

You've got it backwards for the color palette. The SNES trounced the Genesis in that area which is why Genesis games usually looked washed out in comparison to SNES games.

My experience with both consoles had the opposite effect. I found the Genny had more vibrant colour with darker tones while the SNES had lighter tone and always looked like the brightness was up too much with a washed out dull palette. This was on the same TV with the same settings and I could switch between consoles on the fly

Even on the VC using my backlit LED HDTV I see the Genny has better colours over the SNES.

Back in my day we didn't need any fancy sound as long as the blippin' was a bloppin' it was all good... Chakan the Foreverman had the best 16bit music and was 50 times more challenging than anything on the easy gamed SNES

I will always stand by the Genesis because imo it just had the better library of games.

Gunstar Heroes Vs. Contra III: The alien Wars?

Contra III. Gunstar Heroes is the only Treasure game I'd call overrated. It's good, but the power-up system is annoying, since you absolutely need certain power-ups to finish a level, but the difficulty is so crazy it can be hard to keep that weapon, and of course weapon drops are random. I greatly prefer Gunstar Super Heroes, which did the whole game the right way.

Genesis graphics were bad so they had to "blast process" them past your eyes so you couldn't focus on the detail (or lack there of).

Some other things:

  • Genesis had a pallet of 512 colors and of those only 62 could be displayed at once. SNES on the other hand had 32,768 colors and could display 256 at once.
  • The SNES didn't need peripherals.
  • The sound chip comparison: SNES had a SONY Digital Signal Processor vs. a T.I. Programmable Sound Generator.

Overall I do like the Genesis, but the SNES is timeless where the Genesis is just "meh" and the majority of the retro community agrees. Where is the evidence you ask? Well, just compare the price of the games and systems today.

That's not really evidence of anything other than higher demand. If the current price of games=the quality of the system then the Saturn and Dreamcast were terrible consoles.

Agreed that price is a result of demand and/or rarity. Sure there are some high priced games that are junk (like a complete copy of Donkey Kong Jr. Math for instance) for reasons like rarity or being a novelty but I view the overall trend of the price of games in general. There is a higher demand for SNES games as evidenced by the higher price. Why is the retro community paying higher prices and creating a higher demand for very common games like Donkey Kong Country and Super Mario Kart vs. the less common but cheaper Genesis games like Shinobi III and Strider? Could it be due to the perceived quality and value the retro community in general holds for the games?

And this I'm just going to write off as fanboyism. I don't know how you could label either system from that time as "just meh" and price is your justification as to why. And it's not that Genesis needed those add-ons Sega has just always tried to push the envelope and do but more only problem is they try to do it too soon when the technology isnt there yet.

More people had SNES = more nostalgia for SNES = more demand for SNES games. It's as simple as that.

Right, people knew SNES was better back then.

Oh jeez, I can label the Genesis however I want too because I remember experiencing the 4th video game generation and I also currently have a Genesis and multiple games. A lot of things make up price, including perceived market value.

So I assuming by that statement you think I dont remember the 16-bit era? Because to answer that, yes I remember it very well, I remember the day I got my Genesis with Sonic the Hedgehog. But at this point Im writing this off as being too much of an up hill battle due to it being on a Nintendo fan site after all.

it's quite simple really... i've got a lot of retro consoles and after all is said and done, it's all down to the games. The SNES library of games is much bigger, more diverse and of higher quality, most notably the first-party titles. People still play those games, thats the reason they are still cherished and valuable.

I don't know much about you other than you like the Genesis over the SNES and that you like the Buffalo Bills. So what do you say we call a truce and leave it at the fact you like the Genesis more and I like the SNES more but we still like the other systems though just not as much?

As I said before. I think its just whatever you grew up having at that time and thats where the preferences will be found.

I wouldn't give a crap even if I did. It's all about how good the games are man.

The Genesis has a lot more games that I liked. The SNES barely had 10 games I liked that weren't stuck in Japan - U.N. Squadron, Mega Man X, Super Metroid, Demon's Crest, Breath of Fire II, Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia, ActRaiser, Secret of Evermore, and Chrono Trigger. I've got over 50 Genesis games that I've enjoyed, and most of them I never played as a kid. No nostalgia, just the type of games I enjoy.
