i was around 10, 11-ish when the sega/nintendo 16 bit wars took place. the rivalry was heated at times but back then we had characters in the likes of mario and sonic to compare to and games to contest with. rather than state-of-the art graphics.

and the likes of capcom, sega, konami had great games out too, unlike today.

Though I was born in 1996 and could have easily slipped into a "non-nintendo" personality, i'm thankful I didn't, in fact, I actually grew up with a Game Boy in 2005 (yeah), then a Game Boy Advance, and then a DS Lite, until I got an Xbox in 2009, I played games like Grand Theft Auto IV or Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection for awhile (though I do like to play more of Collection), but then got a Wii in 2010, then a 3DS in 2011. While I do revisit my Xbox 360 sometimes, (Banjo-Kazooie ftw), I still liked Nintendo since they seem to have many genres to interact well with.

I too was born 1996 and grew up with the gamecube and gba. But now a days I have to say snes. Better hard ware and games. Today im in a tough knot between sony and nintendo. Sony is kinda better but then I remember my childhood.

The Genesis still beats out the N64 and Gamecube. ;)
Genesis did what NintenDidn't and gave us tons of sprite based titles(ya, limmitations of the hardware i know, shuddup' :p ) instead of everything being a big polygon riddled 3D flash fest. The N64 and GCN era were dark times for retro gamers such as myself, but looking past that both consoles obviously had their selection of radical gems.

Also, Why is it that the Disney games look better on the genesis in comparison to the SNES versions? Sure the SNES versions boast superior color, nicer music and the like, but the Genesis versions of titles like Alladin for example just look a lot more cartoon-like in the animation department. Different developers perhaps?

@Wavinator The Genny had a better processor for more advanced animations and larger sprite handling :P and it also had a more vast colour palette over the SNES ;) if my memory serves me correctomondo.

I love the genesis but the SNES did have bigger color palette. Genesis did had a much faster processor though.

You've got it backwards for the color palette. The SNES trounced the Genesis in that area which is why Genesis games usually looked washed out in comparison to SNES games.

My experience with both consoles had the opposite effect. I found the Genny had more vibrant colour with darker tones while the SNES had lighter tone and always looked like the brightness was up too much with a washed out dull palette. This was on the same TV with the same settings and I could switch between consoles on the fly ;)

Even on the VC using my backlit LED HDTV I see the Genny has better colours over the SNES.

The Fox is right.
The Angry Video Game nerd even had a comparison video with the SNES & Genesis Spec sheets shown together and there were about 10 or so different things where the SNES completely outshined the genesis included the amazing amount of colors the SNES could produce. The Genesis was 'only' superior with having a faster processor.

Other than that, the genesis sound chip sounds like some muffled rock infused gritty & dark synthasized hell party. lol ' The Haunting' music sounds like it was created in the depths of hell. :p Streets of Rage 1 & 2 however have phenomenal music, along with Rocket Knight Adventures, Castle of Illusion and the like ect ect. But, the SNES just has a more colorful, cheery, epic, magical & whimsical orchestrated feel which i absolutly love. Totaly different sounds and both are unique in their own ways.

After being amazed and blown by the SNES's launch titles, my poor old genny in comparison felt like a complete depressing dated dud in comparison. :p
I couldn't even stand playing The Genesis version of Street Fighter II. The music, SFX and color pallette were severely lacking...

Contra III. Gunstar Heroes is the only Treasure game I'd call overrated. It's good, but the power-up system is annoying, since you absolutely need certain power-ups to finish a level, but the difficulty is so crazy it can be hard to keep that weapon, and of course weapon drops are random. I greatly prefer Gunstar Super Heroes, which did the whole game the right way.

Genesis graphics were bad so they had to "blast process" them past your eyes so you couldn't focus on the detail (or lack there of). :P

Some other things:

  • Genesis had a pallet of 512 colors and of those only 62 could be displayed at once. SNES on the other hand had 32,768 colors and could display 256 at once.
  • The SNES didn't need peripherals.
  • The sound chip comparison: SNES had a SONY Digital Signal Processor vs. a T.I. Programmable Sound Generator.

Overall I do like the Genesis, but the SNES is timeless where the Genesis is just "meh" and the majority of the retro community agrees. Where is the evidence you ask? Well, just compare the price of the games and systems today.

To blessed to be stressed.
80's music makes me feel fabulous.
I miss Japanese games, the good stuff... Games that are imaginative, have good and unique gameplay, a great soundtrack, and replay value.

That's not really evidence of anything other than higher demand. If the current price of games=the quality of the system then the Saturn and Dreamcast were terrible consoles.

Agreed that price is a result of demand and/or rarity. Sure there are some high priced games that are junk (like a complete copy of Donkey Kong Jr. Math for instance) for reasons like rarity or being a novelty but I view the overall trend of the price of games in general. There is a higher demand for SNES games as evidenced by the higher price. Why is the retro community paying higher prices and creating a higher demand for very common games like Donkey Kong Country and Super Mario Kart vs. the less common but cheaper Genesis games like Shinobi III and Strider? Could it be due to the perceived quality and value the retro community in general holds for the games?

To blessed to be stressed.

More people had SNES = more nostalgia for SNES = more demand for SNES games. It's as simple as that.

And this I'm just going to write off as fanboyism. I don't know how you could label either system from that time as "just meh" and price is your justification as to why. And it's not that Genesis needed those add-ons Sega has just always tried to push the envelope and do but more only problem is they try to do it too soon when the technology isnt there yet.

Oh jeez, I can label the Genesis however I want too because I remember experiencing the 4th video game generation and I also currently have a Genesis and multiple games. A lot of things make up price, including perceived market value.

So I assuming by that statement you think I dont remember the 16-bit era? Because to answer that, yes I remember it very well, I remember the day I got my Genesis with Sonic the Hedgehog. But at this point Im writing this off as being too much of an up hill battle due to it being on a Nintendo fan site after all.
