I'd say that Donkey Kong Country Returns surpassed the already brilliant titles in that series.
Galaga Legions is another triumph in my opinion...

Any other examples that spring to mind?

A lot of people will disagree with me but I feel like the Mario Galaxy games were better than Mario 64.

When I close my eyes, I see pixilated blood.

I agree too, I was never a big fan of Super Mario 64, because even my favorite enemy 'The Goomba' looked awful in that game.

Still haven't played that title... looks like fun tough, I liked the first (NES) Punch-Out!!

Panzer Dragoon Orta was another gem that far surpassed the previous Panzer Dragoon games (the first title was even unlockable in Orta) in my opinion...

Tekken 2 is another one that springs to mind...

Animal Crossing DS was the best in the series. Though it lost the real holidays and nes games portability is great. Hopefully the wiiu and 3ds games can share data.

[Virtua Fighter 4] was better than [Virtua Fighter 2] which was slightly better than [Virtua Fighter]... in my opinion that is...

Soul Caliber 2 surpassed Soul Blade and Soul Caliber any day. In fact I never even heard of the series until Soul Caliber 2 came out (since I didnt own a Dreamcast back in the day) Everyone that I talked to was surprised that I never played let alone heard of the Soul Caliber series, but I am pretty sure that I wasnt the only one.

I found Soul Calibur IV also to be quite great. However, these cameos annoy me through the series, except the Soul Calibur II one...
Personally, I think that Soul Calibur was better than Soul Blade / Edge, and not yet surpassed in terms of greatness...

Pretty much every Madden was better than the last.

In fact, a lot of sequels are better than the previous game. You'd have a much shorter list if you asked what sequels didn't outdo their predecessor.

I like the Johto Pokemon games a lot more than Kanto. But then, I started with Crystal.

I'd also argue that Super Mario Bros 3 was a lot better than Super Mario Bros, but they were both within a few years of each other. So I don't know if that counts. Finally, I like the content of Super Mario 64 DS more than the content of Super Mario 64 itself. I would like the game more if it wasn't for the frustrating d-pad controls, which I've heard are fixed on the 3DS.

Metroid Prime by Metroid Prime Hunters
Super Mario 64 by pretty much every single 3D Mario since
Super Mario Bros by New Super Mario Brothers
Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time by Legend of Zelda Phantom Hourglass
Chibi-Robo by Chibi-Robo Park Patrol
Mario Kart 64 by every 3D Mario Kart following it (exception being 7 as I haven't played it yet)

Turrican II and the subsequent Super Turrican. Some might argue that Mega Turrican surpassed that particular game, but I would thoroughly disagree with them...
