Impossible for me to choose between and SNES and N64 as favorites. I have to have them both which is why they are both ranked #1!

1. SNES - Blew me away when I played Super Mario World, Pilotwings and Super Mario Kart. Many games on this system are my all time favorites. King of RPGs in my opinion. Most of its games hold up extremely well today. Super easy to pick up and play. Absolutely fantastic console that will probably never ever be surpassed in my eyes. All-timefavorite game: EarthBound

1. N64 - Blew me away even more than anything I've ever seen with Super Mario 64. I knew I had to have this console as soon as I played Mario 64. So many fantastic memories with this console. Best local multiplayer console of all time to me. So many quality first party titles, and the console that made Rareware the king of the 90s. Favorite N64 game: Conker's Bad Fur Day

3. GCN - Did not "wow" me as much as SNES and N64 did but still very good initial impression. I was initially very excited about this console and the hype for new games lived on throughout the first half of its life but over time I became less enthused with it. Looking back today, it was still a fantastic console with a lot of great games even if it did not match the greatness of SNES and N64 for me. Favorite game: Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker

4. DS - Great handheld, and the one handheld that made me start taking handhelds seriously. I was never big into handhelds til the DS. During its lifetime I didn't think too highly of it since it focused on touch screen gimmicks for a while. But looking back it had a very solid library and probably the best handheld library of all time. Favorite game: Kirby: Mass Attack

5. GBA - Very good handheld that could've been better had they not focused so much on SNES ports. Look, I get it, I love SNES and it was great having portable versions of many SNES games but I would've greatly preferred new original games on the GBA. Had they focused more on originbal content GBA could've very well been up there with SNES and N64 as an all time favorite. As it is, though, it still rocks, just less than it could've. Favorite game: Pokemon Emerald

6. NES - I got an NES in 1989 and had limited experience with it growing up. I only played a handful of titles back then and didn't discover many other NES games until about 10 years ago. I loved the console back when it was current, even with my very limited experience with it, but today I find it more difficult to enjoy a lot of titles as they are mostly unforgiving or have very poor controls. Still, a fantastic console for its time and without it we probably wouldn't have any other Nintendo consoles. Favorite game: Super Mario Bros. 2

7. 3DS - Initially disappointed with it, but within the last 2 years or so I began to fall in love with it. Its original content is very good but does not hold my interest like past consoles and handhelds have. However it makes up for that with having downloadable titles and Virtual Console releases. The 3D gimmick was a waste in my eyes, but at least the first party content was very good. My only hope for the next handheld is they focus a little more on ergonomics, as I find this the least comfortable handheldI I've owned. Favorite game: Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds

8. GB - I owned one as a kid, barely used it, then sold it off for a Game Gear (I don't know why). Eventually bought a GB Pocket again when Pokemon Red came out in 1998. Even still my experience with the GameBoy is mostly limited to whatever is on 3DS's virtual console. That said, some first party titles still hold up very well, though they are mostly ridiculously easy and short. A good handheld to play in short bursts rather than long play sessions. Favorite game: Super Mario Land 2

9. Wii - Leading up to its release I was super stoked for it as I hoped it would correct any mistakes Gamecube had, plus the advent of Virtual Console, motion contols and the controller attachements made me giddy with excitement. I thought for sure this console was going to be just as awesome as the SNES. I was wrong. Of course it's not a bad console. But during its lifetime I found it extremely disappointing and didn't use it much. I ended up hating the motion controls and the console itself felt too gimmicky for my tastes. Recently (within the last year or so) I have found a new appreciation for the console and began playing more of its games. However it will always be one of my least favorite consoles. Favorite game: Kirby's Epic Yarn

10. Wii U - This console never hooked me even from the time it was announced. I got one anyway despite having doubts about it. I bought a handful of titles in its life but I just never really liked it. I barely play it and I don't see my opinion of this console increasing at any point. Not a terrible console but by far my least favorite Nintendo console. Favorite game: Pikmin 3

11. GBC - I only owned a GameBoy Color for a brief time before GBA came out, and only played Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages and Seasons on it. Even years later I explored the library a bit more and found it to be extremely underwhelming. Easily my least favorite Nintendo platform. (Aside from Virtual Boy with which I have no experience) Favorite game: Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons

1 - GameCube
This is the most nostalgic console for me. I remember getting one for my 5th birthday in 2003 and loving it ever since. MK:DD, Simpsons HnR and Super Mario Sunshine were my favourite games for this console.
Heck, I still have it plugged into my spare TV in my bedroom.

2 - SNES
I wasnt around when this console was released and mainstream, but I did buy one used off of Amazon a few years back and I didn't regret it. Although it's old and the technology is VERY dated, I still loved it.

3 - Wii
I got this for my 10th birthday back in 2008. While I wasnt too impressed when first getting it, my love for this console slowly grew through time. Eventually modding it (who wouldn't?) I unlocked a whole lot more out of my white box. It's now located in my gaming room sitting snug next to my PS3.

4 - DSi
Missing out on the DS, I jumped straight to the DSi on release day and this portable really underwhelmed me.

5 - NES
While this is a classic hit, the graphics are too dated for me to actually enjoy the game without eye strain. The games are perfect, but the 8-bit era just isn't for me.

And that's my list! I own a few more Nintendo consoles, but I wanted to keep this to a top 5.

Hey!
Just some guy with a Nintendo obsession. I own a GameCube, Wii, SNES, DSi, NES, N64, 3DS and a GBAsp.
I also LOVE Steven Universe.

1. Gamecube - This console was the highlight of my childhood and it got me back into playing video games faithfully. I got this for Christmas back in 2001. I had a lot of great memories of spending hours and hours playing on it solo and with friends and family. Man, I miss those days when life was so much more simpler just being a kid lol.

2. Wii U - My initial thoughts about this console was mixed, I wasn't sure if this console was worth investing time into until I finally took a chance and got one nearly 3 years ago and haven't regretted since. In my opinion, it's everything the Wii should have been and never was. Most of the games I own I still often play and still enjoy playing.

3. Gameboy Advance/GBA SP - I got a purple GBA for my 9th birthday (Nov. 24th) back in 2001. It was my first handheld console that I owned and I instantly fell in love with it. My all time favorite game to play on it was Super Mario World with Mario Kart: Super Circuit a close second. Unfortunately someone stole it from me along with a few games (which is a long story for another day). That's how I ended up getting a GBA SP as a replacement. I remember being blown away by how much better the lighting was on the games, when I first got my purple GBA I had to use one of those weird clamshell shaped add-ons that attached to the top of the GBA and covered the screen to improve the lighting.

4. New 3DS XL - I've only had mine since October 2015, but just like my GBA I instantly fell in love with it. I haven't been disappointed in the quality of the games that I own so far and I hope to keep building up a massive library of games over the coming weeks/months/years to come.

5. Wii - I remember being excited about this console, but once I got one for Christmas 8 years ago, my excitement gradually turned into disappointment. The Wii is by far my least favorite Nintendo console. I don't know what it was, but there was just something about it where it just couldn't hold my interest like the Gamecube could back then. Now that the Wii U VC has Wii games, I'm trying to get around to buying/playing some of the ones available that I never played to see if my opinion may change after all these years.

  • I didn't include the SNES because even though it was the first Nintendo console I played on growing up, it was my sister's and I skipped the N64 generation. That was a time in my life when I just stopped playing video games for whatever strange reason. What a shame, I clearly missed out on some great games. LOL

I loved my snes and it's only really newer games that can capture that feeling of enjoyment that I originally got from the snes, so it's difficult to rank. In many ways it should be number one, but...

1st: New3DS / 3DS
2nd: Wii
3rd: GBA / Gameboy Player
4th: Gamecube (down one place because of the Wii-U HD Zelda Remakes)
5th: DS
6th: N64 (mainly because of Excitebike 64, but also 1080 & down one place because there are really really cool newer games in the genre (Disney's Pure, ATV Offroad Fury 4, MX Vs. ATV (Since MX V.s ATV Reflex), Shaun White, Amped/Stoked, SSX3/SSX (for 360) SSX Blur, 1080 Avalanche)
7th: Snes (Discounting all nostalgia and considering many of the games have remakes and ports on other systems)

For me the newer system has always improved on the older system. I initially skipped the N64 Gamecube and GBA consoles but have since purchased a game cube and an GBA Advance SP. I replaced my original NES but don't have a SNES and never have had an N64.

Backwards compatibility is a big factor.
Wii and Wii U can play much of the best NES and SNES games so I have a hard time ranking NES higher than Wii U even.

If I was to rank on Nostalgia and memories of positive experiences.

1. NES just because it was my first console that was mine and video game culture was just different back then. It was seen as a toy for kids and obtuse Japanes games with horrid translations and word of mouth on good games and strategies going around the school yard. I also got mine early on so I was a cool kid just by having one for awhile.
2. DS Lite This thing brought me back to gaming after I had mostly lost interest. I also used it to play some GBA classics I missed out on. It was a cool revolutionary device before the smart phone and I feel made the touch screen popular. That's 6 awesome Castlevania games and 2 amazing Metroids as well New SMB that really stood out.
3. Wii U this system has some really great games plus it plays great indies and has a robust virtual console backwards compatibility catalog. I have more to play than I can handle.
4. Wii the DS reignited my interest in video games and the Wii was the result. Sure Wii Sports sold it to the wife at the time but when I played games like Galaxy and Metroid Prime 3 I was blown away by the quality of the games and having lost interest half way though PS2 cycle so these games felt like a big leap forward to me. Skyward sword was awesome too and TP was just ok though. NSMB Wii and Mario Kart Wii were huge fun as well having not played Mario Kart since the SNES.
5. SNES I wasn't the first cool kid to get this plus I was in to highschool and other interests were creeping in. I didn't get as many games as my friends so I spent most of my playing time on there console instead of my own. Super Castlevania 4, Final Fantasy II USA, Mario World, ALttP, Super Metroid, F-Zero...lots of fun.
6.3DS I enjoy this system but none of the games I have played on it really blew me away. Nice to have an eshop on a portable finally with the indies and VC that brings. A Link between worlds might be my favorite game on it. I am dissapointed by the relative lack of 2D platformers after the awesomness of DS had with Castlvania and Metroid
7. Gameboy I always felt this console was so limited. Favorite games I played on it were Gargoyles Quest and Final Fantasy Adventure and of course Tetris. I mostly just had interest in this the first year or two it was out.

1. Wii - Coolest system ever, I remember watching videos of the menu screen and really wishing the console would just come out already. The menu screen. This system provided many Rabbid-fueled laughs, Mario Kart-fueled wraths, classic games, and new classic games.

2. Nintendo 3DS XL - A bit of a step down from the Nintendo DS family in terms of the variety of retail games, but backwards compatibility makes up for that. The 3DS family improved on the features of the DS such as Wi-Fi connectivity and tag modes, while introducing downloadable classic games.

3. Game Boy Advance SP - The great handheld library, now with a screen that is visible in any lighting condition. It's also one of Nintendo's sexiest pieces of hardware—it just needs a headphone port.

4. GameCube - Yeah yeah, it dates me, but hey, five to ten years old is an important period in a gaming lifetime. For me it's still worth keeping around for the Sonic games, Metroid Prime 1 & 2, and being able to play GBA games on a big screen.

5. Nintendo 64 - Introduced me to the fun of four-player mayhem, and also of walking around collecting bananas.

6. Wii U - Wii backwards compatibility is nice, but not much else is. Now I will rant, boringly. There are about three games I really, really like on this system that can't be played on something else: Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, Paper Mario: Color Splash, and Mario Kart 8, which my friends do not like as much as Mario Kart Wii. (It doesn't matter much to me, but Sonic Lost World is on Windows now.) This is the only system that I boot up, look at the games I own on it, and wonder which of those I come close enough to wanting to play. I'll admit that part of that is because I am usually at college and the Wii U is always at home, leaving me with not much time to focus on big games. Other niggling complaints are the somewhat long startup time and the inability to look at my games on the TV screen, but choose one using the GamePad.

7. New Nintendo 3DS - I prefer the larger screens of the original XL, but I think I might prefer the way this feels to hold.

8. Game Boy Advance - Useful for connecting to GameCube, since the port on my GBA SP for that broke.

The rest are obsolete:
Nintendo 3DS - Like the XL but smaller
Game Boy Color - A less versatile GBA
Game Boy Pocket - A less versatile GBC
Nintendo DS - Inspired by the GBA SP, but still manages to be a hideous fatty
Nintendo DS Lite - Top screen broke

Gosh this is hard.
I love the Gamecube, because I have very few memories from the time my family had it, but the ones I do have are almost all me and my family playing on it. I think we still have it somewhere, I should break it out again. I was the Wii Sports bowling king of my family, and plenty of Lego games made that console for me. More recently, the WiiU is fantastic, love it more than the Wii.
My current two favorite have to be the New 3DS XL, and the Switch. Loving the Switch, and my 3DS is my baby. Love Monster Hunter X on that bad boy. I'm young, don't judge. I think I have to give it to the Gamecube for introducing me to gaming, and having a great controller.

Switch is in between GC and N64 right now, but if the lineup gets better it could easily climb to the top (if Mario Odyssey is as good as it looks and if we get Metroid Prime 4 and an exploration heavy 8th gen Pokemon game the Switch will be an automatic winner).

While the N64 is the only system out of this list that I didn't own, I have both Zelda games on VC and think its game library is phenomenal, with many ground-breaking titles. Wii U game library is amazing and high quality (quantity doesn't bother me since I don't have much time to play) and likewise for the GameCube. I disliked Wii though, besides the excellent VC service and Super Smash Bros Brawl. The waggle controls, annoying pointer controls that don't work properly for me often, awkward disembodied control scheme with Wiimote and nunchuk (IMHO), weak online, weak graphics for its time, high casual focus ... not a huge fan of it.

@RedDevilAde

Actually I think N64, since it was Nintendo's first time making 3D games, had some truly classic games on it. Both Zeldas for example are IMHO #2 and #3 in the entire series (and they were #1 and #2 until BotW came). Super Mario 64 is a huge open world 3D Platformer, Star Fox 64 was the best Star Fox ever, Goldeneye and Perfect Dark, Banjo, etc. Lots of classics. Although tbh I didn't play any N64 games besides the two Zeldas and Super Mario 64 (although it was on the DS not N64), I still think it has an amazing library with genuinely lengthy and interesting titles (unlike the NES and to a certain extent the SNES. Those games feel much smaller in scope and shorter than other modern games.

Peek-a-boo

Huh!

I somehow let this thread pass me by the first time round.

In order of preference, and only those that I have personally owned:

1. GameCube
2. Game Boy Advance
3. DS
4. Wii U
5. N64 = 3DS (tied)
6. Wii

1. The GameCube will always be my favourite.

It gave me three of the best games of all time; Metroid Prime, Resident Evil 4 and Super Monkey Ball, along with it being the very last Nintendo home console to receive a healthy selection of third party games that were on par - if not better - than the other two platforms at the time. This was Nintendo at their best.

2. Game Boy Advance was a 'best of' compilation of all of the greatest hits on the SNES, and was the perfect place to be introduced to the SNES catalogue for somebody who was only three years old at the time (when the SNES was released).

Whilst the GBA lacked a version of Super Metroid of some kind, we had the superb Metroid: Zero Mission and Fusion to make up for it.

Also had the Super Mario Advance series, WarioWare Inc., Wario Land 4, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, Mario Kart: Super Circuit, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Kuru Kuru Kururin, Golden Sun, F-Zero: Maximum Velocity and Advance Wars.

3. The DS got off to a rather slow start however, I have had thoroughly enjoyable time with it. Along with the PSone, it provided an abundance of unique games and, thanks to the dual screen, the DS offered a variety of new ways to play games too. Even my Nan loved the DS!

4. The Wii U had a fantastic first two years. It felt as close to the glorious GameCube days, despite the Wii U only lasting a shy over three years, seeing as 2016 was such a forgettable year to the point that it may as well have carried the likes of Star Fox Zero and Paper Mario: Colour Splash over to the Switch.

The four month homerun (in 2014) of Game & Wario, Pikmin 3, The Wonderful 101, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD and Super Mario 3D World from August to November is as good as it gets. The following year (in 2015) gave us Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze, Mario Kart 8, Bayonetta 2, Super Smash Bros., Hyrule Warriors and the whimsically charming Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker.

Splatoon was the last game I bought, before the inevitable decline begun.

5. N64 wasn't my favourite console. I was too young to enjoy the games that were rated 15 or above (such as Conker's Bad Fur Day, Perfect Dark and Turok to name but a few) and the N64 controller felt uncomfortable to use for long(er) periods of time.

Saying that, I had a lot of fun with Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64 and Lylat Wars (Star Fox 64) from Nintendo, and the likes of GoldenEye 007, Banjo-Kazooie and Diddy Kong Racing from Rare.

Funnily enough, my favourite N64 games were Mischief Makers and Snowboard Kids, neither of which were published or developed by Nintendo! I have had lots of happy memories playing those two.

5. The 3DS is my least appreciated handheld from Nintendo, mostly because I was falling out of portable gaming at the time. My fault, not theirs!

Outside of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D (I never got a chance to play it back in the day), Super Mario 3D Land, Phoenix Wright: Duel Destinies, Luigi's Mansion 2, BoxBoxBoy and The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, the latter of which was actually my favourite game during that year, I didn't feel quite as glowing about the 3DS as most folks do.

I still had a thoroughly enjoyable time with all of those games above though.

6. And last but not least, the Wii.

I have no idea why I am seeing so many lists in this thread that has the Wii perched up at the top, or close to, as it was the very first Nintendo console I owned that made me proactively look elsewhere (by that, I mean the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360).

I just didn't find it particularly enjoyable. I played all the well known Nintendo franchises and yet, I still felt like something was missing. Me and my family had a whale of a time with Wii Sports for the first month or so, and after playing Super Mario Galaxy 2, it ended up being my second favourite game of all time however, all in all, that was my time with the Wii in a nutshell.

Easily their most underwhelming console all round IMO.
