1) SNES
2) Gamecube
3) NES
4) GB
5) N64
6) GB Advance SP
7) DS Lite
8) Wii

Can't place Switch yet as I want to see how it goes and I never owned a Wii U or 3DS (though I am tempted by one as I have missed out on some stunners, I know).

These are personal favourites based mainly on nostalgia. The Wii was my least used console, I just didn't play it that much

Now I may be an idiot, but there's one thing I am not sir, and that sir, is an idiot

1) Nintendo GameCube
2) Nintendo 64
3) Game Boy Colour
4) Game Boy Advance SP
5) Super Nintendo Entertainment System
6) Wii U
7) Game Boy
8) Nintendo Entertainment System
9) Nintendo 3DS XL/New Nintendo 3DS XL
10) Nintendo DS
11) Wii
12) Game & Watch (Mario Bros.)

None of these were "bad" (perhaps besides the Wii), but just in order of preference - though it was very tough to call. I'd probably change the list if you asked again. And like some others, I'm not placing the Switch in this ranked list just yet!

1. N64 ..my older brother introduced me to gaming with his SNES, but it wasn't until the N64 when I had a console of my very own - and it's this, out of all platforms, that I have the most nostalgia for! The controller was an absolute dream, the games were awesome - and 4-player multiplayer was a revelation! It really offered something for everyone - Mario Party etc for casual play, Perfect Dark etc for a more 'hardcore' experience...and everything in between! I still have my ol' '64 - it still works - and I still love it...massively!

2. Wii ..the Wii felt like a true evolution of the N64's core concept - the introduction of motion controls opened up a whole new level of accessibility (I could even tempt my grandparents to give it a go!) - and the internet connectivity made multiplayer possible even if you were all by yourself! I just felt it was lacking a GoldenEye-type-game - a hardcore experience, aimed at adult audiences that really hooked me in the same way that some of Rare's N64 games did back-in-the-day (I know there was the GoldenEye 'remake' - but that really doesn't count in my book! ) ..again, I still play my Wii to this day - it still works (except online **grumble grumble!**) - and I still love it!

3. Switch ..has a chance of capturing top spot one day - but it's early days, so the games aren't really there quite yet. The core concept is the best Nintendo have ever delivered - it truly does seem to take the best elements of every console in their history and combine them in to one gorgeous little package! I wasn't entirely sold on the Joy-Con or the 'switch' mechanic at first (the main selling point was having a fresh new Zelda - and a Mario Kart that I hadn't played before - with room to add to that collection in future) but having the console in my hands, I instantly 'got it' - this is no gimmick! The ability to take your home console game saves with you on the go is a total game-changer - and the Joy-Con are way more comfortable than they look (!) and are so impressively versatile...I'm totally on board! ..in fact, it's made my PS4 feel almost irrelevant - which would've been unimaginable to me when I pre-ordered the console! So, so, so impressed!

4. SNES ..gave me my first gaming experiences, so it'll always be special to me! (technically it was my brothers console - but we lived together, so I think it counts! ) I fell in love with games - and Nintendo - because of the SNES...and that love will stay with me forever!

5. GB ..I don't need to explain how great it was - especially for the long, boring car journeys of my youth - but it finds itself at #5 because it was quite a lonely experience compared to the above ..I spent many an hour staring in to that little screen, especially trying to beat my Tetris high-score or trying to catch all dem Pokémon! ..and, again, I still have it and it still works! Great little console!

6. GC ..seems harsh to put the GameCube last - but it probably provided the fewest memories out of all of my Nintendo consoles. At University, I really hoped this would be the dominant console for dorm-room multiplayer but - although we played a heck of a lot of Mario Kart: Double Dash & Super Smash Bros. Meleé - people were generally far more interested in my PS2 or my N64 for lengthy 4-player sessions...it still gave me a lot of joy - they all did - it's just the only one that never really managed to take over my gaming life.

SNES - My first console and full of perfectly formed classics
Wii U - Stunning library of fun and joyful games, plus Virtual Console
Wii - Mario Galaxy 1&2!
N64 - Seminal games but slightly tarnished with age
Gamecube - Wind Waker! Resident Evil 4!
DS - Lots of nice games, but nothing I want to go back to.
3DS - Not a JRPG fan, so its scant pickings for me
GBA - Lovely portable SNES, but didn't add much new
Gameboy - Tetris and Zelda are amazing, but other games too basic
NES - Didn't have a kid, so not much nostalgia. Outdated, other than Super Mario games, which I played on SNES.

1: Switch. I know it's only 2.5 months old, and it managed to take top spot. It's not surprising, its core concept is the system I dreamed of existing since the 80's. The fact that it actually exists without any major compromises makes it almost impossible to not win. The library is still small, and I greatly dislike the focus on all these timed match online games, but I know the good content is coming, in large quantity, not too far away, and that's still just the first year. The versatility of controller options really sets it over the moon. Handheld joycons are a joy to use, and are what I wanted Wiimote + Nunchuk to be.

2: 3DS. I never, ever, expected any console would ever replace SNES as top dog, considering it held on for some 18 years or so. But 3DS did. I loved the immersion of the 3d, the portability and the suspend mod (carried over by Switch in the latter two instances), but most of all I loved the library. Some of the most amazing games have been on the 3DS and I've spent considerable amounts of time with that console. The RPGs, the oddball games, Luigi's Mansion....what a library that brought back the fun of SNES.

3: SNES for 18 or so years it led the top as the console that could never be supplanted. Mario World, LttP, Mystical Ninja, DKC, countless other amazing classics that still hold up today. It may have finally been supplanted, but it's a legend.

4: NES Hard to ignore the original. Its experiences might pale next to the above three, but it was a staple that introduced the foundation for the rest. A tremendous library, and many unique feeling games that just can't be replicated the way they played and felt back then. SNES was the better in almost every way, but some of the experiences on the NES make me almost want to consider it above. The Marios, Zelda,s odd games like Yo! Noid. Rescue Rangers, Millon's Secret Castle (I love to hate that game.) and even weirder stuff. NES had it all.

5: WiiU. it should rank lower, shouldn't it? But it still had some amazing games, and brought to HD some older amazing games. It doesn't hold up, due to its dearth of content, but what it did have still kept me busier than my PS4. I'll remember it fondly even if it was short lived. Tokyo Mirage was its swan song for me. A fun quirky way to send off a quirky little console.

6: Game Boy. The original, the classic, the bomb-proof DMG! I can't rate it as highly as the above consoles but what it did was amazing in its day. I never owned a GBC or GBA, or even DS the GB (and briefly Game Gear and PSP) was good enough for my portable gaming prior to the 3DS! It ate batteries like candy and you couldn't see the screen without a clip on light that also ate batteries like candy, but I still love it!

7: Wii. It's love-hate. I have some amazing, wonderful memories of experiences on that console that I'll never forget. And yet the entire life of the console felt lacking and contrived, with an ocean of games that never intrigued me. During the Galaxy/Kart/DKCR era it had its highs. I even enjoyed Mario Party on it....but the gimmick wore thin for me. I never really enjoyed playing "real" games on it, and casual games lost their appeal to me fast. I'll forever love it for those fond memories and "backward Nintendo Iwata-isms" but I can't regard it highly as a console overall.

8: Virtual Boy (How could I forget this before I posted? Oh, that's why...) It was amazing, it was immersive, I loved both games ever made for it, and it was the most weirdly isolating, kind of disturbing experience I could think of. I still have it. Remember it fondly. But at the bottom it goes. Even below the Wii.

(Never owned GC, experiencing some of its games and controller on the Wii, and never owned an N64 in its own time, so I can't rate those.)

1. Gamecube - A good portion of Nintendo's very best output. Had a blast with this system. Especially with Animal Crossing GCN, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Twilight Princess, and Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door.
2.Nintendo 64 - Late N64 was another portion of Nintendo's very best output - Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Paper Mario, Super Smash Bros., Kirby 64. I could go on. Of course, I was rather young when this was released and amused by everything, but I loved the system. lol
3. 3DS - Nintendo's best output since the Gamecube. There are some bad games on here (Sticker Star) and some really disappointing (Pokemon Sun/Moon, Mario Kart 7) but other than that, I see a very large solid lineup of games. Animal Crossing New Leaf is by far the best Animal Crossing game that has ever been made and was a nice recovery after Wii's disastrous City Folk.
4. Wii U - The system needs more love. Breath of the Wild is easily the most inspired product Nintendo has put out in many years, and that raises the Wii U up pretty high in my mind. Otherwise it was a system of solid, but not amazing games. Mario Kart 8 was very good, though.
5. DS - Pretty much a Pokemon machine. Every single mainline Pokemon game on the system was a blast. There were other pretty good titles like Mario Kart DS, Wild World, and a Golden Sun sequel was a pleasant surprise.
6. Wii - Meh. So meh. Pretty much every series I loved before had a very disappointing entry on this system. The motion controls were the very definition of gimmickry and were forced in places where they shouldn't be, making the games worse. This system was just so bad in every way, aside from the introduction of Virtual Console, I suppose.
7. SNES - A good console in its time, but over the years most of the games just don't appeal to me anymore (I suppose we can blame Nintendo's over-reliance on 2D platformers as of late, I'm just tired of them). Way better than the NES, but still too dated.
8. Gameboy Advance - It's hard for me to know where to rank this. It was a good system, with some memorable titles, but overall I wish it could have been more.
9. Gameboy Color - The Gameboy Color has Pokemon Crystal, my favorite Pokemon title for so many years. But aside from that... It's dated, like the NES. Some good games for the time, though.
10. Gameboy - So dated. The only games I ever really enjoyed on the system were Pokemon. They were so good during the time, but they are horribly dated and practically unplayable by today's standards.
11. NES - The most dated of all. This was made really evident to me when Nintendo released the Ambassador's NES titles to us early 3DS adopters and the vast majority of them of felt like minigames. Not only are they minigames, but they have terrible saving features and are just clunky games overall. They do not hold up.

This isn't an easy list to make. Generally I consider Wii to be the most disappointing console, but I had to really think about what is more playable to me nowadays. It's very hard to rank any of the systems I put below the Wii.

Ok here goes....

N64 (goldeneye and mario kart battles defined my youth)
Gamecube sooo many great games
GBA amazing amazing amazing was really hard not give this the top spot
DS
WiiU
3DS
GameBoy Player GCN
Wii
Not owned a NES, SNES or earlier Gameboy.

Let's see where the Switch eventually ends up too early to add to the list though.

Some of Mario Odyssey is seriously giving heart palpitations.... that plumber is trying to kill me!

RenderSpotlight

Wii U (Great games of its own, access to VC and backwards compatible with the Wii makes this the top for me)
NES (Not my first video game console, but the one that really got me into video games)
Wii (Wii U took its spot)
3DS (access to DS games plus its own games makes it high on the list)
Original GBA ( Great Games, love the form factor. Would have been higher if there was a back-lit screen)
DS (can play GBA games with a fully lit screen!)
SNES (just okay, there are only a small number of games I still care to play today.)

GameBoy (never really like using it, games were okay, but I was always left wanting more)
GameCube/N64 (Better than the Virtual Boy)
Virtual Boy (Gave me a headache)

What a choice!
So below I'll list my choices, along with a personal highlight of each console.

Wii U - such a solid line up of 1st party games. HD Nintendo.
SNES - A link to the past, Rare glory days, Chrono trigger, True Mario RPG.
DS family - Lots Of Zelda games, Lots of games. Steeet pass.
N64 - Playing Ocarina for the 1st time, playing Mario 64 for the 1st time.
GameCube - Powerful for the time, F-Zero GX, Eternal darkness, Launched with a Luigi game (Luigi's mansion), had a handle.
NES - my 1st Console, the beginning of a love affair that has spanned over 25 years.
Wii - metroid Prime trilogy (yes, I know, 2 of them were on the GC) Galaxy 1 & 2.
Gameboy family - Pokémon blue

I'm grouping all gameboy branded systems in the same group, same with the DS family.

I'm not going to include the Switch as all the other systems have had their entire life span, however long it was, to be judged, wouldn't consider it fair to judge the Switch after 4 months on the market.

From bottom to top. Also note that I am ranking the consoles mostly on the actual hardware (how does the controller feel, button layout, look of the console, features of the console etc.). Newer systems are not ranked higher for better graphics and apps such an Internet Brower, Netflix etc. Also note that my vision may be clouded to a degree by nostalgia but objectivity is pure fiction anyway.

1. Gameboy Color

2. Gameboy Advance (Always refused to play games on either Gameboy since I don't see a reason to curl up beneath a light source that may or may not bend at just the right angle so I can actually see what's going on versus playing on my tv.

3. WiiU ( necessity of the Gamepad, battery life of the Gamepad, you could only walk away from the console with the Gamepad like 10 meters, Gamepad was hardly ever used in a meaningful way, Gamepad looks like some toy tv from toys r us, material of the Gamepad allowed for smears even with clean hands, home menu design, takes ages to change your language, which I've had to do often since I game in English while others don't and prefer German, huge gaps between meaningful software releases, especially in the first year

4. Nintendo 3DS (the original) - tiny size, material allowed for smears even with clean hands, 3D slider could easily be moved unintentionally, bad launch lineup

5. Wii - motion controls get annoying really quickly and shaking was used instead of a button press rather often, home menu navigation via pointer (UGHHH!) - positives: great game lineup, even Skyward Sword had fun and unique controls, still miss them a bit, GameCube backwards capability YESSS!

6. Nintendo DS - should've come with more touchpens lol always lost those, appearances to blocky and ugly - positives: good games lineup, touchscreen lead to interesting new styles of games, backwards capability with GBA games SWEET!

7. SNES

8. Nintendo 3DS XL - positives: bigger size, better touchpen, better overall design, material no longer allowed for easy smears, library started to get great

9. Gameboy Advance SP - The answer to my prayers and the first Handheld I actively used - positives: You can actually see stuff now!, small size lead to easy transportation (since I was rather young back then without big hands, a tiny size isn't seen as a negative here as opposed to when my hands had grown as big as they are), finally I can play those GB and GBA games!

10. DSi - Better looking design, camera integration

11. N64 - Weirdest looking controller (only the beta PS3 boomerang controller looked more freaky), button layout not optimal - positives: Those games and nostalgia, though!

12. New Nintendo 3DS XL - material back to being easily smeared even with clean hands, can't change face plates like you can with the standard sized N3DS - positives: great library, great design, home menu themes, 3D actually works now

13. Switch - No power button on controllers, turning off docked console completely was a bit annoying at first but you adjust to it rather quickly, no home menu music? Or have I gone deaf? Weird. weak kickstand, weak battery life undocked - positives: Region free BABY!! (screamed like a gorilla during the mating season when they announced that!), easy creation of accounts from other regions (unlike PlayStation!), you can see your entire library on the home menu (games you own physical AND digital), great design, material doesn't allow for easy smears, great button layout on all controller configurations, especially docked gaming with Joy-Cons outside the grip is relaxing, great first, second and indie releases on a regular basis, Switch from docked to undocked gaming is easy and instantaneous.

14. GameCube - The first console I've actively played games on (since on N64, I had my dad play them for me). Sunshine is the first game I've ever finished by myself, Wind Waker the first I've actually completed. Nuff said!

I'll just list the defining games of each system for me.

1) Gamecube — Zelda: Collector's Edition disc (OoT & MM), Metroid Prime 1 & 2, and The Thousand Year Door.

2) Wii — Twilight Princess (first several playthroughs), Metroid Prime 3, Okami, Super Paper Mario, and Monster Hunter Tri.

3) Weirdly, 3DS — Monster Hunter 3U, Monster Hunter 4U, and Monster Hunter Cross (Yes, really. I don't put much stock in portable games, but Monster Hunter has always been console quality, so the 3DS counts. There's also a bunch of other IMO unremarkable first party games that I haven't finished for the most part.)

4) Switch — A pretty good open world game, Mario Kart 8, TBA.

5) DS — Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, Mario Kart DS, Super Mario 64, NSMB... I honestly can't remember most of the games I played on DS, probably because I've lost most of the carts.

6) GBA — The Minish Cap, Pokemon Sapphire (But that was on my friend's system. When I got my own GBA years later I played Minish Cap, then I tried Leaf Green but didn't get very far because of how dull it was after playing Red Version on a friend's system years before. I did not play nearly as much GBA as other systems.)

I don't really get why anyone would ever rank the Gamecube higher than the Wii, or the Wii higher than the Wii U. Full backwards compatibility means the Wii was a Gamecube, but with added wiimotes, motion control options, and a bit more oomph; and the Wii u was a Wii (after a bit of loading, and minus the Gamecube BC unless you softmod), but with much more oomph and HD visuals.

You guys had me at blood and semen.

You are free to have your own opinion on the matter, but I judge the GCN, Wii, and Wii U all separately for the quality of games and the systems. The GCN's games were much higher in quality than the Wii, IMO, and the Wii was a clunky system with gimmicky, forced motion control. Saying that the Wii is a better system than the GCN just because it could play GCN games is incredibly absurd in my mind, because the Wii was not a good system IMO. And the GCN should get credit for the games that were originally developed and released on it.

I'll just do a top five.

1) Nintendo 3DS - A portable JRPG haven (mostly thanks to Atlus' AMAZING output on the system). Several amazing first-party games. Robust Japanese third party support. The 3D "gimmick," when utilized properly by developers, is astounding.

Defining games include: Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse, Etrian Odyssey IV, Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward, The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, Super Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7, and Shantae and the Pirate's Curse

2) SNES - The system where 2D gaming really came into its own thanks to the increased complexity allowed by this 16-bit powerhouse. Despite not owning it until relatively recently, I have played many of its games (mostly on other systems), and have been continually astounded by the quality of its library. Incredibly comfortable and well-designed controller. Arguably represents Nintendo at its peak.

Defining games include: Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, Final Fantasy VI, Super Metroid, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest, Super Castlevania IV, and Mega Man X

3) Nintendo DS - An amazing, innovative portable that received gobs of support. While many of its games shoe-horned in touch controls (to their detriment), the touch screen also allowed for new types of games to be made, in addition to reviving the point and click adventure game genre, which had all but died off at the time this system came out.

Defining games include: Etrian Odyssey III, Contra 4, Mario Kart DS, Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations, Professor Layton and the Unwound Future, Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia, and Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors

4) NES - Despite this system being defined by very basic and (these days) somewhat primitive experiences, it's easy to forget just how earth-shattering this system's legacy is, and how many new IPs it spawned. Not only did it save console gaming in the United States, but it was also the birthplace of most of Nintendo's best franchises. While the boxy original controller and front-loading system are more iconic, for me, the redesigned top-loading model with its comfortable "dog bone" controller will always be what I think back to when I talk about the system.

Defining games include: Super Mario Bros. 3, Contra, Mega Man 2, Castlevania, Mike Tyson's Punchout, Kirby's Adventure, and Paperboy

5) Gamecube - A lovely box of a console. The controller is one of the most comfortable ever made with wonderful triggers and giant, candy-colored face buttons, even if I don't like the piddly D-Pad. The library is full of weird and wonderful experiences.

Defining games include: Resident Evil remake, Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, Super Mario Sunshine, Metroid Prime, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-Zero GX, and Luigi's Mansion

Some of you are very close to the right answer. But here is the comprehensive list from which everyone can copy the necessary systems in that order.

1) Nintendo 3DS
2) SNES
3) NES
4) Nintendo DS
5) Nintendo 64
6) Gamecube
7) Gameboy color
8) Gameboy Advance
9) Wii
10) Wii U
11) Gameboy

Wii and Wii U Are both fantastic devices but someone simply has to be on the lower half too.

I didn't list Switch yet, although I do own it, since it's still very much work in progress.
