I'm really surprised Kid Icarus: Uprising gets counted, too...even if we're counting Star Fox, half that game takes you off the rails and on the ground...
Yeah, I agree. I haven't called anyone out on their answers, because I don't want to start an argument, but personally, I thought games like Star Fox were considered Rail-Shooters, not Shumps (Though I can understand why someone would list them, since they're essentially the 3D evolution of the genré).
KI:U is even more slippery, because only certain sections (while there are a lot of them) that have this type of gameplay. Heck, Super Mario Land, Kingdom Hearts, and even Bayonetta (from what I understand) that have required Shump or Rail Shooter sections.
I guess if we're counting them though, I could add Sin & Punishment: Star Successor to my list...
Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)
StarFox (and 64) would top my lists but I've always thought of that as a space combat game.
Did nobody here have an Amiga? I think most of my favourite shmups were chosen by their soundtracks.
1. Xenon 2 - Amiga
2. Project X -Amiga
3. Axelay - SNES (never owned this one but always loved it despite mediocre reviews back in the day)
4. Blood Money - Amiga
5. Terra Cresta - C64
P.S. Sorry to be pedantic but Isn't it 'shmups' rather than 'shumps'

Vanguard (Atari 2600) - first shmup for me ever! Sol-Feace (this game came with the SEGA CD and I enjoyed it quite a bit) Life Force (aka Salamander in other regions) Gradius II: Gofer No Yabou (a Japanese import - it's available on the Wii VC) Lords of Thunder (another fun shmup that's also on the Wii VC).
Honorable Mention goes to Bit.Trip Fate (although this is more of a 'rails' game with shmup elements to it,...still fun !!)
Shoot 'em up usually refers to the "forced-scrolling shooter", as well as the "Fixed screen shooter" a la Galaga. However, it's become more or less a catch all term for any arcade-y pattern memorization game that heavily features projectiles, meaning it would include run 'n' guns, rail shooters, and twin-stick 'free-movement' shooters. Personally, I prefer to keep it simple, so I only use shmups to refer to fixed and scrolling shooters (cute 'em ups and bullet hells are part of the scrolling shooter subgenre). It sounds as though RR529 has defined it as fixed and scrolling shooters as well.
Shoot 'em up Construction Kit was awesome on Amiga and C64.
Nintendo should try to make as many games like that on Wii U where people can share simple cloned games on Miiverse. Hopefully Mario Maker inspires a whole load of game making tools.

Don't have a "top 5" but glad to see Soldier Blade and Ikaruga getting some love.
One game that I enjoyed a great deal and doubt anyone will mention was Blast Works on Wii. Based heavily on the Kenta Cho game, Tumiki Fighters, and with a full level editor and multiple unlockable games included on the disc (Gunroar, Torus Trooper, rRootage, and the original Tumiki Fighters too) it's a pretty cool little package. The game apparently bombed at retail so can be found very cheap. Not really the best Shmup around, but fantastic value and certainly an interesting idea.
