The title says it all. (I'm not sure if they traditionally count, but stationary shooters like Space Invaders are eligible here, if you so wish).

Here's Mine:

5. Mobile Light Force 2/Castle of Shikigami (PS2) - I picked this up at a second hand shop when I was younger, without knowing what I was getting myself into (it had been rebranded during it's localization, with no actual game screens on the back of the box), but boy was this a memorable game. I'm not quite sure if it was "Bullet H*ll" or not, but I do remember that it was incredibly hard, and even with a friend along in co-op we could never beat it. It was tons of fun, though, especially with it's very quirky Japanese elements.

4. Solar Striker (GameBoy) - This was actually the first Shump I'd ever played (got it with my GB), and though I never beat it, I spent hours trying to, and it's memorable music is still etched in my mind.

3. Salvo Saga HD (Android) - This may be a surprising pick to some of you (as a mobile game), but this game was really fun (and the most recent game on this list that I've played). It's a "Bullet H*ll" style shooter and each of the game's 10 levels features a different neon infused background based on a different culture (like level 3's Japanese infused look), with that level's music & boss following the same theme. The control scheme used, along with the difficulty curve used, fit's the platform perfectly. It does have IAP's, but they're tucked away inside a shop, and they're hardly necessary (I've completed the first two difficulty sets without any problem, and you get upgrades to your ship simply by playing well).

2. 3D Classics: Twinbee (3DS eShop) - This was the first Shump that I actually managed to run through (though, I haven't been able to beat it on the more difficult runs), and I adore it's bright & cheery vibe, and unique gameplay hook (with Juggling the bells).

1. Galaga (Arcade/NES) - I've played both the arcade version (at a near by laundromat) & own the NES version (on Wii VC), and love them both. I've never beaten it (only gotten to level 17 or 18), but It's very addicting, and a true classic.

This is going to be tough but as of right now here they are.

5. Raiden — I love this series which is one of the reasons I got the Raiden pack on OUYA
4. R-Type — I guess I will use this one since I cant think of any other right now.
3. UN Squadron (NES) — Alot of people didnt like this game but its one of my favorites on the SNES.
2. Velocity 2X (PS4) — Really enjoying this one alot the fact that its different by challenging at how fast you can get through a level is a unique touch
1. Resogun (PS4) — Yeah if you have a PS4 and dont have this game then you are missing out. Its an indie game but plays like an AAA one of the best games for the PS4 currently.

I haven't played too many shmups but 3 of my favorites are:

3D Classics: Twinbee

Air Gallet

And... STARFOX 64! Seriously, this is a game like no other out there. Pure Nintendo awesomeness

EDIT: Scram Kitty is a great shooter too. It's so unique that I didn't count it as one.

I don't really play a lot of Shmups, but Sin and Punishment Star Successor is AMAZING! Seriously one of the better Wii-games out there, and that's saying something.

unrandomsam

Seirei Senshi Spriggan
Robo Aleste
M.U.S.H.A
Soldier Blade
Zanac X Zanac

(No particular order other than Spriggan being the best).

I like Raiden but I think the best are Raiden 2 and Raiden DX and there are no good ways to play them. (The Playstation port is not that good).

Indie Ones

Ikaruga
Jamestown
Astebreed (Best indie game of this year I like it loads more than Resogun.)

I like Sin & Punishment 2 as well but I don't really count it as a shmup.

I think Rogue Squadron 2 is better than any Starfox as well.

I find that hard to believe when compare to the arcade version of the game.

No order:

Raiden ll
R-Type ll
Ikaruga
Gradius III
U.N. Squadron
Star Fox SNES & N64 (first Shump I ever played).

Hm, I don't my top 10 have changed in forever...

★. Raiden Fighters - Freakin' loved all 3 Raiden Fighters games, but I kept going back to the first one the most. Definitely the nostalgia vote for me.

1. Star Parodier - The difficulty feels so balanced and I love the weapons and detailed sprites and backrounds.

2. Lords of Thunder - I liked choosing your destinations and the shop system. Made the difficulty balanced and the stages more focused.

3. Soldier Blade - Again, balanced difficulty, good level design, cool weapons. Not exactly unique in any way, but I enjoyed it a lot.

4. MUSHA - Very fun game with some nice tweaks here and there. Awesome and frequent bosses, too. Mad hard, though...

5. Gley Lancer - Nice variety of play styles on offer with a fairly balanced difficulty curve. Could've used more memorable bosses, though.

You only asked for 5, but I assure you Galaga and Final Soldier would be on the full top 10.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Blazing Lasers. Amazing game.

Also, opinions may vary, but i don't really think the Starfox or Rogue Squadron games should be considered shmups (but they are great games).

The Shpydarloggery
She-Ra is awesome. If you believe otherwise, you are clearly wrong.
Urban Champion is GLORIOUS.

Games I like are Sin and Punishment 2, Varth and more recently, Scram Kitty.

I will comment in this thread, never being able to find it again.

Blazing Lazer's main problem is the difficulty is way too easy until the second to last level, and then it spikes pretty hard, and if you die at that point, you're more or less screwed since you've probably been relying on fully upgraded weapons up until that point...

I don't think Blazing Lasers is much easier than Soldier Blade or Final Soldier.

(Super Star Soldier is a lot harder than any of them though).

The last two levels of Star Parodia are pretty difficult without powerups. The last I have never done without going into it with loads of lives. (And the thing that allows you to respawn without going back to the beginning of the level).

Yeah, I know the last level was hard in Star Parodier, but it didn't feel like such a sharp turn like it did in BLazers, where I was more or less sailing through the game until the second to last level. :/ And Soldier Blade and Final Soldier are way harder, man. Maybe the first level or two were easy in those games, but it gets real after that.

I'm really surprised Kid Icarus: Uprising gets counted, too...even if we're counting Star Fox, half that game takes you off the rails and on the ground...
