Topic: why Japanese games sell well in US and not in Japan?

Series like Metroid sell really well in US but not so in Japan. Why is that? I mean for franchises like that, Why do Japanese devs continue making them. Wouldn't it have failed to reach their expectations by not making the game sell well across the globe?

After so long...I'm back. Don't ask why

Does Dragon Quest still outsell Final Fantasy in Japan?
If so, they why don't they stop making Final Fantasies and put that effort into more Dragon Quests?

(not that more Dragon Quest is a bad thing )

Why not make the Final Fantasy games more like Dragon Quest (That would be great for everybody).

The West can buy it based on hype and because of the Final Fantasy name. Japan can buy it because they actually look at what it is like and buy it based on merit.

Exactly. And it's very much a society based thing. What are you friends buying? What is the TV telling you to buy? What is the Toilet telling you to buy (Japan only, lol)? What is considered "cool", or "manly", etc.?

Why do you think FPS slog the market in the west? Because of the gun culture that glorifies the use of guns as manly. Why do you think hand helds do so well in Japan? Everyone commutes all over the place so it's more typical to play then.

I have no clue why Dragon Quest is so popular though (maybe someone could tell me). I mean, it's a decent series, but who considers grinding that much in a turn-based battle system fun?

Honestly? As everyone else has said, different cultures have different tastes born from their differing societies and experiences. It's not a hard concept to grasp.

Compare it to the last home console Dragon Quest.

If they said something like we admit we have lost our way so we are going to make it more like Dragon Quest that should work without much else.

Does anyone know if this happens the other way around? A game made in the west that isn't popular there, but is popular in Japan.

It is not the same anyway you couldn't call 3D World - Final Fantasy but you could make a Dragon Quest game and call it Final Fantasy.

Wizardry. It's so popular the original owners sold the franchise to a Japanese company.

I thought at one point Capcom of Japan was thinking of giving Capcom USA ownership of the Street Fighter franchise.

How did I ever forget Spelunker? I hear it's a cult classic, if the cult is people who like to challenge bad games.
Maybe Lode Runner as well. Pretty sure it's the Japanese that have been putting out ports/remakes all these years.

Almost never. If you look at the sales numbers, there's a massive asymmetry between the western buying habits and the Japanese buying habits. The japanese buy almost nothing from the rest of the world. Whereas we buy the vast majority of their products. I don't wanna badmouth Japan too harshly, cos it is a country I have a great love for, but they really should be ashamed at how culturally closed they are in that sense.

This is also a good point, and I have to agree a lot of the time.

I can't think of any gaming products at the top of my head that are huge in Japan. Games like Call of Duty, Halo, and Forza do have 'cult followings' among the hardcore otaku crowd, but that's really it. That being said, I do recall the Grand Theft Auto series being quite successful over here.

GTA is one of the only titles that has even scratched the surface in Japan. And it's still only a tiny scratch. GTA5 sold about 35 million. Only 1 million in Japan. That's still hugely slanted when you compare to things like Mario, Zelda, Final Fantasy, which are pretty much evenly distributed in worldwide sales. Actually Zelda tends to sell better in the US than in Japan.
