So with the dawn of a new generation this year I wanted to know what was everyone's definitive Retail and Download games for for the wii/ps3/360 gen. also remember DS and PSP appply for this as well.
Mine hand's down are
What Can i say. This was the 2nd 360 game I owned and it's what really made me a believer in HD systems. The story, the combat, the music all blended carefully to make an engrossing experience.
My first downloadable game and Metroidvania. Light on story and the parts that were their didn't make any sort of sense but its still a very good game. Also longer than I expected the genre to be like.
WAT!

Dark Souls and KOF XIII, with Shadow Complex as my pick for downloadable titles, and Ghost Trick and Trails of the Sky for my Handheld picks. Ironically I just got done posting in a similar topic on another forum, except that one was about shining examples of how far we had come...which ultimately translated as "what's your favorite game this gen", judging from the posts.
To be quite honest, I could barely answer this. Very few games left an impression on me this gen that weren't on the PSP or DS. The best games have yet to come, too: We still got Street Fighter vs. Tekken, Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus HD, Persona Fighter, Xenoblade Chronicles, The Last Story, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Phantasy Star Online 2, Tales of Graces f, Tales of Xillia, and Ni no Kuni to look forward to, plus some games that are inevitable, like Darkstalkers 4, Persona 5, and Kingdom Hearts 3.
It's like, I just love a cowboy
You know
I'm just like, I just, I know, it's bad
But I'm just like
Can I just like, hang off the back of your horse
And can you go a little faster?!

The entire generation? Dang, too many genres to take apart there.
But.. if I have to think of one title that had the biggest impact on me in a traditional gaming kind of way--and that gave me a joyful feeling that I was seeing the future of gaming I'd dreamt about long ago as an 8-bit kid--it would have to be Mario Galaxy. That's one of the finest games I've played in my lifetime, and still the crowning achievement of everything Mario in my eyes (yes, the sequel is fun but doesn't compare overall).
Twitter is a good place to throw your nonsense. Wii FC: 8378 9716 1696 8633 || "How can mushrooms give you extra life? Get the green ones." -
It's between Chrono Trigger DS, Skyward Sword, and Donkey Kong Countey Returns. But I suppose because Chrono Trigger isn't technically from "this generation," it would have to be Donkey Kong Country. Not only did it bring the nostalgia full force, but it made me fall in love all over again. Brilliant level design, sheer challenge, and fun times wih the entire family. That's a great game.
I'm going to cheat here. And do one for each system. Because it's way too hard to choose...
PS3: The entire Uncharted series.
It would be unfair to choose one over the other, because they all hold an equally special place in my heart. I played Uncharted 1 & 2 back-to-back when I first got my PS3, and it was a gaming experience I have yet to match. Playing the 3rd nearly a year later, it was like revisiting an old friend. And my, how that friend has grown. The saga of Nathan Drake is best played in its entirety. It would be a crime not to.
X-Box 360: Halo: Reach.
Halo: Reach was the only reason I regretted selling my 360. From beginning to end, it was a fantastic game with a campaign rivaled only by Halo: Combat Evolved in my opinion. The multiplayer modes and Firefight make this my favorite 360 game, and perhaps even my favorite FPS of all time. (Sorry, GoldenEye.)
Wii: Super Mario Galaxy.
Super Mario Galaxy is a masterpiece. From its amazing orchestral soundtrack to its stunning visuals (unmatched by many Wii games released even years after its release) and imaginative level design, Galaxy is quite simply the best Mario game I've played... and I've played them all. Super Mario Galaxy 2 was also great, but it didn't quite match the epic level of its predecessor.
DS: Pokemon HeartGold, Platinum, and Black.
Cheating a bit here again, but I couldn't choose. HeartGold is a flawless remake of my favorite Pokemon game of all time. But Black and Platinum added so much to the series that it's hard to not give credit where credit is due. I love them all.
PSP: God of War: Chains of Olympus.
(Please note, I still haven't played Ghost of Sparta.) Chains of Olympus was epic beyond belief. One of my first PSP games, as well as my first God of War game, Chains of Olympus grabbed me by the throat and threw me into a fiery pit of awesome. The most console-like experience I've yet played on the go. (Can't wait to get my Vita!)
Honorable Mentions: Since I'm not entirely sure if the 3DS counts as this gen, and the fact that its library is in its infancy, I left it out. But I'm sure that within a year or two, Super Mario 3D Land will still be my favorite game for the system. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Portal 2 for PS3. Mario Kart DS and New Super Mario Bros. for DS. Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker for PSP.
I should probably stop myself there... (also Minecraft and Portal tie for PC.)
BIT.TRIP FLUX broke new ground in player interactivity with its "unorthodox" ending (the whole series is loaded with meaning as well); Portal craftedbaked the best character of this generation, GLaDOS, and remains the best example of minimalist storytelling I have ever seen (Portal 2 was pretty awesome too); Puzzle Agent proved itself to be unequaled in atmosphere (NightSky didn't do a bad job with it either), and while the sequel didn't change things up much, it still featured amazingly sharp writing (so did the entirety of Sam & Max Save the World); VVVVVV is the most plain fun game ever (while another game of Terry Cavanagh's, Don't Look Back, may be the most haunting); and Cave Story is the near-perfect synthesis of a video game's components: story, music, and gameplay.
Is that enough image links, commas, semicolons, and parentheses for you?
Would it be hotlinking to directly link to the image in the Nintendo Life BIT.TRIP FLUX article? I didn't just in case.

There can only be one, like in that foreign movie where there could only be one, and in the end there is only one dude left, because that was the point.
@ChocoGoldfish Scribblenauts isn't for everyone, you need an imagination to enjoy that game. Of course you'd need an imagination to enjoy Ape Escape too lol!
