Topic: Should Nintendo focus on Story more than gameplay?

As a fan of Nintendo, I know deep down that Nintendo focuses more on gameplay than on story but then when seeing Star Fox and Metroid having story elements that may require previous games to be played as such, you think Nintendo is likely to do this in future? Don't get me wrong, I really do love Star Fox and Metroid but the thing is if its story focused, then how will it motivate new gamers and so to get into the series?

Third Star Fox related thread of the day?

Also, why is it always story or gameplay. Why not both?

Other than RPG's I would rather have no story at all.

(I don't mind the few lines of text after a castle in Mario World. I don't like cutscenes with the sole exception of the ones in Rondo of Blood).

RPG elements in other games are terrible. Makes the game only reward the amount of time spent. If you cannot kill a boss it is unknown whether it is lack of skill or just not enough grinding which ruins the game.

Forced tutorials also spoil games. (If it is separate it does no harm to anybody). A game should be brilliant immediately. Easy to learn - hard to master. Like old coin-ops.

I suppose just the story can be enough to carry a game but it never seems to be - Stuff like Final Fantasy VI / Dragon Quest V / Skies of Arcadia it is.

(It need to be a story I would like to watch a film about or read a book about. Not something totally boring).

I'm just not a fan of taking OUT story for gameplay, which is what happened with sticker star I believe. Ideally I just want both

Story just isn't Nintendo's strong suit, and it seems like most of the older guys at the company tend to frown upon it.

The Thousand Year Door has a good story.

Even the GBA Fire Emblem just released I think does (I certainly care about much more than the Awakening one).

I would like Zelda more I think if the story was better (Like Oracle of Ages).

Lots of Nintendo games have cool stories.

That's true. Games like Thousand Year Door really shine. But the problem is how Nintendo can motivate new comers to get into their franchises if the series requires story elements that take place after the previous games? Like Golden Sun for example.

No, they should focus more on content (as in the world, characters, ideas, etc in general) rather than gameplay. The fact is, pretty much no Mario games since the Gamecube or Wii have added anything massively new to the Mario universe, at least not outside of the RPG spinoffs and perhaps Mario Kart. People play games and enjoy media for content, not gameplay; doing the latter would be like watching a film simply because of how it's written/filmed.

Which is odd as Majora's Mask, Mother 3 and arguably the Metroid games kinda embarrass most video game stories.

but yeah, Nintendo focusing on gameplay is a good idea unless they take away story for no good reason

This is a slippery slope.
Story is a motivational factor and sometimes a breaking point, but gameplay and content should always remain the focus. Why would anyone play Titanfall? For the mech awesomeness, however lack of content is what killed the game. The campaign is a joke, leaving only death matches which after a month, got old quickly. Not every game can be The Last of Us, and I if had to be honest, it's better the industry doesn't try to follow suit. I believe TLoU's success is a fluke, I'd say it's only strong point is the plot. No one ever seems to talk about how it plays or what you can do in it, they mostly bring up the story and characters. Honestly I get the feeling it's a playable movie rather than an actual game, the only few gameplay complaints I've heard ( which I had to look for) is mildly ignored in favor of gushing over the story. It's kind of the reason I'm turned off ever playing it when I eventually do get a PS4, I have no idea how it plays, which for a video game is a huge fail in my book. I'm not saying that the story is not allowed to be good, I'm saying I prefer gameplay and content with the story being incentive and motivation.

Deathmatches are pure gameplay over story. It only gets old if it was never any good to start with. (UT2004 deathmatches are still not old to me even now).

Gameplay and contents is what sells it for me. Story is also cool but for the most part whenever I reminisce about a game I play years ago, I can hardly remember the details of the story no matter how great it is, yet I can remember how good/bad the gameplay is and how long it took to beat/complete it. I guess I'm suffer from princess-in-the-castle syndrome.

As for Nintendo, I think they currently have a nice balance with most of their IPs.

A dying animal struggles, thrashes and howls in protest as its life torn from it. To see this in action, watch Animal Planet. The same thing happens when a video game is or isn't released. To see this in action, stay here.

So now my problem is that I have only played two star fox games so does anyone know if the stories of Assault and Command or even adventures make a huge impact on the gameplay aspect? Is it something like Golden sun where you need the other games to fully understand the story? Is it the same case for Metroid as well?

It depends on genre, i suppose.

Gameplay depends to translate anywhere in the world to any age.

Deep storyline is nice to have, but is much harder to convey universally- which I think is a big deal for Ninty.
