Mario was the first. Mario was the first to turn full on 3d. Mario got in a kart first. Mario lead Nintendo into the company loveletter Smash bros. Mario got on Saturday morning kids TV first. Mario went to Hollywood. Mario beat Sonic in the console race.
Sonic is an icon of video games in the 90's, but Mario is an icon of popular culture since the early 80's. Plus there are a lot more memorable games of different genres and dimensions that Mario has appeared in that have define childhoods.
Isn't it obvious that Falco Lombardi is actually a parrot?
Sonic and Mega Man are not as relevant as they were years ago. They are has-beens now.
Sonic and Megaman are different in that regard in that Sonic's has-been status isn't for lack of trying. Megaman on the other hand could have had a much larger presence in today's gaming world if Capcom would just use him already.
Ultimately I agree with what you're saying though. I weep for Megaman.
If you add me, I need to at least know you or I won't add you back.

Well at least most of the new Megaman games are actually good. It just Capcom acting like Sonic Team and don't want to market there games. That and Capcom don't want to make Megaman games for some stupid reason.

Ok let me elaborate the question I'm trying to make here.
If Sonic is famous, how come he doesn't win awards like any one award for the Interactive Arts and Science Hall of Fame unlike Mario or that Sonic CD did push the boundaries in the gaming industry? How is it that his unique abilities don't get any sort of recognition? Its not the recent games I'm talking about. Its about how much of impact he's brought to the game world and its nowhere as revolutionary as Mario because of some of his great games being unoriginal?
Think about what happened to Alex Kidd. He was Sega's icon for several years before he fell from grace. Heck, the Segagaga game even mentioned the process.
Sonic is basically the next Alex Kidd, but in this case Sega can't seem to let go or change him enough to be as relevant as Mario or other icons. Sonic is stuck in the 90s, and it shows.

Could be to do with sales. Sonic CD launched on the SEGA CD which is one of SEGA's worst failures as a console/peripheral.
Back in 1993, it's likely a lot of people didn't even know about the game, given how poorly SEGA's console had performed, and how only a fraction of the small amount of people owning a SEGA CD also owned Sonic CD.

SEGA changes Sonic all of the time. In fact, that's the problem, SEGA keeps reinventing the wheel instead of polishing existing formulas. There's been 5 different gameplay formuals for this series. 5. After 06 it seemed like they learned their lessen, they took a new gameplay formula and improved on it, and they achieve their biggest success since the 90s with Generations, and what do they do? They throw it all away and go back to square one. It's not that Sonic's become irrelevant, it's that he's been mismanaged.
Oh Sonic doesn't win any awards because his games are not exactly award material. Many are fun, but none are too pretty, technologically innovative or have stories to call home about.
Maybe only the first few, but I don't know of there even were gaming awards back then.
Even then, you have him as a pop culture icon and he even has his own molecule or something like that. Not sure what else he needs to be considered an important character. A royal title?
I used to be a huge Sonic fan. And I mean HUGE. I literally only played Sonic games for at least half of my life as a kid. Eventually I just grew out of it I guess, and none of his games since Unleashed have really clicked with me.
Check out my YouTube channel if you love gaming, and Nintendo (especially Metroid) I think you'll enjoy my videos. :)

Never liked Sonic. I hated the physics in the original games. I liked the cartoon when I was a kid, though.
But someone said it best - "History is written by the winner." And now, it's kind of fun and popular to hate on Sonic. Each new game that comes out is already doomed to preemptive hate because of the last few releases. They've dug a monstrous hole.
