Yeah, it's definitely a Day of the Dead theme. The skull painting on the side of a building is a clear sign. It's fitting since we're close to that time of year!

A 3D Mario with different worlds being inspired by different countries/cultures such as Japan, United States, Mexico, etc. is kind of a 3D version of Super Mario's Wacky Worlds. Though, it could just be a desert level inspired by Mexico/Day of the Dead.

I played Galaxy 2 today and I was just staring at the mission select screen. Listening to the music. And then I thought, "Man, I never realized how much I miss a truly open-world Mario game, complete with searching for stars/sprites." I love 3D World to death, but I'll go beyond that if this game is in fact a return to form.
I'm so hyped.

@TheLegendOfLaser To some degree Super Mario Land (on the GB) had that kind of settings - there was one inspired by Egypt, another one being Japan and Easter Islands. Most Mario games have themes, but this one had some really strong design elements. It would be great to see stuff like that with enemies and hazards being specific to a "world".

I like how Mario spreads his arms out like a bird while he's running. The only time I've ever seen him do that in a 3D Mario is if he only had a Power Star and Rainbow Star.

@adamkop I agree, it would make the worlds feel even more different and immersive.

Gamexplain is theorizing in their analysis video that the two clips of the game could very well be from the same level. If that's true, this game just got a LOT more interesting, that implies either the levels are humongous or the game is open world.

@Bolt_Strike the most interesting thing from that video (if the game shown is real) os the light that shoots up to the sky. What if instead of jumping into a world and selecting a mission to get a star for, what if instead there are several lights shooting up to the sky. You can choose which one to go for freely. You could see a light in the sky and head that way but the path winds around and takes you to a different stat, making the original one you went for harder to get and requiring you to re-enter the world... that could be cool

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

This could be a Sunshine sequel! I didn't see Fludd, but I am pretty sure I saw a Pianta to the right!

Update: Watching the Gamexplain video, that's not a Pianta. It's a Mexican-style creature. The creature looks a bit like Mumbo Jumbo. Also, those rings could work like in Sonic games. Maybe this is a faster Mario?

@Henmii Those rings are from 3D World. Forgot what they did, I think they just gave you coins.

Henmii

Yeah, but here they are placed in a strange position. So maybe you could go through them, Sonic style.

Mario 3D land and 3D world where nice games, but its cool to see them go back to free-roaming. Assuming that's the case, its a bit to early to tell.

I wish Nintendo would make another Mario game without Bowser or Mushroom Kingdom, but set in Subcon with Wart, Mouser and Fryguy.

I'm thinking you either use a powerup to reach those rings, or that enemy seen surfacing in the background.

Or it could be like Sunshine where you can see the other levels from your level and the hub world.

I'm pretty convinced the day of the dead themed level is part of a hub world.

Looks too specifically themed to be a hub world. Looks more like an actual level.

My theory is that the hub will have differently culturally themed zones. They might even unlock as you play the game like in Galaxy.

@iKhan I've heard that idea before, but the desert part just looks too big. I have difficulty imagining other zones connecting to it.
