Topic: What are some of the hardest RPG's ever made?

I would like to know what are some of the hardest RPG games made that require some form of skill. I ask this because a friend of mine doesn't think RPG's require skill. That and because maybe I could manage to get a hold of them someday. I just need to know some hard rpg's it doesn't what form of it it is.

8 bit era RPG's are tough, Phantasy Star 1 just navigating the dungeons is a challenge.

I'll try to help but level grinding doesn't take any skill and that's all you need to do when an RPG gets tough.

Baten Kaitos is really hard mostly because winning battles has more to do with luck of the draw and not so much strategy.
Baldur's Gate 2 is pretty hard since most enemies don't respawn, making it near impossible to level grind if you want to.
Xenosaga is a rough game too. I seem to recall not being able to backtrack or buy healing items. That kills the level grinding.

The SaGa games can be pretty difficult.

Fallout 3, Odin Sphere, Secret of Mana, Star Ocean: The Last Hope, Tales of Phantasia, and many other complex Action-RPGs. Those ones I mentioned especially aren't easy to just grind your way out of any situation, since even surviving and doing well in average combat require tactical prowess and sharp reflexes and timing.

With that said, Turn-based games, and action-RPGs in lew of Diablo don't require skill at all, instead relying on strategy, both in and out of battle. It's about mastering the complexities and ensuring that you'll enter every battle prepared, and leave every battle in good enough shape to be able to challenge and defeat the boss.

Demons' Souls definately requires skill, testing you in many different ways. Strategy certainly helps but If you don't have the skill it's impossible to cheat your way through it. It's really a lot of fun, cos it always feels like a fair test, the way games should be.

Secret of Mana is not tough though. You can spam magic on just about every boss or common enemy.

Shut yo mouth, foo. I died plenty of times in Secret of Mana, with or without magic, and I know others who have, too. The ordinary enemies alone can kill you pretty fast.

i've finished Summon Night 2 on GBA with no problems (great game btw)

Right...I think I only mentioned that one because it's very easy to get knocked down by your enemies if you don't know what you're doing, but otherwise it's rediculously easy, and I've never died. Ever. Not even in the first game did I die. And of course, you can still grind and improve your weapons until you kill everything with one hit. Still a fun game, but it only requires skill if you want battles to end quickly without grinding.

Really? That? Hard? I played it and the only difficult part is when you start the game knowing nothing. But when you know how it works, everything is nearlly a walk.

It still requires skill, and I suck at FPSes. I have a higher death count in that game than any other RPG, and I'm not very far in. Despite the title, all he's asking for are games that require skill, because his friend says RPGs don't require skill.

I have it on the VC, and it's pretty hard. Playing II/IV is such a relief...

Try RPG Maker. You can make your RPG as easy or as difficult as you want. ;D

Off-topic, but do you use RPG Maker? I'm looking to collaborate on a project with someone, and create something special!

On-topic. Wizardry (The Dark Spire), Demon's Souls. King's Field. These games are cruel, and "grinding" is rarely a solution that works.

Really? I always just spammed Edgar's chainsaw, that took away some of the difficulty. But the original FFIII in Japan is a different story...

The second half of Ys Book I & II (beaten), Breath of Fire: The Dragon Warrior (beaten) and Final Fantasy VI Advance [GBA] (unbeaten; SPOILER the farthest I've ever gotten in that game was inside Cyan's dream, but because I was illprepared I couldn't progress anymore and I was forced to start the game over END SPOILER).
