Topic: Sony Hack and What it Means for the Company

We all know Sony has been bleeding money. So what does this whole Sony hack mean for the company? As more information is leaked, Sony goes deeper into hot water. Is the hack enough to force them into bankruptcy?

No. They are getting closer to it, but for different reasons

I don't think so. If they do lose 0.5 billion due to this.

Their stake in the Beatles back catalog I think was worth about that. (Shared with Michael Jacksons estate).

It is just not going to happen. (As much as I would prefer a world without them and a new Sega console. Sony winning was the bad future).

Yes. That hack is a very serious situation. The information that's been revealed is resulting in multi-million dollar lawsuits and a lack of trust from celebrities, which will affect the future of Sony Pictures if nobody is willing to work with them. To make matters worse, leaked emails show that a Sony producer was somewhat against the idea of hiring Denzel Washington because he is black, while Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Adams made a lot less than their male costars over American Hustle, both of which will surely piss off civil rights activists. Not to mention the fact that Amazing Spiderman 2 made less than $100 million, which is barely anything for a major corporation.

Not bankruptcy but they are definitely getting close.

Ironically, their gaming division is one of the few which is making some money for them. They recently sold their laptop division, bled money on the mobile and television business.

This hack has seriously put them in hotter waters than before.

Plus if it is true about Amazing Spiderman 2, I don't see why they just don't sell back the rights of Spiderman to Marvel/Disney.

They have too many assets of serious value for them to be close to bankruptcy they are in a total mess but just the value of the back catalog for Sony Pictures would be astronomical.

(No excused for the complete disregard for information security though especially after the PSN thing).

Maybe it is Karma for the Geohot thing.

This is more a discussion on the Sony hack. Leave the petty fanboy wars at the door.

Considering the hack pretty much screwed them over in every direction, it may have some plausibility

Maybe I haven't been paying close enough attention to the details of the informations that was made public, but from what I could gather there was really barely anything meaningful or important among it. Mostly the whole thing strikes me a serious embarrassment for Sony Pictures, similar to the PSN hack.
What's interesting to me, is that apparently Sony Pictures itself is handlung the whole affair, and Sony itself remains rather opaque about the whole thing. Anyways, the problematic aspect, aside from another instance where Sony (a tech company after all, more on the engineering/electronic side but anyways) was not up to snuff in terms of cyber security, is the fact that they decided to to pull the movie - thus censoring themselves. That is what strikes me as the real take-way here. I can't say what short- to longterm implications this decision may have, but I doubt "Sony is doomed".
Actually I think it might put a spotlight on Sony's internal contradictions, how their partly U.S. based entertainment divisions are doing mostly good business and their core Japanese electronic business is doing mostly bad business. Like I said, I have no clue what's going to come off it eventually but still, bankruptcy seems extremely unlikely a result at this point.

What does it mean for Sony? Potentially amazing advertisement.

The movie will get eventually released. If it goes to bluray or movie theaters it will be much more successful than it would had been before. People who normally wouldn't have bothered watching it will watch it just because of the controversy. This has may have sent Sony back a few dollars in the short term but long term it will be a tremendous cash cow for them.

They are gonna survive but its gonna take a long time ( and a lot of money) to recover back to pre-hack status. For one they have 4 class action lawsuits (maybe more) to deal with. Also compensation to the people who got their personal information put out on the internet. And loss of trust by actors and directors. And important internal information that is meant to be private corporate business now out in the open for competitors to look at. And so much damage control. Even "The Interview" succeding won't help them recover quickly enough.

Well this is escalating. The hack apparently will cost Sony half a billion dollars. Sony has also said that they do plan on distributing The Interview eventually, while theater chains are pissed off at Sony for blaming them for the movie's initial cancellation. On a larger scale, North Korea warns of strikes against the US if Obama "keeps recklessly spreading rumors about them being behind the hack".

So apparently we may (God forbid) soon be able to say that WWIII started over a Seth Rogen comedy....

Apparently Sony will release The Interview for free on Crackle. Sony also has picked up its 5th class action lawsuit over failure to secure personal information. The leaked information showed that Sony was keeping passwords to important internal accounts in a file named "passwords"....
