Last thread was sensationalist, but this is not "fake" as described in the reason for closing it.

There are many news outlets reporting on this:

These are just grabbed off the first page of Google search results. I'm sure there's may more.

Here is the email sent to YouTube content creators:

For years, YouTube’s fans have been telling us they want more — more choice when watching their favorite content, more ways to support their favorite creators and, above all, the option to watch their favorite videos uninterrupted.

To give fans more choice we will be launching a new ads-free version of YouTube, available to fans for a monthly fee. This service will create a new source of revenue over time that supplements your advertising revenue. That’s why an overwhelming majority of our partners — representing over 95% of YouTube watchtime — have asked for and signed up for this service.

As you heard in our previous emails, we want to ensure that fans who choose to pay for an ads-free experience can watch all the same videos that are available on the ads-supported experience. That’s why we’re asking you to update your agreement to reflect the updated terms for the ads-free service.

To accept, simply log into YouTube.com as “pakafka” from a desktop or laptop and follow the prompts by October 22nd.

If you haven’t signed by that date, your videos will no longer be available for public display or monetization in the United States. That outcome would be a loss for YouTube, a loss for the thriving presence you’ve built on the platform, and above all, a loss for your fans. We remain committed to working with you, as we always have. And of course, at any time, you can accept the updated terms which will make your videos public and monetizable again. Common FAQs can be found here.

We believe these new terms will greatly strengthen our partnership for the future. We went through a similar process three years ago when we began distributing and monetizing your content on mobile devices. Today, mobile represents over half of all watchtime and mobile revenue is up 2x in just the last year. Just as with mobile, we’re confident this latest update will excite your fans and generate a previously untapped, additional source of revenue for you.

If you have questions or encounter technical difficulties, we’re here to help: reach out to us for support here.

The YouTube Team

So TL;DR, YouTube is expanding (not changing) its service to give users the option to subscribe for ad-free service with offline storage capabilities. Content creators also have the option to put their videos behind the subscription. This will entitle them to a share of the subscription revenue. This is not required though. Content creators only need to agree to the new terms before October 22 or their videos will be marked as private.

What this means:

  • More viewing options for viewers
  • More revenue options for content creators

What this doesn't mean:

  • Google is making you pay for YouTube

Doesn't surprise me Hulu just started offering a commercial free sub as well.

I hope this filters out the Youtube celebrities for me.

Hugely popular YouTube personalities like PewDiePie are probably the only ones that would actually benefit from going subscription only. People go to YouTube for free videos and I don't think a lot of people are actually going to be willing to get on board with $10/mo sub unless Google is hiding some stellar features up its sleeve. Any content creators that choose to paywall their videos are going to take a huge hit to viewership and thus ad revenue, so viewership is going to have to be massive to begin with to offset lost ad revenue with subscription revenue.

It seems though. that a massive number of videos are going to just vanish on the 22nd. Many many people who uploaded videos to YouTube will never bother to log in again, rendering their videos inaccessible

Yeah, that's what it sounded like to me, too. I really hope not! I'd better start downloading a ton of my favorite YouTube videos just in case. Hopefully though, if it does become a problem, YouTube will bring back videos with uploaders who have been inactive for a certain period of time or something.

Also I have Adblock, so there's absolutely no reason I would pay for this.

Didn't think about that, but yeah, that would be a serious problem.

So, if I understand this subscription service, not only do I have to pay to watch ad-free videos, the only ad-free videos I can watch are of the creators who are subscribed to the programme as well, is that correct?

So what does this mean for those youtubers against Nintendo? They can now make revenue out of the Nintendo content instead of them being turned down? Or it still means nothing to those who despise Nintendo?

After so long...I'm back. Don't ask why

Why pay when you can adblock?

If you add me, I need to at least know you or I won't add you back.
