You must play Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey. Right now you can find it at your local gamestop for 14.99. i haven't seen it more expensive than 18.99 to be honest. It's my favorite game on the system by the way.

Other than that I can say Radiant Historia, even though Strange Journey is my favorite game, I find Radiant Historia to be the best RPG on the system. And the best one since the PS2 era.

But take that as a grain of salt that's just my opinion.

Define "cheap". Less than $30? Less than $20?

At Amazon, Dragon Quest VI, Dragon Quest IX, Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light and Golden Sun: Dark Dawn are all notable RPGs around $15 (I've only played DQIX from that group, but that one game can last you a long time), Final Fantasy IV is $20, Dragon Quest V is about $25, and Radiant Historia and Chrono Trigger are $30 each (I whole-heartedly recommend any of those last four).

He said "cheap to buy". I'd recommend those above any other game, too, if they were actually readily available for under $40 at anywhere besides the 5 or so gamestops in the entire country that still have them in stock.

I wouldn't call a DS game cheap until it drops below $20.

I've been playing a very inexpensive RPG called Magical Starsign. Some gamers seem to have a keen dislike for this game. I'm not exactly sure why. Maybe it's due to the random encounters and turn based combat--but those are kind of drawbacks to almost every RPG. It's made by Brownie Brown, those guys responsible for Secret of Mana. I think that Mana style really shows up in the monsters and characters of this game. The things they say can be pretty funny and the bestiary has some amusing descriptions. Outside of combat each character has an elemental magic they can use to solve little environmental puzzles. I haven't beaten it yet, so I can't say how long it is, but I'm enjoying it so far.

I bought Strange Journey for 14.99 with a box on gamestop like a year ago true, but on amazon you can get it used for around 15 too. I know Radiant Historia ain't cheap but that game will never be cheaper than $30 and it's the best rpg of the system. I'm just recommending games he probably hasn't heard of yet. Cause I know he knows Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, Pokemon and Bowser's Inside Story....everybody does! 80% of DS RPG recommendations will be those titles. Although great games, if you're a fan of the genre you already have knowledge of their existence.

That's like somebody recommending a puzzle fan Tetris.

Whoa, I looked a month or two ago and Strange Journey was really expensive. That's easily the best RPG on the DS. Get it!

Has anyone played Tales of Hearts? I've heard some good things about it, but there isn't a lot of information (in English, anyway) about it that I've found.

I'll probably end up ordering it, but I'd be interested to hear opinions of anyone who has played it.

I used to have a blog link here. I'll put it back up when the blog has something to read.

I've heard nought but good things about it, but I highly doubt it'll be good for non-English players unless you know a lot of Japanese...or you have a guide.

I've heard a lot of praise for it, most say its the best DS Tales of game and I've even seen quite a few people who have played most of the mothership titles (in the Tales of series, main series games are called mothership titles and the rest are called escort titles) ranking ToH very highly and often putting it in their top 5. A fan translation is being made so I suggest you wait for that. They have been working on the project for quite a while now and it seems like it could still take a while to be finished. BTW, the progress bar isn't an indication of how far along the project is.

It seems as though not that many people have actually played it, but I think I will go ahead and get it. I keep telling myself that I'll learn Japanese one day (at least enough to get by in video games) so I'll probably keep it on the backburner until I either learn a little bit or just give up :P

Though the more Japanese games I buy (so far I've got Soma Bringer, Ni No Kuni, Ouendan 1+2, Game Center CX 2, Super Robot Taisen L & Tingle's Balloon Fight) the more I feel an incentive to make some progress with learning it.

Does Radiant Historia get better as the game goes on, because I've played about the first 6 hours and I'm finding it quite... boring.

It gets better with time. I also found it boring at first.

Anyone here have Magical Starsign? It's $3 used and $15 new at my Gamestop and I was wondering if it was any good.

EDIT: Whoops, somebody on this page already said something about it. :P

That person doesn't get why the game doesn't work yet. I assume at least, I liked the game at first too.

Now, granted I haven't played the game since I beat it shortly after it came out. But from what I remember, the game's problem is pretty much that it never builds or gets better. It starts at ok and stays there, at best, and just ends up dissappointing. The characters aren't remotely compelling, nor is the story for the most part, even by JRPG standards. The music is meh, the battles get old even for turn based RPGs (lamest use of touch screen doesn't help), The only thing all that great is the robot character. He was a lot of fun. And no Brownie Brown didn't make Secret of Mana. They made Sword of Mana....I think...

Really the game just ends up as kind of a bore and there are so many better JRPGs to get on the DS, most notably TWEWY and Radiant Historia. Even Contact, with it's horrible midgame nightmare grinding, I'd recommend for at least having some great ideas and parts that are pretty awesome.

Yeah I heard TWEWY was good, I guess so good that nobody wants to trade it in. When it was new it eluded my interest somehow.

Maybe I'll look into Radiant Historia, though. Honestly the only reason I was interested in Magical Starsign at all is because it was $3. XD Thanks for the information though. The most disappointing thing to me would be the music being sub par, since that's what usually makes the RPG experience whole for me.

yeah, like...when I am complaining about the music in video games, that's really not a good sign. I mean I like the music in Glover, Charmeleon Twist, Super Monkey Ball 1, and a Spongebob Squarepants game. I don't exactly have high standards.

does anybody recommend pokemon conquest? I like fire emblem GBA that I got as an ambassador but not really sure I will like Pokemon Conquest, hence why I haven't bought it yet even though I am a big fan of Pokemon. I just want to know if it's easy to pick up and learn how to play it.

Edited on Mon 6th August, 2012 @ 22:24 by mumof3kids82

looking forward to Mario Golf 3D, Mario & Luigi Dream Team, Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Shin Megami Tensei Devil Summoner Soul Hackers, Project X Zone and Pokemon X & Y.

Yes I recommend it. It is a tactical RPG similar to Fire Emblem, but more similar to the Final Fantasy Tactics series (the DS one Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced 2 Grimoire of the Rift is recommended.) It is fun though and has lots of replayability after the main story. I've put about 30 hours into the game so far :O
Also I recommend TWEWY to all! :* :* :* :* :* :*

Anybody got recommendations for someone who was (is) totally engrossed in Rune Factory but loathed Harvest Moon?

Also, what's Disgaea like? I like strategy games but from what I've heard it's ridiculously grind intensive and complex. I've been torn between that and Pokemon Conquest but at this point it sounds like PC might be the way to go... even though Disgaea appeals to me for its writing and art style.
