My guess is that it's this:

I don't think it's ever been seen. I think there's a special on the History Channel tonight about the mystery of the NSMB2 game over screen, I have it set to record.

I've got the body of a taut, pre-teen Swedish boy.

dont bother... the OP just wanted to imply that he never saw that screen because he is such an awesome gamer and can finish the game in 30 minutes whilst blindfolded and with one hand tied behind his back.

Sorry man, but this isn't a challenging game. The poster right above you had to start up a new profile and intentionally get a game over to figure out what it looked like.

It raises interesting questions about the definition of "challenging," though. (I thought Kirby's Epic Yarn did too, personally.)

If challenge equates to losing all of your lives and getting some kind of punishment, then nah, this isn't challenging...

...and yet I'm tearing my hair out trying to get all the star coins and exits, so obviously it is a challenging game in some regard.

I think it's important to remember that challenge does not always equal relentless death and dying. There are other, more interesting, ways to implement challenge.

Anyone can fill a screen with spikes and fire and tiny platforms with pixel perfect jumping required. That's not impressive level design, even if it is challenging. It's more interesting to me if you craft a vast and expansive game world that relies on exploration and ingenuity to find what you're looking for. Hide it well — but not unfairly — and you've got challenge.

@Philip_J_Reed But there are other games with great level design that are also challenging. Just look at VVVVVV, Super Meat Boy, NES Mega Man games, and the treasure levels in Rayman Origins.
Is this game as hard as Super Mario Bros. 3 from a level design perspective?

No, not at all. I haven´t played Super Mario Bros 3 for a while but I still remember being the hardest 2D-Mario after Lost Levels.

It would be great if David Wise made soundtracks to all future Nintendo games.

tbh, save files are just another way of making games easier too.
if you do get a game over all you need to do is restart the game from the last save point.

Well, sure. But to say "there are other games more challenging than this" doesn't mean that this game isn't challenging. There will always be harder games; that's beside the point. The question is whether or not this game offers challenge, and my hours of searching out secret exits without necessarily finding them, and dying multiple times trying to grab a star coin and get back out alive, says that to me it does.
