I'm using a Nintendo approved stylus with my Nintendo 3DS and the touch screen is getting some scratches on it. I've heard that it's caused by pushing down to hard with the stylus but I know I'm not because when my (little) sister gets mad with a game that uses the touch screen (Mainly Freakyforms) she'll HIT the touch screen with her stylus and her's is in better shape than mine +this is my first portable so I've been treating it VERY carefully. I was wondering if I should get it repaired and I wondered how long it would take because all they need to do is fix the scratches unlike all the people who destroyed the thing and sent it in and it takes 3 weeks. And after I get it repaired I was wondering what stylus I should swap to to avoid the scratching. I was looking at: http://www.gamestop.com/nintendo-3ds/accessories/3ds-microsue... because I've used those styluses (My brother had them but my sister broke them.) and they were very nice and have a different tip from the normal 3DS stylus kind.
My SD Card with the game on it is just as physical as your cartridge with the game on it.
I love Nintendo, that's why I criticize them so harshly.
Ough, i faced this exact problem. The first time, it was with the original stylus that came with the 3DS, started making minute scratches out of nowhere. Although i did have a screen protector, it got annoying to play outside and also being able to feel the rough-ness of the small scratches >.< .. replaced the stylus with another same one ordered on nintendo store, i dropped that one, and the tip got messed up.. i just gave up and bought a beautiful rubber tipped stylus (Targus) from Target and im loving it .. excuse the long anecdote >.<
You may have a tiny bit of dirt on the screen that you didn't know was there and the stylus is scratching that over the screen. Get good screen protectors. I recommend the ones made by Hori.

^ yeah as Victoria said, this was my exact problem too, tiny dust particles and sometimes small pieces of hair or eyebrows/eyelashes would get stuck on the touch screen and when I use the stylus I would get small scratches but they were annoying to feel on my carefully looked after system, I got a screen protector and it's all good now.
I used another stylus for a while which was also Nintendo approved and that scratched mine like crazy. I then used the one that came with the 3DS originally and left hardly a smudge... kinda weird if you ask me.
Ok, thanks for all the tips on styluses! Does anyone know if the people at Nintendo's Repair Center will actually repair it or just send me a new 3DS? I've heard it's more likely they'll just send you a new 3DS instead of fixing the screen. A new screen sounds like it would be less expensive to produce than a whole new 3DS, so can anyone confirm that they'll send me a new one or not? (I'm hoping they don't so I can keep my games and progress in them [my friend got a new one and lost all his games, but they gave him eShop credit to re-buy them])

You have to take in account having to pay someone to take apart your 3DS swap out the screen and than put your 3DS back together again. So the parts and labor are probably a bit more than what did they say before, $50 to produce a new 3DS.

A question about the repair approach: If they were to send a new 3DS back instead of replacing the screen, would it keep all the download data? Such as games and whatnot.

They'd use system transfer I'm sure, but you'd lose all your save data as far as I know. And does anyone know if Nintendo will charge me for this? I've used approved styluses and THEY scratched my screen so it's technically Nintendo's fault, right?
