How cheap can Nintendo get? I bought the physical copy of this and there is no instruction booklet, the plastic case has big holes in it, and now the club Nintendo code is located on the book of the actual cover art? Didn't Nintendo used to be known for their quality????
The instruction manual is digital that can be accessed through the Wii U, the plastic has holes to be more enivronmentally friendly, same with the Club Nintendo code.
And the cases have always been like that. They started putting the CN codes on the slip covers since Hyrule Warriors came out.
Formally called brewsky before becoming the lovable, adorable Yoshi.
Now playing:
Final Fantasy XIV (PC) | The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (Switch) | Celeste (Switch)
They've been doing CN codes on the back of he cover since Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright. The holes in the box have been around since at least the latter half of the Wii era, and manuals are now digital for most games.

It has nothing to do with quality at all. It is more environmentally friendly and cost friendly
It has to do with quality because now the cover art gets beat up. These types of cases aren't environmentally friendly because with dvd's and blu rays, many people buy quality replacement cases and throw these junk eco cases in the garbage. Costs to the consumer certainly have not lowered.
I don't buy as much into the environmental thing as some make out here. What's next, the game card thrown in a recycled paper bag in the name of the environment? Also, the weird logic of 'money saved returned to development' is laughable as well, going by that assumption they might as well cut 1/8 of the game and invest that saved money into another game. All perfect right?!
This is about cost reduction and nothing else, and 'we' are the only ones paying for it, ending up with less value then we used to get.

There is still quality in the digital manuals. For example: The Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker manual is amuzing in itself when they poke fun at the limitations of toad.
In the case of Mario Kart 8 the manual was updated to show the new features including a section on amiibos. If it were printed the printed manual would be obsolete. Screen captures may become hard to follow as menu changes overtime may confuse people.
Personally I haven't used a manual in a long time. I was just surprised Smash had a manual with a break down of move sets for the starting lineup.

Oh right, like how hybrids aren't friendly and cost-friendly because I decide to replace the engine with a gas-guzzling one. Good logic there!

The truth is that they are selling you a cheaper product for the same price or more to make more money.
If they cared about the environment they would have replaced the manual or the case with eco-friendly alternatives (there's a ton). They can't care less about the environment - they only care about your money.
So much that they are releasing those ugly plastic cases wrapped in a shiny piece of hard to recycle cellophane with nothing in it - just a download code. That's a big **** off to the environment I must say.
We're still paying for the manual despite not getting it. Still paying for a full jewel case despite getting only half of it. The people who are buying digital only are still paying for distribution, transportation, storage of goods and retail despite the game being delivered directly to them from the source.
In conclusion, they think we are pretty stupid because we're paying more for getting less and everybody is still jolly about it.
Top-10 games I played in 2017: The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild (WiiU) - Rogue Legacy (PS3) - Fallout 3 (PS3) - Red Dead Redemption (PS3) - Guns of Boom (MP) - Sky Force Reloaded (MP) - ...

I think people put to much value in their cases and manuals over the game itself.
Don't see how 'too' is applicable here, people appreciate different things. Just as with books there's people that just read them and there's also people they like to collect them as well as reading them. The latter group of people appreciate a book cover more or any art about it.

I am sad to see printed manuals go away. That was part of the great value in Nintendo games from not-that-long ago. Nintendo games don't drop in price as fast as from other publishers. I am more comfortable paying more if the game has a great manual (which truly seems the time has past). The couple above posters are right. There is ONE reason these aren't done any longer: saving the mfgrs money. I suppose you could argue that game prices haven't moved as fast as inflation, and therefore it's more fair for the mfgr to trim some corners. But ultimately, it's about distributors and Walmart paying less money for gas to ship the product.
